Ruqya in Arabic means healing by the Islamic way according to the Sharia (ie only Qur'an and Sunnah). This is done by applying the Qur'an (THE WORDS OF ALLAH SWT) on the patients.
We are told in the Qur'an that Prophet Ibraheem, alayhi salam, said, "And when I am ill, it is He Who cures me." [26:80]
The Prophet, peace be upon him, said: "There is a remedy for every malady, and when the remedy is applied to the disease it cures it with the permission of Allah, the Exalted and Glorious." (Muslim) Also, the Prophet, peace be upon him, said, "Make use of the two remedies: honey and the Qur'an." (Tirmithi)
The use of spiritual forms of healing, such as payers and meditation has become quite popular. This is in part a result of a resurgence in religion and so-called "New Age" beliefs. Major medical centers and health care institutions are even studying the effects of salah on healing. For Islamic purposes, the use of specialized prayers (dua) or Qur'anic verses is known as Ruqya. The Prophet, peace be upon him, and his companions used this method of healing, as evidenced by many ahadith in Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawud, Tirmithi, and others. Muslims are advised to provide Ruqya for Muslims and even non-Muslims that are sick. The sick is also able to provide Ruqya for themselves. Ruqya is a valuable tool for treating a variety of disorders and diseases. This may include snake or scorpion bite, the evil eye (or envy), and psychological problems that Jinn may cause.
Aisha (Radhiallaahu Anha) narrated that the Prophet, peace be upon him, used the following dua when family members were sick, "Allahumma Rabban-nas, adh-hibil-ba's, washfi, Antash-Shafee, la shifa'a, ilia shifa'uk, shifa'an la yughadiru saqaman. (O Allah, Lord of mankind! Remove this disease and cure him. You are the Great Curer, there is no cure but through You that leaves behind no disease.)" (Bukhari and Muslim)
The Prophet, peace be upon him, told Amr ibnul Aas, "Place your hand where you feel pain and say 'Bismillah' three times, and then repeat seven times A'oudho bi'izzatil-lahi wa qudratihi min sharri ma ajidu wa 'uhadhir. (I seek refuge with Allah and with His Power from the evil that afflicts me and that which I apprehend.)" (Muslim)
Suratul-Fatihah, the opening surah of the Qur'an, is also recommended as a cure for sicknesses and diseases. Allah's Messenger said, "Fatihatul Kitab contains healing for every disease." (Tirmithi)
Bukhari has reported that several of the Prophet's companions used Suratul-Fatihah as a treatment for a snake or scorpion bite. They returned to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and asked for the permissibility of receiving a sheep in payment for providing the Ruqya. The Prophet, peace be upon him, then asked how they knew that Suratul-Fatihah was a Ruqya. He (peace be upon him), added that they had done the right thing. Bukhari has also reported that Suratul Falaq and Suratun Nas (surahs 113 and 114) are also protections against illness and evil. One hadeeth has reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) would recite mu'awwidhat (Suratul Falaq and Suratun Nas). He would then blow his breath into his hands and rub his hands over his body, hoping for its blessings. Tirmithi has reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to seek protection against jinn and the evil eye until Suratul Falaq and Suratun Nas were revealed. After they were revealed, he held to them and discarded everything beside them.

How do I know if I have Sihr "Magic" on me?
We get this question a lot. Many people could be victims of black magic, voodoo, or any other type of Sihr "Magic" cast on them by those who wish them harm, especially that these kinds of magic could cause serious impacts on people’s lives. We had many cases where there was an inability to move all the way to even unexplained repeated pregnancy miscarriages.
Here we will give you some guidance on how to self-diagnose and what are the common symptoms that you should be looking out for and seek assistance or work on self-Ruqya “not advised in most cases” but it is a start.
General Sihr symptoms:
While awake some several signs or symptoms might indicate that you are a victim of Sihr "Magic". One example of one of these common symptoms is when you notice that your wife is rejecting you for no apparent reason. Or if you feel that she is not as loving as she used to be in the past such as in a form of a sudden change in her behavior. In this example, sometimes this is accompanied by erectile dysfunction or inability to finish the marital duty with your wife or vice-versa. Another example of one of the major signs is also the marriage block, i.e., no matter how ready you are for marriage, you still have a hard time getting married. Sometimes it does not make any sense to you but there is a great reason why things are going down that way.
There are many other signs that you should not disregard like when your life is oddly unstable, or when you become moody with a wave of extreme anger. Even sometimes you would feel like crying and you do not know why. Some of these symptoms have to do with your ability to make decisions, where you find yourself making different decisions about the same matter without being able to settle.
Also, random emotions like feeling the need to laugh or crying without a clear reason. Here is a summary of many other symptoms that you should be looking out for:
1. Staying away from the faith, tendency to fall into committing sins.
2. Feeling bothered when hearing the Quran.
3. Struggling with reading the Quran, especially with Surah Baqarah.
4. Repeated nightmares and disturbing dreams.
5. Distracted attention, poor concentration, and a lot of absent-mindedness.
6. Vomiting, feeling the urge to vomit or blood coming out without any medical explanation.
7. Constant bleeding for women and or repeated miscarriages.
8. Repeated failure in marriages while being unable to maintain a marriage.
9. Receiving a direct threat from anyone promising you to never find success in your life or your children's life.
10. Visiting those who practice sorcery and they offered you incense for protection.
11. Constant headache, pain especially near water "sea, ocean, etc" or when the wind blows, or while passing near graveyards, where you would feel increasing pain in your stomach with the urge to vomit or pain in your feet or common ache in your entire body.
12. Unexplained bruises in your body when you wake up.
13. Feeling stomachache now and then without and medical explanation.
What to do if you fear that you have one of the symptoms?
You must seek assistance immediately before things get worse. If you notice that you or your loved ones are struggling with these symptoms, then you should not disregard them or ignore them as these things could have a great impact on everyone's life. There are some cases where the damage became irreversible and permanent.
How can I protect myself and my family?
You must be keen on actions that bring you and them closer to Allah Almighty and protect you from evils, including the following:
§ The realization of faith in the heart that everything that strikes a person from Allah Almighty, and Allah Almighty does not befall Man except with what is best for him, and if a person does not know in his minor eyes that that is good for him, the Almighty said: (And if Allah should touch you with adversity, there is no remover of it except Him. And if He touches you with good - then He is over all things competent).
§ Weakening Satan and push him away by strengthening your faith, the Almighty said: “(98 ) So when you recite the Qur'an, [first] seek refuge in Allah from Satan, the expelled [from His mercy]. (99 ) Indeed, there is for him no authority over those who have believed and rely upon their Lord.".
§ Maintaining daily reading of Ayat al-Kursi.
§ Read the last two verses of Surat Al-Baqarah.
§ Daily reading; Surat Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and Al-Nas.
Sihr is denoted from the meaning either hidden or secret, and because the practitioners of sihr deal in secrecy in order so that they can to draw closer to shaytān. The term magic is utilised between both the sāhir and shayāteen, to seek help from each other by means of creating problems within society, which is the essence of sihr. Sihr permits something to appear i.e. illusions, deception to confuse people and to deceive their eyes, by means of making the false appear to be the truth. The evidence is that Allāh (SWT) says (interpretation of the meaning) “They said: ‘O MŪSĀ! Either you throw first or we be the first to throw?” [Qur'ān, 20: 65]. Mūsā said: “Nay, throw you (first)!’ Then behold! their ropes and their sticks, by their magic, appeared to him as though they moved fast.” [Qur'ān, 20:66). And Allāh (SWT) knows best.
There has been a wide difference of opinion among the scholars of fiqh, jurists and other scholars because of its nature, so the definition varies widely. Sihr is anything that the cause of which is hidden, and which appears in a form other than its real one, with the intention to distort the reality of things and deceive. Al Badawi said what is meant by sihr is that one seeks to be close with Shaytaan to achieve what man cannot accomplish by himself. Not just anybody can achieve this goal of acquiring the knowledge of magic, the soul of the person has to be as evil as Shaytan. The knowledge of witchcraft is based on certain jewels and numbers, looking at star signs, astrology and taking objects and picture of the person and applying them at the correct time and words of evil and immorality are used. In this he seeks satanic help, and this is the way the person is afflicted in a strange way, which cannot be explained to the mind of man. This is against the laws of Islam. Sihr is made up of the effects of evil spirits and the reaction of the soul whether it be weak or strong to combat the force. The Hanbali’s say sihr is knots, speaking spells, writing, and acts that effects a person heart, body, or mind indirectly.
