The Honours in Applied Development Economics (ADE) offers students the opportunity to apply economic and political economy analysis to solving real-world development problems. The programme is unique in that it approaches economics from a pluralist point of view. In this context, pluralism comprises three dimensions: theoretical pluralism; methodological pluralism; and dialogue between economics and other social sciences

The Masters in Applied Development Economics (ADE) builds on the Honours ADE programme. It trains researchers and policy practitioners to understand and address current development challenges, while approaching the study of economics from a pluralist perspective. This unique programme also provides students the opportunity to study important new areas of economics through the elective offerings, among them, courses on gender economics, health economics, and environmental and energy economics.

As South Africa embarks on the road to national health insurance, there has never been a greater need for economic analysis and evaluations of national planning and decision making in the public and private health care sectors. While health economists have performed an essential role in health policy decisions abroad, there is still a shortage of health economics expertise in South Africa and Africa.

The field of Environmental and Energy Economics is designed to provide a thorough understanding of economics and policies associated with climate change and broader foundation of applied microeconomics in energy, environmental and natural resources. More specifically, it applies microeconomics theory and quantitative methods to rigorously examine contemporary environmental, climate, natural resources and energy problems.
