Week 2
Day 5:
To round out our week of projects, we embraced the challenge of creating an underwater city/world. The prompt given read: It’s 2080, and the world has exhausted Earth’s resources. Humanity has been forced to adapt to living deep underwater. You have been tasked with designing an entire underwater city. You will need to think about all the little details like the infrastructure of your city (important buildings, transportation), what people will need to learn to do for fun, how they will survive (food and water source) etc. Be as creative as possible! The class ended with a final show and tell moment as we celebrated one another’s work and creativity.
Day 4:
Today in Grow Your Creativity, our class worked together to design an entire outdoor movie space. The given prompt read: A patron of Hong Kong wants to build a permanent outdoor movie theatre for the people of Hong Kong. They want it to be a safe and magical night out for friends and family. You will create a proposal that includes the blueprint for the entire movie theatre as well as booths that will interest or make your customer’s experience more exciting. It must include something that they can take away with them to remember the event. The class ended with a final show and tell moment as we celebrated one another’s work and creativity. We also started the planning stages of tomorrow’s Underwater City prompt as that will be the biggest challenge yet.
Day 3:
Today in Grow Your Creativity, our class worked together to design an entire carnival with multiple different types of rides for people of all ages. The given prompt read: One of the ways the Hong Kong government wants to tackle the mental health problems in Hong Kong is to focus on promoting the family unit. They have hired you to help create a family-focused carnival with at least 8 rides or booths that will allow parents to enjoy a day out with their primary to middle school-aged children. The plan for the carnival should include a blueprint of the park as well as considerations for food and seating. The class ended with a final show and tell moment as we celebrated one another’s work and creativity.
Day 2:
Today in Grow Your Creativity, our class worked together to build their own movie-based merchandise. The prompt given was: MCL Cinemas has hired you to design 5 promotional items for their How to Train Your Dragon movie marathon event where every week of a month they show one new installation of the popular series. Design thoughtful products that help promote the movie and get the fans super excited to collect them all. The pieces should all be interactive and appropriate for a movie theatre while still being awesome enough to go viral online. The class ended with a final show and tell moment as we celebrated one another’s work and creativity.
Day 1:
Welcome to Grow Your Creativity! Today in class, we kicked off with introductions and an icebreaker, then got straight into the heart of what this course is all about, pushing ourselves to think in entirely new ways, stepping outside the box, and learning to take tiny sparks of inspiration from the world around us and run with them into something fresh and original (while always leaning on our classmates for feedback, because teamwork is an incredibly important life skill). After a quick look at what our daily schedule will look like this week, we tackled our very first real-world prompt: A famous band is coming to Hong Kong. This band knows that in Hong Kong, concerts usually start quite late. They hired your team to come up with a way to create some pop-up experiences that fans can go to in order to pass the time quickly. They don’t want simple merchandise stands; they want experiences that allow for fans to interact with one another and meet new people in the community. The class ended with a final show and tell moment as we celebrated one another’s work and creativity.
Week 1
Day 5:
The culmination of our week of projects ends in our biggest challenge yet - designing a donation swap. The prompt reads: The non-profit organisation Crossroads wants to bring awareness to the amount of trash being thrown away in Hong Kong by creating a donation swap targeted at getting children to swap things in good condition rather than throw them away. You are tasked with building a structure where these swaps will take place. Students spent some time brainstorming and researching all the different things that children “grow out of”. They also learned about the amount of discarded things Hong Kong goes through and what the needs are in our community. Students will then design a new building that will be very friendly for children and young people to use in order to create a system to allow people to swap or pass on their things that are still in good condition.
Day 4:
Today in Grow Your Creativity, our class worked together to build their own roller coasters. The prompt given was: A Hong Kong business wants to add a new ride to The Carnival based on something from popular culture (movie/anime/game). They want it to be an immersive experience - something that engages multiple senses and translates a scene from the inspiration into an experience for the audience. The students talked about different types of rides and how they all aim to engage your senses to create an experience. Students then created their own variations of rollercoasters or immersive ride experiences that reflected their chosen movie or game. The class ended with a final show and tell moment as we celebrated one another’s work and creativity.
Day 3:
Today, by popular demand, students have requested we do a prompt based on the Fifa World Cup. The prompt states: Hong Kong has been selected to host the official Fifa World Cup Celebration that will celebrate the final 6 teams. They have hired you to create an event that celebrates each of these cultures through food, music etc. Each “booth” needs a space to watch the matches with people who support the same team. You also need to redesign limited edition clothing merchandise for fans to buy to support their team. There also needs to be something they are able to leave with to remember this experience. The class was divided into 6 groups and learned more of their assigned culture before creating experiences for their team. The class ended with a final show and tell moment as we celebrated one another’s work and creativity.
Day 2:
Today in Grow Your Creativity Class we warmed up our sketching muscles with a fun hybrid exercise—combining an everyday object from our rooms with an animal to invent something entirely new (and useful!), then jumped into our second major challenge: a charity of your child's own creation has hired them to build a full brand for a brand-new Hong Kong carnival, complete with a mascot and merchandise line to promote their cause, with all profits going to the charity (and the HK government fully on board). We explored the symbolism behind different animals—like how lions represent kingship in African cultures and protect against evil spirits in Chinese traditions—to help inform their mascot choices, then brainstormed a huge range of merchandise ideas from t-shirts and tote bags to pins and beyond. The end goal for each student was to craft a complete mascot plan (look, color scheme, meaning, and most importantly—a NAME with a reason behind it), pitch it to me for a green light, then design at least four fully functional merchandise pieces before starting their polished final version for tomorrow's critique. Be sure to ask your child about their charity's cause and the mascot they dreamed up!
Day 1:
Today in Grow Your Creativity Class we kicked off with introductions and an icebreaker, then got straight into the heart of what this course is all about—pushing ourselves to think in entirely new ways, stepping outside the box, and learning to take tiny sparks of inspiration from the world around us and run with them into something fresh and original (while always leaning on our classmates for feedback, because teamwork is an incredibly important life skill). After a quick look at what our daily schedule will look like this week, we tackled our very first real-world prompt: The HK Ballet Company are putting on their annual Nutcracker Production and want to create a pop-up space/s where children and parents can have a fun day out with their children while promoting the show. They have hired you to create an interactive experience that will take place somewhere in Hong Kong.
We started the process by looking at photo inspiration of the ballet as well as a variety of pop-up booths, then partnered up to develop a complete plan—pinpointing the location (mall, park, or beyond?), dreaming up interactive activities, and mapping out the booth's layout, color schemes, and required materials. The end goal for each pair was to pitch their concept to me for a green light, then start crafting their final polished version to share with the group during tomorrow's critique. Be sure to ask your child what they came up with!
