Week 7- Blood on the River TEST: Monday, 11/3
Peninsula is a noun that means a piece of land that is almost entirely surrounded by water or sticking out into the water.
Inclination is a noun that means a feeling of liking or of wanting to do something.
Provisions is the plural form of the word provision, which is a noun that means a supply of food or other things that are needed.
Pierce is a verb that can mean to go through.
Eavesdrop is a verb that means to listen secretly to what other people are saying.
Innocent is an adjective that means clean and pure, filled with goodness.
Week 8 - Blood on the River
Starvation- is a noun that means dying from hunger. To starve means to be without food for so long that it damages the health of a living being.
Negotiate- means to talk and make a deal. The other verb form is negotiated. Negotiation is the noun form.
Exhorting- is the verb form of exhort that means urging strongly. Exhorted would be the past tense of the word exhort.
Shirk- is a verb that means to avoid doing something that you are supposed to do.
Fury-is a noun that means intense rage or anger. When you are in a fury, you are very angry. Furious is the adjective form of the word and it is a way to describe feeling intensely angry. You could say you are in a fury, or feel furious, when something makes you extremely angry.
Confer- is a verb that means to discuss something important in order to make a decision.
Week 9 - Blood on the River
Smoldering is an adjective that means still burning, but not brightly. Smoldering anger is a noun that means anger that is still there, but not showing itself. When a fire has been burning in a fireplace for a long time and the coals are glowing and putting off heat, we can say that the fire is smoldering.
Enthusiastic is an adjective that means excited to participate. Enthusiasm is the noun form.
Idle is an adjective. It is a synonym for inactive, not busy, lazy. Synonyms are words with similar meanings. Antonyms are opposites. Productive is an antonym for idle.
Conjecture is a noun or a verb that means to make a prediction or a guess. We have been making conjectures as we have read this book together.
Vision is a word with multiple related meanings. Your vision is your ability to see. Another noun meaning is a mental image of the future, as in a dream.
Vengeful is an adjective that means feeling or showing a desire to harm someone who has harmed you. There are numerous related words: vengefully, vengefulness, avenge, and vengeance.
Week 10 - Blood on the River
Regal is an adjective that means a person looks and acts like a king or queen. When a monarch enters a room, he or she walks very proudly and confidently.
Vigil is a noun that means to watch over in a careful way. When someone is sick or in danger, we might keep a vigil over them.
Wealthy is a synonym for rich. It is an adjective. When you add the suffix “er” which means more, you have wealthier.
Rationing is a verb that means to take something that you have only a bit of and give it out in small portions to make it last.
Foreshadowing is a noun used to describe the author's craft. Sometimes an author will give us clues about what is coming next in the story.
Examine is a verb that means to look at very closely.

Authority- is a noun that means the right or power to give commands or make rules. The principal has the authority to enforce the school rules. You can see the root word author. An author is someone who has power to determine meaning.
Intricate- is an adjective that means having many parts. An intricate design would be very detailed.
Ruckus- is a noun that means a noisy argument.
Makeshift-is an adjective that describes something created as a temporary replacement. If you just moved to a new house, you could use a large box as a makeshift table

prophesy- is noun that means a prediction of something that will happen in the future.
pawnshop - is a noun that means a business where people can sell things when they need money.
gallows -is a noun that means is a tall wooden frame that has ropes tied to it; used as a severe punishment used in the past.
commoner - is a noun that means a common person.
discontent- is a noun that means not happy or not feeling good.
slothfulness- is a noun that means acting in a very slow, lazy way.

Shackled is a verb or adjective that means to have a ring or band on the arms and legs that prevents someone from moving them freely. In this case, Captain Smith is shackled with iron chains. Shackle and shackles are the noun forms. You might hear that prisoners are shackled when they go into court. Teacher Manual 154
Tallow is a noun that means the solid fat from cattle and sheep that is used to make soap, candles, and lubricants. In the time of this book, it was used to cook with and to heal sores on your skin, the way we might use lotion today.
Toiling is a verb that means working very hard. We are going to see that when the boats are docked in the islands, the servants must toil at different jobs. Toiled is the past tense form.
Demonstrate is a verb that means to show someone exactly how to do something. If we get a new student, I will ask someone to demonstrate our morning procedures. Demonstrated and demonstrating are the other verb forms. Demonstration is the noun.
Perish is a verb that means to die. You are going to see that Reverend Hunt believes that John Smith has the skills to help the colonists survive and not perish in Virginia. The other verb forms are perished, perishing.
Ignorant is an adjective that means lacking knowledge. If you visit another country, you will be ignorant of the culture and might make mistakes. The noun form is ignorance.
