The Laser Strap helps to train a short stride as the hitter is forced to let the baseball get deep into the hitting zone before starting his forward swing path to the baseball. A hitter doesn’t need to have a big high leg kick to generate power, there’s a strong correlation to a high leg kick and a low batting average. All the hitter needs is a small inward turn of the front knee, as the front foot gently picks up and puts down.
My biggest weakness as a hitter was keeping my weight from drifting to my front side. This was a result of my weight transfer during my load. During my load, my weight transfer was too much weight from my back side that made my weight transfer too much to my front side. I found out later in my career from ex-big leaguer Frank Menechino, that the weight transfer should start in a 50-50 balance stance to a slow abbreviated weight transfer load back to 60-40 and the weight transfer returns back to 50-50 as the hitter approaches the hitting zone.
When hitters think about using their legs in hitting usually the thought is to drive hard toward the pitcher & gain ground then rotate the hips. One of the main things you see some of the best hitters doing now is landing with an open bottom half and a closed top half. I started to work this into my own swing a couple years ago and it was created a jump off the ball I never felt. By landing closed, a hitter will not be able to get everything out of their swing. When your front side opens going into the launch position, but your torso remains square it creates a tension in the hips that causes upper body to rotate even quicker without even trying! In a sense the body becomes a rubber band that shoots after you pull it back. Quicker firing hips and quicker upper body rotation will lead to the obvious, more bat speed. By implementing these patterns into your swings and becoming comfortable with them you will create greater room for success.
