Department Policies

Department Goal:

Technology & Engineering classes are designed to teach students about the technological world we live in. Students will learn conceptual knowledge about past and present technology as well as social, economic, and environmental effects of technological systems. Additionally they will develop various hands-on technical skills and practice problem solving using the engineering design process. Students will apply their english, social studies, math, and science skills to design, construct, use, and evaluate products and systems. Students will will be challenged with "real-world" open-ended problems through “hands-on” design and build activities. Students ultimately develop awareness that technology is a key human survival strategy. Technology & Engineering classes prepare, encourage, and engage capable citizen technologists for the 21st century.

Teaching Approach:

We provide a safe, fun and nurturing environment for learning about technology. We use a student-driven and project-based approach to teach students about the human-made world.

*Although there is much uncertainty surrounding the 2020-21 school year, we are committed to work hard and be creative so that students can still have a hands-on, minds on experience that is authentic and fun.*

Grading Procedure:

We will be following the standards-based grading policy set by the DeWitt Middle School and the Ithaca City School District. We are using the Standards for Technological and Engineering Literacy (STEL) published by the International Technology and Engineering Education Association (ITEEA).

Expectations:

  • Students should be present in class and on time.

  • Students are expected to be respectful of each other's individual opinions.

  • Students are expected to be respectful of each other’s personal space.

  • Students are expected to handle the tools, computers, machines and materials with care and respect

  • Students are expected to abide by the Lab safety rules when working with tools

  • Students must check ICSD email and course Canvas page daily

Behavior Guidelines:

To facilitate the above expectations:

We are all responsible for conducting ourselves professionally and appropriately. Every student has the right to learn at school. Likewise, the teacher has the right to teach. Students are expected to behave in a virtual classroom the same way that they would in the physical classroom.

Disrespectful and disruptive behavior will not be tolerated. The teacher has the right to remove any student from the class meeting and will follow up with parents/guardians as well as the building Principal and/or Assistant Principal.

Laboratory Safety:

Student safety is our first priority at all times. Students are expected to abide by the Lab safety rules and to handle the tools, machines and materials with care and respect whenever in the Technology & Engineering learning spaces. We use the resources published by the International Technology & Engineering Educators Association to ensure student safety at all times.
