Outline for the Development of a Scholarship Application
1. Complete a scholarship application from the the Iowa Falls-Alden School District and print copies for each scholarship application packet: www.ifacadets.net
2. Complete every scholarship application carefully and completely. For the information on activities and explanation of why you are applying for this scholarship.
3. Develop an activities list and address the following: School activities, church activities, volunteer service/community service activities, outside school projects, and employment. Place this list in every application packet.
4. Develop a one page essay on why you are a deserving applicant for this scholarship; your plans for college, the major you will be pursuing, some of your qualities and personal attributes that will help you attain your college goals, and the need for financial assistance.
5. Assure that every scholarship is completed timely. No last minute approach. Aim for completion the week prior to the due date.
6. Request three teachers to write references at least a month prior to the date needed. Request both in writing and personally. Make sure to give your activities list to the teacher so they can get a good idea of the kind of person you are, and it makes the job easier for them. Always give the teacher a thank you note when the reference is received.
Note: If you are applying for a church related scholarship request a reference from the youth group leader or confirmation assistant or someone who knows your activities related to your church.
7. Please do not state “I will never get this scholarship so why complete an application!” Remember you will never receive a scholarship unless you make the effort and time to complete the scholarship application/packet to the best of your abilities.
8. First impressions by the individual/business giving the scholarship will be your scholarship application/packet. MAKE IT THE BEST!