Al Badawi (RA) said what is meant by back magic is that one seeks to be close to the Shaytaan in order to achieve that which man cannot accomplish by himself. Not anyone can achieve the goal of acquiring the knowledge of magic; the soul of the person has to be evil and wicked as Shaytaan. The knowledge of witchcraft is based on certain jewels and numbers, looking at star signs, astrology and taking objects and pictures of a person and then applying them at the correct time along with words of evil and immorality. In this he seeks satanic help and this is the way the person is afflicted in a strange way which cannot be explained logically. All of this is against the laws of Islam.
The Hanbali’s say black magic is knots, speaking spells, writing and acts that effect a person’s heart, mind or body indirectly.
Ibn Qudama Al-Maqdisi (RA) said black magic is a set of knots, incantations and words uttered or written, carried out in such a way as to affect the body of the subject, his heart or mind without coming into contact with him/her. The reality of black magic is that there are types that can kill, sicken or thwart a man’s sexual intercourse with his wife. Other types can separate spouses and make them hate or love each other. (Al-Mughni)
Ibn Al-Qayyim (RA) said black magic is a combination of the effects of evil spirits and the reaction of natural forces. (Zaad Al Ma’ad)
Black Magic is an agreement between a sorcerer and a shaytaan which stipulates that a sorcerer fulfil the shaytaan’s requests by committing certain illegal or polytheistic acts in return for the shaytaan to assist and obey the sorcerers requests. Below are some examples of the conditions that a sorcerer must fulfil:
using the Qur’an as footwear to go to the toilet
writing some Qur’anic versus with filth
writing some Qur’anic versus with menus discharge
writing some Qur’anic versus under the sorcerer’s feet
anagrammatizing (writing in reverse) the opening chapter (Al-Fatihah) of the Qur’an.
performing prayers without ablution
remaining in a state of Janaaba (major impurity)
sacrificing animals in the name of shaytan and not in the name of Allah and placing the carcass at a location specified by the shaytaan.
prostrating to other than Allah (SWT), whether it is a human, jinn, planet, object etc
committing incest
writing incantations with that which constitutes disbelief
It is thus clear that the Jinn do not assist the sorcerer without something in return, and the greater the sorcerers disbelief, the faster and more obedient the shaytaan is to him/ her in executing the orders given.
He asks about one’s name and one’s mother’s name.
He demands the slaughter of an animal or bird whether it has specific characteristics or not. He could also ask for the blood to be smeared on the sick person or may not ask.
He tells the sick person to eat a certain kind of food or to drink a certain kind of drink for a specific period of time whilst keeping away from people in a darkened room during this period.
He gives the sick person paper to burn and scent himself with the smoke (like incense), or to hang the paper or bury it.
Drawing letters, numbers, hexagons or tearing up the words of Allah.
Uttering incomprehensible words or words in a language other than Arabic or a language known and understood by the people.
There are certain signs and symptoms that show in a person who has been bewitched. Signs and symptoms will be individual to the person and may not necessarily be obvious. This can be the case especially if they are close to Allah (SWT). The effects of sihr may not take control of them in the same way or to the same extent it might do to someone who is not particularly mindful of Allah, so therefore generally it will not be obvious to the untrained eye. The signs of sihr may be similar or identical to the signs of Ayn (Evil eye) or Hasad (Envy), and may even resemble the signs of a person possessed by a jinn, either physically or mentally. The way to differentiate between the different afflictions is through Ruqya.
Some scholars differ in their understanding of the existence of sihr and its capacity to have a real impact. They claim sihr has no real effect on a person and that it is all in the imagination. They deny all kinds of magic and believe that in reality it is all in the imagination and suggest that is the opposite of reality. Some claim that it only affects a person if it is made with poison or smoke etc and that it needs to come in contact with the person.
There are two types of Magic, they are:
Through suggestion, illusionists, mediums, tricks, deception and the speed of the hand illusion.
The use of evil spirits, sorcery, witchcraft, voodoo etc which all have an effect on man as a whole.
Magic can only have the capability to affect aspects of a person’s life by the will of Allah (SWT). Below are some examples of things that people perform magic to:
Upon a husband and wife to cause separation
To suppress a man’s desire for his wife and the wife’s desire for her husband
To cause miscarriage, blocking of the fallopian tubes, disabling the ovaries, fertility issues
Constant bleeding for a woman or the opposite wherein no menstrual cycle takes place
Causing a man to love a particular woman so he marries her or vice-versa
To encourage a person to fall into adultery and immorality whether the motive of the magician is for love, revenge or to destroy a person’s reputation
To separate families and destroy them
To torment a person with insomnia, loss of appetite, daydreaming, tightness in chest, sadness and depression, a feeling of pain the body etc
Using magic for murder by various methods, e.g. arson in the home. This can happen by the jinn carrying it out themselves in a physical form or by taking possession of a person
Magic can be used in robberies, extortion, deceptive scamming of a person in their home, theft of valuables, obtaining of money or bank details without a person’s will
Magic is used to affect businesses and trade, whether small or major corporations
Magic can be used to cause all types of sicknesses and illnesses even diseases that doctors themselves cannot define
Magic can be used in the kidnapping of people
To cause illusions i.e. tricks of the eyes so people cannot see what is really happening, as in the time of the Prophet Musa (peace be upon him)
Magic can be cast upon a piece of land wherein the intent is to destroy the land and stop any rain falling onto it
In a person’s character, habits, ethics and transactions
In harming animals or insects or using them during the magic process
A person complaining of being unable to interact with their spouse
feeling extreme hatred towards their spouse
sexual problems such as incompletion of sexual intercourse
Someone may find it difficult to marry although there would be no obvious indication as to why they cannot.
Inability to reconcile a marriage (a person’s family may also be affected by magic in this scenario)
Finding objects which magic are used upon in the home or car like a Taweez (within which you find a talsam i.e. patterns).
Beads
Strange shaped stones
Unusual dust or powder such as flour scattered inside or outside the home
Pins and needles that are poked into the furniture or around the home
Holes that have been cut out of peoples garments
Clothes that have been missing and then found again
Finding clothes that have been stained with the likes of blood
Finding strange scary objects and smells in the bathroom
Symbols carved inside or outside the home
Seeing water or liquid sprinkled outside the home by the doorway or over the doorstep
Broken eggs on the doorstep
Cats that have been slaughtered
Nails that have been nailed into the door
Being extremely volatile
Always changing plans
Anger occurring for small things
Crying for no reason
Staying away from deen
No focus in prayer
Abandoning the Qur’an
Tendency towards sin
Eyes appearing as if has been taking drugs
Vomiting or feeling the want to vomit
Blood pouring out of the mouth without a medical reason
Continuous bleeding for women
Repeated miscarriage
Divorce and re-marrying between a husband and wife for no reason
Receiving threats from close family members such as them not getting married, or getting a job or threats that they will separate you from your children, husband/wife and then find those threats come to pass.
Going to a magician and drinking their water or inhaling their bukhoor
Constant headaches and feeling pain in the stomach
Wanting to vomit when going to the sea, when wind is blowing or walking by graves
Constant dreaming
Restless sleeping, frequent movement and strange noises as moaning and groaning or laughing and crying.
A vision of a magician i.e. witch doctor or an evil man or woman
Seeing the jinn threatening the patient to stop following the treatment.
To see in the dream that the magic ”sihr” has been renewed by means of drinking or eating and finding the taste of the substance of the drink or food when one wakes up.
Prevention of magic could be done in a legitimate/ permissible way or in a forbidden way, which would constitute shirk. The same goes with the curing of magic. It could be done through a legitimate/ permissible method or by that which is forbidden in the religion. Therefore it is important to seek protection in Allah (SWT) daily from magic because of its great dangers and many complications to a person.
