FEMINISM & FEMICIDE

What is this about?

  • Feminism preaches gender equality, preaches a society where women and men, in fact, have the same rights. It defends the right of women to be able to walk on the streets without having to hear unpleasant comments, it defends that women can earn the same salary as men when performing the same function, among other claims. Feminism undoes the idea instilled by patriarchal society that women should be rivals with each other.

  • Femicide is a sex-based hate crime term, broadly defined as "the intentional killing of females (women or girls) because they are females", though definitions vary depending on its cultural context.

  • It is usually perpetrated by men, but sometimes female family members may be involved. Femicide differs from male homicide in specific ways. For example, most cases of femicide are committed by partners or ex-partners, and involve ongoing abuse in the home, threats or intimidation, sexual violence or situations where women have less power or fewer resources than their partner.

  • Despite all the achievements of women in recent decades, we still live in a patriarchal and sexist society, in which violence against women and the idea that women are inferior to men are still tolerated.

  • Violence affects 3 in 10 women over a lifetime, and it is estimated that 13.5% of homicides globally involved intimate partners, and these percentages of killings are gendered.
