Summary:
Marine heatwaves (MHWs), defined as prolonged periods of extreme warm sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies, have far-reaching impacts on marine biodiversity, ecosystems, and socio-economic sectors. Over the past century, MHWs have become more frequent, intense, and prolonged due to anthropogenic climate change. Nevertheless, these extreme events may be modulated by large-scale climate variability modes across a wide range of spatial and temporal scales. Using large ensemble multi-model simulations, we will explore the role of Atlantic SST-based modes in modulating MHWs occurrences and associated physical mechanisms from interannual to multidecadal timescales. This project will contribute to a deeper understanding of the complex relationship between climate controls (i.e. modes of variability) and extreme ocean temperature events such as MHWs, which is essential for predicting future climate scenarios and impacts.