Discussing the topic of the different types of treatment of magic is a long discussion and a paragraph is not sufficient. Many methods have been narrated to us through our pious predecessors. However from the permissible methods which can be used to treat magic and its like are:
The correct faith. This is no doubt a help in the battle against magic and magicians
The 5 daily prayers and protecting them through offering additional recommended prayers. The next best after the 5 prayers is the night prayers
Reading the Qur’an and in specific surat Al-Baqarah every three days. This is a huge step towards the prevention of sihr by the will of Allah (SWT)
Morning & evening supplications and the other supplications such as before eating, before sleeping, leaving the home, entering the masjid etc
Eating seven Ajwa dates every morning
Taking precautions and being vigilant from those who practice sihr and who ask for it, and staying away from the books of sihr
Ruqya programs against sihr
Brothers and sisters that are afflicted with magic or have symptoms of magic, please dedicate at least 4-5 hours daily (more if you can) to the following Ruqya program for a duration of one month.
Recite Surat Al-Baqarah at least once daily (more for those able). For those of us that struggle with the recitation itself or with difficulty completing the recitation during one session, i advise listening to an audio recitation and putting your finger on the words of the Qur’an from a Mushaf following the recitation of the reciter.
Recite Surat Al-Falaq throughout the day (even while doing chores, shopping etc)
Recite the following frequently: “Sorcery, Allah will surely make it of no effect” (Yunus: 81) or Magic, surely Allah will destroy it.
Listen to the sihr ruqya audio on www.alruqya.co.uk
Listen to the ruqya audio on the alruqya.co.uk website that is specific to the problem of the sihr. For example if one is unable to have children, they should listen to the divorce ruqya audio, in addition to the sihr audio.
Keep in mind that in the beginning, you may not know where the sihr is and what type of Jinn possession you are afflicted with, however once you start your ruqya program alongside a lot of dua to Allah (SWT), things will become more apparent inshallah. During the course of the program one may be guided in a dream regarding the location of the sihr. If for example one sees mountains in their dreams, they should listen to the audio titled “Mountains” or if they find themselves swimming then they should listen to the audio titled “versus of the sea”, in addition to the sihr audio. If you see birds in your dream then you should listen to the audio titled “birds” alongside the sihr audio.
Ayn or Evil Eye is something that is passed on which comes out from the soul of a person and not from the eyes, as some people believe. A person can give Ayn to himself/ herself, they can afflict those whom they dislike or even those whom they love. Unlike sihr, ayn is something that cannot be learnt or sought after rather ayn is something that people already have within themselves and its strength varies depending on different people.
Hasad is a drive that a person has which comes from within the soul by which they envy and hate someone who has been given a blessing from Allah (SWT). They desire that the blessing be removed from such a person and desire it for themselves. The results of such a disease often lead a person to speaking or acting in a malicious way. The similarities between ayn and hasad is that both can cause harm and afflict others without necessarily seeing the individual but simply upon hearing about them. However unlike ayn, you cannot afflict yourself with hasad. Hasad is also something that can be controlled and a person can control it by suppressing it and sincerely asking Allah (SWT) to remove it from them.
One of the differences between sihr and ayn/hasad is that sihr is a type of knowledge that can be taught and learnt. Therefore in order to cause harm to an individual through sihr you must obtain this knowledge or go to somebody who has learnt this knowledge. Whereas with hasad, a person simply needs to have envy and hate towards an individual to harm them. Hence, sihr and hasad are separated by actions but are similar in the sense that both are evil in nature and both require intentions to cause harm. Whilst ayn requires no intention from the person because the person giving ayn doesn’t even realise that they are giving it.
Cats (especially black cats, said to possess a magic bone, hair)
Dogs (especially black dogs or junkyard dogs, hair)
Cattle (horns, hair, tongue, or milk)

The Arabic word Jinn means “hidden from sight”, taken from the Arabic root word jann i.e. to hide or hidden. The jinn are a creation of Allāh (SWT), made from smokeless fire, have free will just like human beings, and can choose from right and wrong. According to the consensus of the Imāms of Ahl us-Sunnah wal-Jamā'ah, it is evident that a Jinn may possess a human, as Allāh (SWT) says (interpretation of the meaning): “Those who eat ribā [usury] will not stand (on the Day of Resurrection) except like the standing of a person beaten by shaytān leading him to insanity.” (Qur’ān, 2:275). Jinn possession is often referred to a type of sickness, hence in Arabic, the word mass (possession) is used to refer to junoon (insanity). A jinn may possess a human based on several reasons, with the vast majority through sihr and al-'Ayn. However, it is necessary for the afflicted person to seek closeness to Allāh (SWT) by means which is prescribed in the Sharī'ah and abstain from that which is not from the Deen. And Allāh (SWT) knows best.
1. Revenge When a jinn possesses a human being for revenge, it is usually because the human has caused harm to it, or the jinn thinks the person has intentionally caused it harm. The ways in which a human can cause harm to the jinn When the jinn possess a human for revenge it usually due to one of the following reasons:
Pouring boiling water: Boiling water can cause harm to the jinn or even kill them. If a person for example pours boiling water in the bathroom or in the lavatory while cleaning, and does not say bismillah before they pour water, a jinn could be sleeping there, perhaps a baby, or a young jinn and they will be killed or harmed, and the family, or tribe of the jinn will want to take revenge.
Urinating in places where jinn reside: The jinn reside in places where human beings do not frequently visit, and tend to take control of these areas and make them their homes. For example, insect holes, caves or woodlands. If a jinn is sleeping or sitting with his family by a bush for example, and a human comes and urinates there, where the jinn resides, and he doesn’t say bismillah beforehand, the jinn can take control of him, since they feel that he has caused them harm, so the effect will be that they will cause him harm in return. I have personally seen this happen where a brother came to me, I read ruqya for him, and the jinn had explained that he had taken control of this person because of his actions in a park.
Harming animals that have jinn in them: Jinn can take the form of animals/Jinn can live in animals, particularly black animals, and so if a person harms an animal, particularly at night, these can be jinn and they can harm you back. Shaykh al-Islam, Ibn Taymiyyah, said: The jinn may appear in human and animal form, so they may appear as snakes and scorpions etc., or in the form of camels, cattle, sheep, horses, mules and donkeys, or in the form of birds, or in the form of humans, as the Shaytaan came to Quraysh in the form of Suraaqah ibn Maalik ibn Ju’sham when they wanted to set out for Badr. (Majmoo’ al-Fataawa, 19/44.) According to the Prophet ﷺ, if a snake enters your home, it may be a jinn, and so you must give it the time and option to leave, for 3 days and if it still refuses then kill it as it is Shaytaan. Avoid black cats and dogs. “…There are in Medina jinns who have accepted Islam, so when you see any one of them, pronounce a warning to it for three days, and if they appear before you after that, then kill it for that is a devil.” (Book #026, Hadith #5557)
Shouting out loud, wailing, singing or reciting Qur’an in the toilet: This is something I have had experience with. A brother who came to me for ruqya had been speaking to himself in the toilet. Slowly he went into conversation with the Shayateen, saying he was stronger than them, and that they couldn’t do anything to him. The Jinn possessed him, and he was to blame, because he was the one who told the jinn to present themselves.
Jumping from a high place without saying bismillah: If a person says bismillah before an act, the jinn can hear it, and they will not ignore it. Sometimes a characteristic of the jinn is that they are arrogant, so it doesn’t matter to them if they see you, they think you can see them, but deep down they know you cannot. In turn they let you harm them, nudge or touch them and then they will touch you back. That evening you will not sleep all night, tossing and turning until they have had enough, then they will go back to their family – if they don’t like to possess humans, they want to live freely in the wilderness, settle and travel the way they want to. Whereas there are some jinn that want to live a material life, and to be in a human and that’s when they enter them.
Throwing stones or objects in the wilderness without saying bismillah: If a person throws something it can hit and can harm the jinn. The person should always start with bismillah before he does this. Reading books on magic and calling upon the jinn to present themselves: This can cause harm. I have seen this happen. The person may get attacked and harmed, played with or possessed. This is the result of playing with Shaytaan, which is why it is forbidden for us to read these books. Spraying insect killer without saying bismillah: As mentioned jinn can take the form of insects and animals, and so if a person uses insect killer without saying bismillah they can kill the jinn.
2. Indirect Revenge This happens when a person is doing their Adhkaar, reciting Qur’an, staying away from haram to the best of their ability and is obedient to Allah azza wa jal, the jinn does not have anyway to attack the intended target, except through a those closest to him/her, for example the husband or wife etc.
