The primary basketball focus in our program is to teach our players how to play the game. A lot of coaches put in dozens of patterned offenses, set plays, and quick hitters, but oftentimes their players don’t truly understand how to play on the offensive end. As a result, they become basketball “robots,” running to spots and completing mapped out actions instead of making decisions based on reading the defense and reacting to their teammates.
To avoid having our players develop into “robots” and to maximize their growth as players, we will be running a hybrid of Motion, Pace and Space, Read and React, Delay, and Dribble Drive. The purpose of the offense is in the title. It teaches players how to read the defense and react to their teammates while staying in constant motion. Since our primary man-to-man offense is based on concepts rather than set actions, it may take a little longer for us to perfect it. This is ok, because once we’re able to understand it, not only will we be a better team but our players will be better prepared. Ultimately, our offense should be unscoutable.
Our offense is based on several key principles:
Run in transition.
Shot selection is key - work for a great shot every possession.
Maintain proper floor spacing.
Have purposeful, constant movement.
Be patient, share the ball, and involve your teammates.
Diversify your offensive actions and be unpredictable.
0.5 Second Rule: Pass, shoot, or drive within 0.5 seconds of receiving a pass. Don't let the ball "stick" unless we are in Delay Action.
Skill development and decision-making training are a staple of our program.
Push the ball in transition and don’t let the defense get set.
When you pass the ball, it should trigger another action or series of actions.
Maintain proper spacing at all times. Always fill the next open spot and don't get caught in between spots.
Don’t settle for “first side offense” unless we have a wide open scoring opportunity. Move the basketball side-top-side and get reversals.
Randomize your actions as much as possible and always communicate what you're doing on the floor.
Be aggressive within the framework of the offense.
It doesn't matter how you guard us. We should have a counter for every defensive coverage.
Allow time to read the defense and let the actions materialize. Race where you're going, but don't rush your decisions.
Know your personnel and play to each player's strengths
0.5 Second Rule: Pass, shoot, or drive within 0.5 seconds of receiving a pass
Our goal is to create dominoes and always play off an advantage. We don't want to hold the ball and allow the defense to go into "neutral." It's always important to maintain an advantage once it's created.
Force the defense to make long, quick closeouts to gain an advantage. Get them scrambling!
It's our shot, not my shot. Always work to find the best shot possible for our team.
