On the 23rd April we ran for the environment and cleaned the Mandela Park collecting 11 kilos of litter in the park saving 16 kilos of CO2 in our planet. Two teams of students of our class won the second and third award for the amount of rubbish that we collected.
It's crucial to me that the world we leave to future generations is better, cleaner, and healthier. However, the fast fashion industry poses one of the greatest threats to our environment, significantly contributing to global pollution and climate change. Every piece of clothing produced has an incalculable cost to our planet, from wasted water resources to the use of hazardous chemicals, to the production of enormous quantities of textile waste.
The fast fashion phenomenon not only impacts the environment, but also exploits workers in precarious working conditions, causing irreparable social damage. According to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, approximately 53 million tons of textile fibers are produced each year, much of which is sent to landfill or incinerated. This figure is expected to double by 2030 if we don't act now. We must call on all environmental and social organizations to work together to end this destructive cycle. I urge governments to introduce stricter laws to regulate the production and consumption of fast fashion and to incentivize sustainable practices widely adopted by responsible brands. Examples of good practices include increased textile recycling, the use of eco-sustainable raw materials, and the implementation of circular economy systems. We call for the creation of a global partnership network between environmental NGOs, ethical companies, and interested governments to promote initiatives for a more ethical and sustainable fashion industry. Only through collaboration and public awareness can we bring about positive change. I invite everyone who wants to see a cleaner world to join this urgent cause. Sign the petition and let's defend our planet from the decline of fast fashion. If we want a bright future for our children and grandchildren, we must act now. Join us, and let's make a difference together.
Here is a presentation about what we do in Sestri Levante (Italy), at school and at home for the environment. This presentation originates from a debate first on a shared board on the esep platform and then from a videoconference where we discussed and suggested a common EU initiative.