3. One who turns away from the remembrance of Allah A jinn will oppress a human being woo is heedless of the remembrance of Allah swt. We have to remember the jinn are not without intelligence, they have intellect. They will plan and wait until a person is exposed or a member of the family is also exposed. A person must always be calling upon Allah swt to help and protect him/her, which is why the morning and even remembrance of Allah is so important as this does not render a person exposed to such vigilance on the part of the attacking jinn. And whoever is blinded from remembrance of the most merciful, we appoint for him a devil and he is to him a companion (43:36).
4. Lustful desire. Al Jinn al Ashiq is not a new expression or understanding. Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah said the possession of man by jinn can be out of sexual desire, evil notions, or even love just as it is with humans which is Fahsha’a, i.e. immorality and bad conduct which is forbidden, that is if the two have agreed on the act. However if only the jinn is doing this out of their will it is oppression. The one who is committing this crime must be informed of there actions and they will be judged according to Allah and His messenger’s laws which were sent for man and jinn. Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah said taking pleasure in something or someone is to get what they want from the person or thing as what they wish or desire. This falls under all types of pleasure. The jinn will bring thing for them to please man , an image or money, take revenge on someone through murder, and in return they require man to obey the jinn by making them do acts of shirk, such as sujood to the jinn or another object or taking pleasure in them. And [mention, O Muhammad], the Day when He will gather them together [and say], “O company of jinn, you have [misled] many of mankind.” And their allies among mankind will say, “Our Lord, some of us made use of others, and we have [now] reached our term, which you appointed for us.” He will say, “The Fire is your residence, wherein you will abide eternally, except for what Allah wills. Indeed, your Lord is Wise and Knowing.” http://ruqyainlondon.com/blog/jinn-ashiq
5. Sihr The jinn accompany the one who has been bewitched to accomplish his goal. A person who visits a Saahir can be possessed.
6. ‘Ayn A Shaytaan will enter a person body through the channel of the evil eye, from the nafs of the one who has given the eye. The Shaytaan will see this channel from the person who gives the evil eye, through jealousy or envy, and will enter the person’s body through this channel.
7. Zaar Zaar is a trance ceremony that uses drumming and dancing to cure an illness thought to be caused by a demon, it is prohibited by Islam as a pagan practice. The participants will form a circle and dance until they start losing control of their bodies and the jinn will enter them. Even if one is not taking part, but is present they can be possessed because they are not in a gathering of the remembrance of Allah azza wa jal, but a gathering of the remembrance of Shaytaan. In most places that are gatherings of Shaytaan, the possibility arises for a person to be possessed. I have had an experiences where patients have been raving, staying out late, listening to loud music, dancing, taking drugs and drinking alcohol and all types of Al Munkar and Al Fahsha’ will be there, and so this is a time when the Shayateen will be there and they will possess a human being. Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah said there is time that a person who has been possessed out of love, this type is less difficult as others, such as revenge by possession, or by pouring hot water or killing them without knowing, and this is the most difficult type of possession. What this means, Allahu Alim, is that the possession of a jinn who is taking a revenge is different to the one who possesses for love, they are not trying to kill them, they just want to be with them, even though they can cause them a lot of harm by making them ill, or not appear nice. These are tricks the jinn do so that the person is just theirs, but when it is revenge they are trying to kill the individual. And Allah knows best.
“The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: ‘The jinn are of three types: a types that has wings, and they fly through the air; a type that looks like snakes and dogs; and a type that stops for a rest then resumes its journey.” (reported by al-Tahhaawi in Mushkil al-Athaar, 4/95, and by al-Tabaraani in al-Kabeer, 22/214. Shaykh al-Albaani said in al-Mishkaat (2/1206, no. 4148): al-Tahhaawi and Abu’l-Shaykh reported it with a saheehisnaad).
ومن هذه الأصناف الثلاثة الجن الصالح والشيطان والمارد والمريد والعفريت
Form this three types of jinns they are pious rebellious, mareed, maarid, Afreet, Allah mentions them in the Quran.
يقول تعالى: في سورة الصافات :} وَحِفْظاً مّن كُلّ شَيْطَانٍ مّارِد
And as protection against every (maarid),rebellious devil Surat Aş-Şāffāt 37:7
{ وفي سورة الحج: } وَمِنَ النّاسِ مَن يُجَادِلُ فِي اللّهِ بِغَيْرِ عِلْمٍ وَيَتّبِعُ كُلّ شَيْطَانٍ مّرِيدٍ
And of the people is he who disputes about Allah without knowledge and follows every (mareed) rebellious devil.Surat Al-Ĥaj 23:3
A (Afreet) powerful one from among the jinn said, “I will bring it to you before you rise from your place, and indeed, I am for this [task] strong and trustworthy.” Surat An-Naml (The Ant) – 27: 39
ومنهم الطيار كما ورد في الحديث ، ومنهم الغواص كما قال الله تعالى في سورة ص : } وَالشّيَاطِينَ كُلّ بَنّآءٍ وَغَوّاصٍ
From them that fly like mentioned in the above hadeeth and those who dive and swim as Allah mentioned in the Quran
He devils [of jinn] – every builder and diver Surat Şād (The Letter “Saad”) 38:37 ومن الجن من دينه الإسلام ومنهم الكافر اليهودي والنصراني والمجوسي وباقي الديانات الأخرى
They have the ability to think and reflect. Similarly, to man they also have the ability to choose between the path of good and the path of evil in the same manner as humans The jinn have their own sect and groups of Muslim, sunny, shear, suufy, Jews, Zionist, Christians, Catholics, Masson, Buddhist, Hindu, Sun, sea, mountains, stones, moon, fire worshipers…etc
Allah clearly states in Quran that He is the Creator of man and jinns, he is the most wise and the only one worth of warship.
وَمَا خَلَقْتُ الْجِنَّ وَالْإِنسَ إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُونِ
And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me. Surat Adh-Dhāriyāt 51:56
مَا أُرِيدُ مِنْهُم مِّن رِّزْقٍ وَمَا أُرِيدُ أَن يُطْعِمُونِ
I do not want from them any provision, nor do I want them to feed Me.
Allah Says about the jinn speaking about their faith: And among us are the righteous, and among us are [others] not so; we were [of] divided ways. Surat Al-Jinn 72:11 And among us are Muslims [in submission to Allah], and among us are the unjust. And whoever has become Muslim – those have sought out the right course.Surat Al-Jinn 72:14 فمنهم العاقل الذكي ومنهم المغفل الغبي
From them who are intelligent, clever and smart they have intellect, and who have reason and wit about them and amongst them are those who are heedless.
And We have certainly created for Hell many of the jinn and mankind. They have hearts with which they do not understand, they have eyes with which they do not see, and they have ears with which they do not hear. Those are like livestock; rather, they are more astray. It is they who are the heedless.Surat Al A raf 7:179
They can build buildings and make things as Allah says: يَعْمَلُونَ لَهُ مَا يَشَاءُ مِن مَّحَارِيبَ وَتَمَاثِيلَ وَجِفَانٍ كَالْجَوَابِ وَقُدُورٍ رَّاسِيَاتٍ ۚ اعْمَلُوا آلَ دَاوُودَ شُكْرًا ۚ وَقَلِيلٌ مِّنْ عِبَادِيَ الشَّكُورُ
They made for him what he willed of elevated chambers, statues, bowls like reservoirs, and stationary kettles. [We said], “Work, O family of David, in gratitude.” And few of My servants are grateful. Surat Saba 34:13 They have their own society tribes kingdoms, works, slaves, rulers, soldiers:
وَمَا مِن دَابَّةٍ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَلَا طَائِرٍ يَطِيرُ بِجَنَاحَيْهِ إِلَّا أُمَمٌ أَمْثَالُكُم ۚ مَّا فَرَّطْنَا فِي الْكِتَابِ مِن شَيْءٍ ۚ ثُمَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِمْ يُحْشَرُونَ And there is no creature on[or within]
Dealing with the jinn is a serious issue, and is a door that leads to evil and mischief; Shirk only came to mankind through them. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, telling us how Allaah taught His slaves: ‘I have created all My slaves with the inclination to worship Me alone, but the devils come to them and turn them away from their religion. They forbid to them that which I have permitted to them, and they tell them to associate others with me for which I have not sent down any authority.’ Narrated by Muslim (2865).
