JOYRIDE is a short-form interview series that pairs younger generations with older adults as they explore the world together on trishaw bikes. The show is inspired by the global non-profit, Cycling Without Age, which takes older adults on trishaw outings to feel the wind in their hair. From the Santa Barbara coastline to Barcelona beaches, each episode unlocks the lived experiences of today’s older generation, who have become increasingly removed from the flow of daily life. This series will create new conditions for generations to collide, share experiences, and be inspired by a sense of place and nostalgia.
Rodney Chow recently transitioned to living at Wood Glen Senior Living in Santa Barbara, California after selling the ranch he called home for most of his adult life. His 95 years of life experience are packed full of stories from his Chinese ancestors building the railroads in Sacramento, to growing up in east Los Angeles and later starting a ranch in Carpinteria. His new friend Diana takes him on a ride through the Santa Barbara farmers market where he reunites with old friends and reminisces on 95 years of a life well lived.
Retired nurse Birgitta Bexelius, 92, starts her days at Wood Glen Hall in Santa Barbara with a walk and a call to her son. Originally from Sweden, she moved to the U.S. in 1958 and spent 45 years as a nurse, finding joy in caring for others. A lifelong athlete, she recently rediscovered the thrill of movement on a trishaw ride, evoking the freedom of skiing. Birgitta cherishes her memories of a rich life spanning Sweden and California.
Janey, 91, has spent most of her life in San Francisco, dedicating herself to giving love by supporting people with disabilities in finding purpose and independence. On this joyride through Golden Gate Park, she feels the wind in her hair like her days as a runner, pauses to birdwatch with Melissa, and enjoys a surprise saxophone performance—beautifully arranged with Artists and Elders, (created by For You Performance Group), to create meaningful moments for elders through art.
In this episode of Joyride, Cycling Without Age founder Ole Kassow guides riders through Copenhagen, where his movement began. We meet four Danish riders who share how these special trishaws have brought unexpected joy to their lives.
