To help organize our players and flow into our half court Motion offense, our program runs a role-defined fast break. Each player on the court is responsible to run their proper fast break lanes. Our transition offense can be separated into two phases: our primary break and our secondary break.
Bust-Out Man: Players designated in this role are able to push the ball off the dribble or pass ahead depending on the situation. In the diagram to the right, this role is represented by #1.
Rim Runner: Post player designated to run straight down the floor to the tip of the rim. In this diagram, #4 is the rim runner.
Trailer: Person trailing the play behind the ball, oftentimes the player who grabbed the defensive rebound. In the diagram to the right, this role is represented by #5.
Get-Out Man: Players who are responsible for sprinting down the floor wide outside of the “volleyball lines.” In the diagram to the right, this role is represented by #2 and #3.
If there is no defense set in front of them and they have a potential open lay-up opportunity, the get-out men can cut to the rim in transition.
If there is not an open lay-up opportunity, they should sprint to the corners and hold to space the floor.
Notes:
Everyone (except the rim runner) is a “get-out” guy if they don’t have the basketball.
Look to pitch the ball ahead - the best fast breaks don’t ever have the ball touch the ground.
If there are multiple get-out guys on the same side of the floor do not have them cut across the middle of the floor to balance the court. Instead, they should “cut the lane” once they reach the three point line. They could also engage in early offense (i.e. a down screen or Zoom Action).
Often, the rebounder will turn into a trailer and follow the break. They can engage in early offense, such as Delay or Pistol.
One of the best actions to complete in transition is to cross the street. This occurs when a ball handler advances the ball from one side of the floor to the other either with a pass or a drive.
If the primary break isn't open, we should flow into Motion or transition into our Pistol Series as secondary breaks.