There are believers and Muslims among the jinn, and also kaafirs and evildoers. But the fact that they are concealed from man means that we cannot be sure about any one of them, and gives us cause for concern about their tricks and treachery, especially with the spread of ignorance and bid’ah (innovation), which is the harbinger of shirk. Usually these creatures make man fall into that which is haraam, and bring only a little benefit.
Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “And verily, there were men among mankind who took shelter with the males among the jinn, but they (jinn) increased them (mankind) in sin and transgression” [al-Jinn 72:6] Hence the fatwas of the scholars state that it is haram to deal with the jinn at all – whether with the believers or the kaafirs among them – and it is essential not to take this matter lightly, so as to close the door to fitnah and confusion, and out of concern for those who have faith in Allaah.
Just as there are many different types of people, there are many types of jinn. Most people think when one is possessed by a jinni he/she must behave in a certain way; this is wrong and is a bad understanding of the reality of demonology. The influence of jinn on humans can be divided into a number of categories:
1. Presence of waswasah It is an overpowering form of possession which is tiring and stressful for the patient, making them cry, laugh and become angry without any real explanation. This type of presence of the jinn could last for hours, days or for the whole lifespan of the patient causing anxiety, stress, depression and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). This is very stressful for both the patient and their family.
2. Influence on the brain of the patient The jinni uses the brain to control the human senses, nervous system, muscles, and does not suffer too much from carrying the body of the patient. This may last for a few minutes, days or perhaps most of the person life. An example of this type of possession is ‘madness’.
3. Influenceon the mind of the patient (without possession) This type of possession is the same as the previous one (influence on the brain of the patient), but without possessing the body or the nervous system.
4. Influence on the patient’s body The jinni takes possession of one part of the patient’s body causing back pain, headache and may lead to loss of hearing or eyesight. This occurs whilst the patient is fully awake and may last for several days as the jinni can take possession of just one area of the body; as in the case of paralysis of the legs caused by jinn possession. It is more apparent when the person is receiving ruqyah or following the program.
5. The dual presence In this type of case, if you wish to speak to the patient or to the jinni you can do so. It is a very confusing experience for the Raqi, even more confusing for family members who do not believe or are in denial of jinn possession.
6. Full presence This type of possession is when a jinni takes full control of the person from head to toe.
Saying the basmallah is vital for Muslims before engaging in any act which could potentially harm or kill the jinn – bismillah is like an order – they have been warned, and so if any harms befalls upon them, it is what their own hands have earned. If a person says bismillah before an act the jinn can hear it, and they will not ignore it. It is very important for a person to say bismillah before doing these things mentioned. It gives the jinn a chance to get away. Allah swt has given humans the authority to wander the earth by His permission, so when they say bismillah the jinn must obey the command. The bismillah acts as a barrier between the human and jinn.
Jinn possession of a human is proven in the Qur’an and Sunnah, and by the consensus of Ahl al-Sunnah wa’l-Jamaa’ah and by the eyewitness. No one disputes this apart from the Mu’tazilah who give priority to their own rational analysis over the evidence of the Qur’aan and Sunnah. “Those who eat Ribaa will not stand (on the Day of Resurrection) except like the standing of a person beaten by Shaytaan (Satan) leading him to insanity. That is because they say: ‘Trading is only like Ribaa’…” [Al-Baqarah 2:275]
Al-Qurtubi said in his Tafseer (part 3, p. 355): “This ayah is proof that those people are wrong who deny that epilepsy is caused by the jinn and claim that its causes are only physical, and that the Shaytaan does not enter people or cause madness.” Ibn Katheer said in his Tafseer (part 1, p. 32), after mentioning the aayah quoted above: “They will not rise from their graves on the Day of Resurrection except like the way in which the epileptic rises during his seizure, when he is beaten by the Shaytaan. This is because they will rise in a very bad state. Ibn ‘Abbaas said: the one who consumes ribaa will rise on the Day of Resurrection crazy and choking.”
Ibn Taymiyah (Majmoo’ al-Fataawa, 42/276) said: “The fact that jinn can enter human bodies is proven by the consensus of Ahl al-Sunnah wa’l-Jamaa’ah. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): ‘those who eat Ribaa will not stand (on the Day of Resurrection) except like the standing of a person beaten by Shaytaan (Satan) leading him to insanity. That is because they say: ‘Trading is only like Ribaa’…’ [Al-Baqarah 2:275]. And in as-Saheeh it is narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: ‘The Shaytaan flows through the son of Adam as the blood flows through his veins.’”
‘Abd-Allaah ibn al-Imaam Ahmad ibn Hanbal said; “I said to my father, ‘There are some people who say that the jinn do not enter the body of the epileptic.’ He said: ‘O my son, they are lying; the jinn could speak through this person.’” Commenting on this, Ibn Qudaamah said: “What he said is well known, because a person may suffer an epileptic seizure and speak in a language that no one understands, and his body may be beaten with blows that would fell a camel, but the epileptic does not feel them at all, and he is also unaware of the words he is saying. The epileptic and others may be dragged about, or the carpet on which he is sitting may be pulled, and utensils may be moved about from place to place, and other things may happen. Anyone who witnesses such a thing will know for sure that the one who is speaking through the person and moving these things is not human.” And he said may Allaah have mercy on him: “There is no one among the imams of the Muslims who denies that jinn may enter the body of the epileptic and others. Anyone who denies that and claims that Islam denies it is lying about Islam. There is nothing in the proofs of sharee’ah to show that it does not happen.”
1. Regional possession (ta’ifa): i.e. “passing by, comes and goes (not permanent) Allah (SAW) mentions in the Qur’an about a regional touches by the devil in this verses
يقول الله تعالى في سورة الأعراف: } وَإِماّ يَنَزَغَنّكَ مِنَ الشّيْطَانِ نَزْغٌ فَاسْتَعِذْ بِاللّهِ إِنّهُ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ * إِنّ الّذِينَ اتّقَواْ إِذَا مَسّهُمْ طَائِفٌ مّنَالشّيْطَانِ تَذَكّرُواْ فَإِذَا هُم مّبْصِرُونَ{وقال تعالى في سورة قد أفلح المؤمنون :} ادْفَعْ بِالّتِي هِيَ أَحْسَنُ السّيّئَةَ نَحْنُ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا يَصِفُونَ * وَقُلْرّبّ أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِن ْ هَمَزَاتِ الشّياطِينِ * وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ رَبّ أَن يَحْضُرُون{وقال تعالى في سورة فصلت :} وَلاَ تَسْتَوِي الْحَسَنَةُ وَلاَ السّيّئَةُ ادْفَعْبِالّتِي هِيَ أَحْسَنُ فَإِذَا الّذِي بَيْنَكَ وَبَيْنَهُ عَدَاوَةٌ كَأَنّهُ وَلِيّ حَمِيمٌ * وَمَا يُلَقّاهَا إِلاّ الّذِينَ صَبَرُواْ وَمَا يُلَقّاهَآ إِلاّ ذُو حَظّ عَظِيمٍ * وَإِمّا يَنزَغَنّكَمِنَ الشّيْطَانِ نَزْغٌ فَاسْتَعِذْ بِاللّهِ إِنّهُ & nbsp;هُوَ السّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ {

Ibn Kathir in his Tafseer says: Allaah tells us about His pious servants who obey him as He ordered and left what is forbidden and if thing was to befall them from the touch of shaytan, epilepsy, anger, sadness, regret of sin, thinking of doing a sin and then they turn back to Him. The scholars have said that all these understanding of the verses that were mentioned above, are possible.
Regional possession: i.e. “passing by Is a type of possession that occurs as a seizure in ones sleep when one can’t breathe, move or speak. It happens so quick it could be just seconds or minutes, in some cases if not all the jinn does this form outside, usually it is a flying type jinn.
2. Projectory possession (aarid) A true type of possession that is passing by which take possession of a person for a specific time for hours during the day or night then leaves the body and comes back the next day, week, month, year or perhaps leaves the body and does not come back at all. May Allah keep them out. From research some patient feel the departure of the jinn leaving the body in the form of a sensation resembling that of a sudden shaking or shiver of one of the legs, or a strong air leaving through the mouth….etc., especially when the jinn knows that he/she will be recited on, he/she leave the body.
