Creating Eco-Friendly Citizens

Project presentation

Our schools will have chance to do international activities, our teachers will proud as they grow sensible and creative generations on ecology and science. They will have chance to observe different teaching methods in different countries and share their opinions with their collegues. The joint international work will enable teachers to understand one another's educational systems, to adopt well tried methods in order to increase efficiency and fairness of education in childhood, experience other cultures and get to know one another as individuals rather than national stereotypes. This will equip them to challenge racism and xenophobia.

It is greater challenge for us to use Web.2.0 tools internationally than what we normally do in ICT classrooms. The schools which are experienced in ICT will inspire other partners to use them more efficiently. With the projecta friendly relationships will be set up among students by exchanging e-mails, letters or cards. It will develop tolerance, positive attitude, respect towards other religions, cultures, history, customs and art.

In that context teachers have taken part in workshops on a regular basis and are constantly looking for ways to improve sustainability in many areas of school life. One recent success has been the reduction of waste in the school canteen by using reusable containers and less plastic. Our “one world” team of students sells fair trade products once a week and encourages everyone to think about where our products come from and who produces them. However, we are just beginning to make our school fully sustainable and there is still a lot to be done.

IES Andreu Alfaro

Paiporta

Our school offers compulsory education levels (ESO) ages from 12 to 16, and A-level studies (Bachillerato) for students from 16 to 18. Our school was established in 2010. We have magnificent facilities to suit a wide range of educational activities, and it is technologically full equipped in order to achieve an advanced usage of I C T in learning and teaching.

We have got 900 students and 90 teachers. Our students’ family cultural and socio-economic level is medium, with a very low percentage of foreign students, mostly from a Moroccan, Spanish American, Chinese and East European origin.

Our school is located in Paiporta, a peripheral town close to Valencia big city. It is surrounded by orchards with a still in use irrigation system which dates back to the Arab domination times, and which is endangered by the big city urbanisation pressure. Nowadays, Paiporta farmers are still using «acequias», an irrigation system created and developed by the Arabs in the Middle Ages, as well as their ancient irrigation organising and controlling system, «Tribunal de las aguas».

Ours is a cropping system which provides our population with an ecological, sustainable and proximity- trade food production. It is also endangered because it is not being continued by the new generations. Our students have an easy reach to the orchards crops, as for many of them farming is a family job. It is a natural and cultural benefit we are to look after and we need and want our students to understand its importance.

Our school is ready to enroll in any projects regarding our surroundings and environment care. Paiporta is located close to a ravine, which is a natural spot itself. There is a local non-profit organization devoted to its preservation.

Our Science and Technology departments take part in several sheared programs and our students attend several lecturesOur management team, as well as our Science and Technology, History and Geography and Foreign Languages departments are ready to participate in international educational projects.
