Every year Latin students from across Ohio gather in Columbus for a 3 day convention where they compete in a number of academic, graphic arts, and creative contests. The event is planned by a combination of state chairs (including our own Magistra Frodge!), club sponsors, and elected student officials under the national organization of the Junior Classical League.
On the state executive board, Casey deBlank proudly served as South Gubernator in charge of service, and Arpad Lalliement served as the state Historian.
Overall, our combined points placed us 3rd out of 22 schools from all over the state!

One tradition of Convention is the selection of a Latin quote to serve as the theme of the event. This year's theme was
"gutta cavat lapidem", meaning "a drop of water hollows out a rock."
Indian Hill's banner was designed and completed by Casey de Blank and Lottie Henz. It depicts a rose overcoming the harsh diversity of craig through nourishment. Our banner was awarded a Good ranking.

All schools attending this year were challenged to create a commercial advertising a product themed around the inventor Archimedes. Our High School students created a commercial for Rent-a-Genius, an overly intelligent romantic partner. Our Commercial was ranked Excellent.
For Music Video, we were tasked with to explain Superlatives. Joey O'Shaughnessy wrote and edited a parody of Taylor Swift's Shake It Off. The Indian Hill Middle School students starred in this video. Our Music Video was ranked Good.
On each day of convention, assemblies are kicked off with a Spirit Competition! Indian Hill students joined 22 schools from Ohio in filling the convention hall with screams and chants!

The total efforts received 1064 points! This is the highest ranking and point total the school has achieved since 2018.
If you see any of these students, be sure to congratulate them on receiving state recognition!

Cole Compton performed Frank Sinatra's My Way. Xavier Sharif (Grade 12) performed Modern Major General from Pirates of Penzance.
Latin Convention also features a talent show called OJCL's Got Talent. Students all over the state bring their singing, dancing, acting, and any other hidden talents to the stage as a variety show.
This year Indian Hill had 4 acts featured in OJCL's Got Talent. Cole Compton won 1st Place!
Roe Brodbeck (Grade 7) and Sophia Lei (Grade 8) performing a comedy routine.
Glenn Ernest (Grade 7) provided Security against Geese and Madeira Boys at the Talent Show!
Convention is also where students are elected to state office in the Junior Classical League. These students will not only be responsible for planning next years state convention, but they will also plan a number of events for students across Ohio as well as lead the state delegation at the National Latin Convention. Campaigning is a rigorous process involving developing a platform, delivering several speeches, and networking with other schools.
This year Indian Hill had two students serving on the board of executive officers. Arpad Lalliement (Grade 11) served as the State Historian and Casey deBlank (Grade 12) as the South Gubernator.
We are pleased to report back that Kaz On (Grade 9) has been elected as next year's First Vice President, and Arpad Lalliement will be the Ohio Junior Classical League President.
Latin Convention is just not for competition, but also for building community among our students! Whether it was playing categories in the hall, prepping for the toga banquet, or late night fellowship, our Latin club had fun getting to know each other and other Latin students from schools across the state.