3. Accompanying possession (ikthiraan) Is a true type of possession that the jinn permanently takes possession of one part of the body such as the leg, womb, spine or it can take possession of the whole body, day and night when asleep or awake, it becomes as if it is a part of the body.
4. External possession (khariji) External possession is a type of possession where the jinn accompanies the person full time or part time. It is mentioned in a hadith in sahih Muslim narrated by Huthayfah, that when they sat down with the prophet (PBUH) to eat they will wait until the prophet started, a young girl was approaching the food as if she was getting pushed from an unknown force, as she reached out for the food the prophet (PBUH) grabbed her hand, the same happened to a Bedouin Arab, he reached his hand to grab the food, the prophet (PBUH) grabbed his hand too. The prophet (PBUH) said that the shaytan make lawful for themselves food that has not been mentioned the name of Allah. The jinn has the ability to take form of a human being or animal, that can have a physical touch on a person, or he can sit on a person’s back, causing heaviness, tightness of the chest, whispering, anger, or comes to a person when he is asleep and presses on a point in the brain to cause seizure. The shaytan can take form of an insect or animal and moves around the person’s body and clothing, causing scratches, bruises or blows in his face to frighten the person so that he/she can’t go to sleep, the jinn can take form of a beautiful woman/man to have sexual relationships with.
5.Transitus possession (mu’tadi) This type of possession is where more than one person is afflicted simultaneously by a single jinn mostly from the same relation of the one who is suffering. For one reason or another this is why it is called transitus (Meaning: to pass over or cross through). It could be one or more jinn that can be accompanied with a group (family, gang, clan, slaves or prisoners) in this possession. It could be an external attack, that’s why a person can go to a raqi but to no affect, because the jinn is in the wife/ husband / mother / friend ect….
6.Imaginary possession (wahmi) “This type is of delusion is the most dangerous and the most common”: Imaginary epilepsy is the result of mixing with those who are possessed, then starting to imagine oneself is afflicted with the same symptoms, or the healer suggests to the patient that he/she is afflicted. Perhaps this one of the ways the shayateen take advantage from the situation by taking authority over the mind to make him think that it is a fact that he is possessed, when reading on him/her the person will fall, scream and shout as if it is a jinn. Imaginary possession is the worst type of illness. It starts of with an idea then it becomes a belief leading to actions, which is all an autosuggestion. There is no cure for this but for the opposite of the real possession, sihr and ayn witchcraft, Allah has given us the cure (Ruqya).
7. False pretense Some patient who go back and fourth to the Raqi, with their own agenda and goals by coming attending the sessions when reading on them occurs they scream and shout saying I am here for such and such siher, but really the patient is not possessed or afflicted in anyway by any member the world of the unseen. This is a very dangerous situation for the person who’s acting and lying, the jinn may see this as a mockery to their world, it is possible they will attack and cause harm. All of this is to seek attention from others, or to have an excuse for their bad actions.
Reasons for Jinn Possession A jinn will accompany or possess a human being for various reasons which are as follows:
Revenge
Indirect Revenge
One who turns away from the remembrance of Allah
Lust
Sihr
Zaar
When the jinn possess a human for revenge it usually due to one of the following reasons
i) Pouring boiling water: Boiling water can cause harm to the jinn or even kill them. If a person for example pours boiling water in the bathroom or in the lavatory while cleaning, and does not say bismillah before they pour water, a jinn could be sleeping there, perhaps a baby, or a young jinn and they will be killed or harmed, and the family, or tribe of the jinn will want to take revenge.
ii) Urinating in places where jinn reside: The jinn reside in places where human beings do not frequently visit, and tend to take control of these areas and make them their homes. I have personally seen this happen where a brother came to me, I read roqya for him, and the jinn had explained that he had taken control of this person because of his actions in a park.
iii) Harming animals that have jinn in them: Jinn can take the form of animals/Jinn can live in animals, particularly black animals, and so if a person harms an animal, particularly at night, these can be jinn and they can harm you back. Avoid black cats and dogs, “…There are in Medina jinns who have accepted Islam, so when you see any one of them, pronounce a warning to it for three days, and if they appear before you after that, then kill it for that is a devil.” (Book #026, Hadith #5557)
iv)Shouting out loud, wailing, singing or reciting Qur’an in the toilet: This is something I have had experience with. A brother who came to me for roqya had been speaking to himself in the toilet. Slowly he went into conversation with the Shayateen, saying he was stronger than them, and that they couldn’t do anything to him. The Jinn possessed him, and he was to blame, because he was the one who told the jinn to present themselves.
v) Jumping from a high place without saying bismillah: If a person says bismillah before an act, the jinn can hear it, and they will not ignore it. Whereas there are some jinn that want to live a material life, and to be in a human and that’s when they enter them.
vii) Throwing stones or objects in the wilderness without saying bismillah: If a person throws something it can hit and can harm the jinn.
Symptoms of Jinn possession – Magic These symptoms have been divided into three categories:
1. Those which occur when one is awake, and Symptoms when one is awake:
1 – Turning away, in particular, from acts of worship and obedience, the remembrance of Allah (swt) (Dhikr) and reading the Qur’an. Allah (swt) says: And whosoever turns away blindly from the remembrance of the Most Gracious (Allah (swt) (i.e. this Qur’an and worship of Allah (swt), we appoint for him Shaytaan to be a Qarin (a companion) to him. And verily, they (Shayateen) hinder them from the path (of Allah (swt) but they think that they are guided aright – (Al-Zukhruf 43:36-37)
2 – Erratic behaviour in one’s words, deeds and movements. Allah (swt) says: (Those who eat Riba will not stand (on the Day of Resurrection) except like the standing of a person beaten by Shaytaan leading him to insanity.) (Al-Baqarah 2:275)
3 – Seizures (with no medical cause); there are signs to indicate that a seizure has devilish causes.
4 – Paralysis of a limb (with no medical cause).
5 – Being quick to get angry or weep with no apparent cause.
6 – Sitting in the toilet for a long time, and talking to oneself.
7 – Constant headache with no medical cause, which is not eased by painkillers.
8 – Irregular menstruation in women.
9 – Not producing children although both husband and wife are medically sound and able to reproduce.
10. Depression. – Depression refers to intense sadness. It is a widespread mental illness, indeed one of the most widespread. As for mild sadness or feeling “blue”, this is a normal and natural emotion which hardly anyone can escape, not even a believer. Allah (swt) says: Secret counsels (conspiracies) are only from Shaytaan, in order that he may cause grief to the believers. – (Al-Mujaddilah 58:10) If that sadness increases and takes over a person, it becomes depression.
Signs of depression:
Feeling distressed and sad
Loss of appetite
Lack of focus, forgetfulness
Sleep disturbances, weight loss
Lack of sexual desire
There are other signs when one is awake, but they may be caused by other life circumstances, such as not succeeding in efforts to get married, repeatedly failing to do so etc.
2. Those which occur when one is asleep
Symptoms when one is asleep:
1 – Frightening nightmares, which includes seeing various kinds of creatures such as ghosts or apparitions, seeing oneself falling from a high place, seeing people in strange forms, and snakes. A man may see awoman who wants him to have intercourse with her (and vice versa) constantly in his dreams, or he may see someone threatening him.
2 – Insomnia, anxiety and fear upon waking.
3 – Talking loudly in one’s sleep, or moaning and groaning. Note: A person should not be regarded as being possessed by Jinn if any of these symptoms occur. No one can be certain that a person has been possessed by Jinn until after the Qur’an has been recited over them, so these symptoms should not be taken as definitive evidence of Jinn possession.
3. Sudden behavioural changes that one may experience that are out of character.
3. Sudden behavioural change
Signs of sudden behavioural change that has to do with a person’s inward attitude. The below is a general guidline for all Muslims. However for practising Muslims who did not have these qualities before but find a sudden strange inclination to them, should get themselves checked with Ruqyah as soon as possible.
Associating others with Allah (swt) (Shirk) – Minor Shirk (showing off)
Being angry with the divine decree (like saying ‘why has this happened to me?’ etc)

Insomnia, anxiety and fear upon waking.
