That’s MEGA! MEGA is not only the title of our current Erasmus+ program but also the best possible adjective for describing our club. Since LMRL’s last MUN in November 2019 and the opening of the new Erasmus+ project, our club has been very well received. The interest and participation in our project have risen significantly. As our mission is to make the environment great again, we started in 2019 to work on different programs emphasizing the importance of sustainability, climate protection and politics until Covid-19 propagated all around the globe. Luxembourg went into strict lockdown from March to May, which meant homeschooling for Luxemburg students. Even after the ease of the lockdown, we would physically visit the school every other week, which meant no MEGA too.
After almost a year, we could meet again in September of 2020. Since then, our students have started to work on their numerous projects again on which I’m going to elaborate on now.
Starting with a project called “Coffee Culture” coming from two very motivated and engaged members, Zoé Clees and Charlotte Prum. “Coffee Culture” is about banning plastic cups in our schools coffee distributors and exchanging them with sustainable reusable cups, which are planned to be available in our secretariat. Zoé and Charlotte are currently working on a survey for our school community to learn their opinion on their idea.
Next, we have a project by another member of our MEGA, Daniel Gomes. His project called “For a more sustainable future”, is an educational program presenting the current climate crisis to LMRL’s seventh graders. The idea behind this is that our educational system does not put enough effort into educating young students about important political issues. Daniel hosts also another project focussing on building so-called insect hotels. Those “hotels” are meant to represent a safe place for insects to build their nests on our school campus.
Finally, our two presidents Loulou Nilles and Laura Marx are working on a project called “Meatless Monday”. This project is an awareness and sustainability program emphasizing the importance of cutting meat consumption down. This program is planned to be a collaboration with the Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Sustainable Development and to be introduced next school year.
Besides our projects, we organize debates and discussions about ongoing topics to give our members the possibility to work on their English and argumentation skills but also their self-confidence. The latest official debating event we attended was a COP simulation, YEYS 2021 (Your Europe Your Say).
All in all, every single one of us appreciates their participation at our MEGA Club. Not only have we built new friendships over the last two years, but also a political knowledge our usual education could never provide. We anticipate that your experiences are similar, and we are very much looking forward to seeing you again!
