First Grade Yearly Overview
In first grade, students learn a lot! Students will work together in teams for our SEL program, Getting along together. This program will give our students important skills on how to work together, problem solve, and be an active participant in our classrooms.
Reading:
Our first graders will move around the building each day during our reading block. Students will be placed in various levels of groups for their specific reading level.
Math:
Our first graders will have math everyday, in two different math blocks. They will learn to count to 120, add and subtract, how to make 10, graphing and data, and learn how to tell time and count money.
Science:
Our first graders are able to get lots of experiences with hands-on experiments during science. Throughout our year we will talk about animal traits, survival, and habitats, life cycles, light patterns, sounds, and plants.
Social Studies:
In first grade students will bring home a magazine over our social studies focus for that week. They will learn about government, community, celebrations, geography, history, and economics.
Writing:
First grade mystery writing focuses on building basic sentence fluency, simple descriptive details, and short narrative structures.
Homework:
Students will bring home a SFA book or blue sheet that they will need to read or complete EVERY NIGHT. Students will receive a math packet that reviews the lessons from that week every Monday that is due back to their teacher on Fridays.