Talking loudly in one’s sleep, or moaning and groaning. Note: A person should not be regarded as being possessed by Jinn if any of these symptoms occur. No one can be certain that a person has been possessed by Jinn until after the Qur’an has been recited over them, so these symptoms should not be taken as definitive evidence of Jinn possession.
Verily symptoms of jinn possession and the signs changes from one person to another. sometimes the signs very clear and no doubt it is from shayateen (devils)
Most of the time the symptoms and the signs are very difficult for the one who is possessed to identify that he/she is such let alone those around him/her (i.e family and friends) particularly friends who have not known the individual prior to his/hers possession for example: a person has been possessed for ten years and he has a friend who he has known for five years clearly the person who is possessed has undergone a change in his character during that period of time, the friend who has only known him for five years would in no way see that because they became friends after that character alteration.
Some people would suffer from possession but they would not have the knowledge that they are possessed and this is from the symptoms of being possessed by a jinn for example a person might have have a persistent medically unexplained migraine but they would not know that it is a sign of jinn possession the individual would relate that migraine to everything else but to jinn possession. Other examples of what we have just mentioned include being sad for no reason, severe wiswasa ( whispering thoughts) not wanting to be in the house, an unusual love of solitude and dislike of being in the company of people, sleeplessness or insomnia and constantly being agitated.
Some possession can also be confused with other factual afflictions mentioned in the Quran and the sunnah primarily the eye (or what is generally called the evil eye in English) because one doesn’t necessarily have to be possessed to be afflicted with the eye you can be afflicted with the eye alone without the presence of a jinn attached to it, the same maybe said for sihrr (Magic) attachment to a jinn doesn’t always come when being afflicted with shirr. Being afflicted with the eye alone can make a man collapse to the ground without being possessed by a jinn the same maybe said for shirr affliction which can also render and human incapable of mobility without being possessed by a jinn which is the most common cause in respect of medically unexplained relevant conditions but that is a subject we will discuss another time as the subject of focus is jinn possession and its types.
Jinn possession can also be mistaken for a physical illness for the two have many striking similarities in appearance. We can also say the same for physiological and nerve disorders as jinn possession also bare striking resemblances to these two conditions a kind of camouflage on the part of the jinn if you will, which is the art of concealing something foreign in a natural environment undetectable by visual and conventional means and exposed only to the trained eye and by using specialised means in this case namely the Quran which also eliminates mistakes being made in the opposite direction.
Treatment for jinn possession doesn’t necessarily coincide comply with standard medical procedures treatment when it does work it only does so because the jinn would by playing a trick for example; we have mentioned that a persistant and unexplained migraine is a symptom of jinn possession. Person who is unaware that he/she is possessed and unaware of the symptoms would treat the persistant migraine with conventional medicines such as paracetamol the jinn within would then inturn cease in inflicting the migraine like pain once the paracetamol is taken only to carry on some hours later the reason being so that the individual its possessing can carry on taking the convential medicine in order for him/her to become reliant on it and think it’s nothing but a minor ailment which can be treated by such conventional medicines this being so that it would not occur to the individual that it is anything but that and the possibility of a jinn being the cause of this would not cross his or her mind. This is standard practice for a jinn to conceal itself in a human host make it appear as though it’s something else. A diversionary tactic if you will. this is a big statement to make in logical terms but if one were to look carefully and investigate you will find many serious examples of such, like a cancerous lump appearing in the womb of a woman who would intern have her womb removed because of the threat of terminal illness only for the lump to reappear some time later in the very same place of which medical professionals would have no explanation. This has been proven to be a trait of the jinn to cause such diversions this is not to say that all jinn have such ability to cause such tumours but some jinn do and can cause cancer.
If you recall the examples we have given from the other articles that we have mentioned if a jinn that is obsessed with a married woman and does not want her to bare any children with her husband it can cause corruption within her reproductive organs to stop conception by either squeezing the fallopian tubes or blocking the cervix to prevent sperm entering or by even attacking the male sperm and killing them or even causing a miscarriage if conception actually succeeds all these are actual signs of jinn possession.
What is ayn?
Al-'Ayn is an Arabic word (translated as the evil eye). It is often referred to when an individual harms another with his/her eye. An example is when an individual may like a thing in which his/her feelings of hatred or jealousy affect an individual by their repeated looking at the object. The evidence is as Allāh (SWT) commands His Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to seek refuge with Him from the envier (interpretation of the meaning): “And from the evil of the envier when he envies” [Qur'ān, 113:5]. However, it is necessary to understand any individual who imparts the evil eye on others is considered to be “envious”, whereas not every envier can place the evil eye on another. And Allāh (SWT) knows best
THE CONCEPT OF THE EVIL EYE (AYN)
A person who afflicts others by the evil eye is known as “Al-A’in” and a person affected by the evil eye is called “Al-Ma’yoon”. Ibn Al Qayyim (RA) said in his book Zaad al Ma’ad: “It is the arrow that is taken out from the soul of the envious individual, the one who causes the affliction of the evil eye, and then it is fired upon the subject of the evil eye. This individual can be affected sometimes and manage to escape it at other times. If one encounters this and is exposed to it then there will be no protection from its effect, however, it then becomes imperative if one encounters this to take care and prepare themselves with the best defense and not allow it to be implanted upon them. It is in this manner that a person can protect themselves from the envious individual and not be affected by them. Sometimes these arrows return to the one to whom they belong and this archery makes the envious individual feel the same negativity in his life as the negatively he tried to push on the subject.
Allah (SWT) says:
“And indeed, those who disbelieve would almost make you slip with their eyes when they hear the message and they say, "Indeed, he is mad.’” (Al-Qalam: 51)
Ibn Katheer (RA) uses this verse as evidence to show that the evil eye is real and that it can affect people since Allah (SWT) mentions ‘those who disbelieve would almost make you slip with their eyes when they hear the message’.
An incident which is narrated from the time of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ saw Quraish ask some people who were known to give the evil eye to another person which could cause illness, death or some other effect to put it on the Prophet ﷺ. However, Allah (SWT) protected the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ from those who were intent on destroying him with Ayn.
Ibnul Qayyim (RA) mentioned in his book Zaad al Ma’ad that some people have denied the effects of Ayn; he describes these people as arrogant with no knowledge.
According to some scholars, the concept of affecting a person with the evil eye (Ayn) can be likened to the effect of when a person walks into a room and they feel embarrassment or shyness due to people looking at them, perhaps causing the face to change color. Another example could be where someone sees someone they fear and they become pale in the face.
Ibnul Qayyim (RA) describes it as a physical or spiritual effect that leaves the eye and affects the human being.
THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF EVIL EYE (AYN)
There are different types of Evil eyes that a person can become afflicted with. They are:
(العين) Ayn - The eye from someone who may love or know you and not have evil intentions towards you.
(الحســـد) Hasad - The envious eye from someone who hates or dislikes you or something you have but wants it removed from you.
(النفس) Nafs - The admiring eye which a person can put on themself.
(النظرة) Nathara - The evil eye which comes from the Jinn.
Evidence for the different types of Evil Eye
Ayn
The Prophet ﷺ said: “The evil eye is real and if anything were to overtake Qadr (divine decree), it would have been the evil eye…”. This alludes to the speed of the evil eye and expresses that if anything was to overtake the decree of Allah it would have been the evil eye, i.e. in its speed.
Hasad
Iblees envied Adam (AS) as he disliked his creation and the fact he was ordered to prostate to him. He thought he was better because he was made from fire and Adam (AS) was created from clay. Therefore it was only envied that pushed iblees to transgress and disobey the order of Allah (SWT).
Nafs
The Prophet ﷺ “Whoever among you sees something in himself or his possessions or his brother that he likes, let him pray for blessings for it because the evil eye is real.”
Narrated by Ibn al-Sunni, Al-Haakim and classed as Saheeh by Al-Albaani 243.
Nathara
This originates from the evil eye of a Jinn. The evidence for this is the narration of Umm Salamah (RAA) who said the Prophet ﷺ saw in her house a slave girl with discoloration on her face so he said: “Perform Ruqya for her, for she has been afflicted by the eye of a Jinn.”
From the above, we see that the evil eye can be given by a human or by a Jinn. It is also known that animals can give the evil eye too when they look at something. There are many stories and encounters concerning this and Allah knows best.
EVIDENCE FOR THE EXISTENCE OF ENVY
Allah (SWT) says:
“Many of the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) wish if they could turn you away as disbelievers after you have believed out of envy from their selves, even after the truth has become manifest unto them (i.e that Muhammad ﷺ is Allah’s Messenger).” (Al-Baqarah: 109)
Allah (SWT) also says:
“Or do they envy people (i.e. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his followers) for what Allah has given them of His bounty? But we had already given the family of Ibraheem the Scripture and wisdom and conferred upon them a great kingdom (An-Nisa: 54)
Allah (SWT) also says: “And from the evil of the envier when he envies.” (Al-Falaq: 5)
THE SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE EVIL EYE AND ENVY
The Evil eye (in Arabic: Ayn, in Urdu: Nathara) is an illness that some people (not everyone) carry. It entails looking at a blessing which someone has within themselves or from that which they possess from worldly possessions with amazement or liking it. This then leads to dwelling on the matter, continually looking at the person who has the thing which he feels jealous towards and subsequently leading to an attack described as rays emitting from a person’s eyes (and their soul) and subsequently affecting him physically/ mentally causing him to become ill.
One doesn’t need to physically look at someone to give them the evil eye, even a blind person can give the evil eye. One can even give the evil eye merely by listening to the description of a person’s blessings. [Zaad Al Ma’ad: volume 4 page 149]
The evil eye is like an arrow that comes from the soul of the one who envies towards the one who is envied and on whom the evil eye is put; sometimes it hits him and sometimes it misses. If the target is exposed and unprotected it will affect him but if the target is cautious and armed the arrow will have no effect and may even come back on the one who launched it.
[Extracted from Zaad Al Ma’ad]
According to Shaykh Khalid Al-Hibshi (HA), it is something evil that comes out of the soul and then attacks the person.
Allah (SWT) himself commanded the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to seek refuge with Him from the envier. He (SWT) said (interpretation of the meaning):
“And from the evil of the envier when he envies.” (Al-Falaq: 5)
Allah (SWT) says in another verse (interpretation of the meaning):
“And verily those who disbelieve would almost make you slip with their eyes (through hatred).” (Al-Qalam: 51)
In a Hadith narrated from Abdullah ibn Abbas (RAA), it says, “A’odhu bi kalimaat-Illaah it-taamah min kulli shaytaanin wa haammah wa min kulli a’ynin laammah (I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah, from every devil and vermin and from every envious eye).” (Bukhari - 3191)
The meaning of “vermin” (haammah) is lethally poisonous animals and insects.
The meaning of “envious” (laammah) is that which causes harm because of jealousy (i.e hasad).
The word “Haasid” (envier) is more general in meaning than the word A’in (one who puts the evil eye on another).
The scholars disagreed over whether or not the evil eye is restricted only to jealousy, whilst agreeing that not every jealous person gives the evil eye. The difference of opinion follows:
1. One group said, "Everyone who gives the evil eye is jealous but not every jealous person gives the evil eye." This is the Fatwa of the Permanent Committee for Research and Ifta' in Saudi Arabia.
2. Another group said, "Not everyone who gives the evil eye is jealous, and not every jealous person gives the evil eye." This is the opinion of a group of scholars. The evidence for this is that Ayn can even be given to yourself, your children, and even when joking. The evidence for this comes from the following Hadith: “Whoever among you sees something in himself or his possessions or his brother that he likes, let him pray for blessings for it because the evil eye is real.” (Ibn al-Sunni in A’mal al-Yawm wal-Laylah, page 168; Al-Haakim, 4/216. Classed as Saheeh by al-Albaani in Al-Kalim at-Tayyib, page 243)
This Hadith explains that a person may harm himself, his wealth, his children, his wife, etc by the evil eye.
EVIDENCE IN THE QUR'AN
Allah (SWT) says:
“Many of the People of the Scripture wish they could turn you back to disbelief after you have believed, out of envy from themselves even after the truth has become clear to them. So pardon and overlook until Allah delivers His command. Indeed, Allah is above all things competent. (Al-Baqarah: 109)
“Or do they envy people for what Allah has given them of His bounty? But we had already given the family of Abraham the Scripture and wisdom and conferred upon them a great kingdom. (An-Nisa: 54)
“And from the evil of the envier when he envies.” (Al-Falaq: 5)
The Various steps leading to envy:
1. Enmity
2. Supremacy
3. Pride
4. Wonder
5. Fear
6. Love of authority
ENVY IS OF VARYING DEGREES
1 - A person wants the blessing to be taken away from his Muslim brother/ sister even if it does not come to him; rather he does not like Allah (SWT) to bless anyone else as that upsets him. This person may actively work to remove the bounty from another person without necessarily destroying the bounty itself. He may do this with his speech or actions and may do whatever it takes to bring an end to the blessing from the envied person.
2 – Where a person wants a blessing to be taken away from someone else because he hopes that it will come to him. This person does not just seek to remove that bounty from another person but also works to get the bounty for himself.
3 – Where he wishes for himself a blessing like that which someone else has without wanting it to be taken away from the other person. This is permissible and is not called hasad rather it is called “Ghibtah” (envy that is free from malice).
The worst are those who simply wish to destroy the bounty regardless of whether they themselves get it or if it is simply destroyed. They only want to destroy that blessing because it was not given to them in the first place. Then some cannot remove the feeling of envy from their souls. They cannot control it but they do not like it and they wish they could remove it from themselves. Those people, Allah willing, are not sinful for their state that they cannot control.
People who have Hasad sometimes don’t know that they have hate towards others. They are in denial of themselves but their actions and speech are obvious to others. Hasad needs to be rectified by a person looking into their soul. Umar (RAA) said, “Bring yourselves to account before you are brought to account. Don’t become superstitious or paranoid but get in touch with your soul and purify it as the soul is the doorway to your heart. The soul and heart are interconnected with each other, therefore if one is corrupted the other will be corrupted. The soul is like a child that wants to indulge in pleasure all the time. Your brain tells the soul what’s right and wrong. The heart feeds off whatever the soul indulges in and gets affected by whatever the brain tells it to do. Once a person taps into this then he becomes someone who is in control.
Hasad (destructive jealousy) causes a great deal of harm in this world and the Hereafter. Narrated from Az-Zubayr ibn al-A’waam (RAA), the Prophet ﷺ said: “There has come to you a disease of the nations before you, jealousy and hatred. This is the ‘shaver’ (destroyer); I do not say that it shaves hair but that it shaves (i.e destroys) faith. By the One in Whose Hand is my soul, you will not enter Paradise until you believe and you will not believe until you love one another. Shall I not tell you of that which will strengthen the love between you? Spread the greetings of peace amongst yourselves.” (Tirmidhi, 2434).
Concerning the meaning of the phrase “it shaves (destroys) faith”, At-Tayyibi (RA) said: “hatred takes away faith as a razor takes away hair.” (Tuhfat al-Ahwadhi bi Sharh Jaami’ al-Tirmidhi)
Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah said in his book Amraad al-Quloob (diseases of the heart):
“Whoever finds in himself any hasad towards another has to try to neutralize it by means of attaining taqwa (piety, consciousness of Allah) and Sabr (patience). He should hate that the feeling of hasad is in himself… But the one who does wrong to his brother by word or deed will be punished for that. However, the one who fears Allah (SWT) and is patient is not included amongst the wrongdoers and Allah (SWT) will benefit him by his taqwa.” Nobody is free from hasad, but the noble person hides it whilst the base person shows it.” A person will not be brought to account for whatever crosses his mind but he will be brought to account for what he says and does. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Allah will forgive my nation for their mistakes, what they forget and what they are forced to do (through coercion).” (Bukhari - 2033)
The envious that doesn’t try to remove the envy from his own heart, there is a difference of opinion whether this type of person is sinful or not.
According to Ibn Rajab (RA), those that remove hasad from their hearts, pray for the person whom they have hasad towards and tell others of their goodness, they remove the hasad so much so they begin to love the person and love that Allah (SWT) has bestowed them with this bounty. These people are amongst the highest level of faith as they love for their brother what they love for themselves and this is what everyone should strive for.
AHADEETH RELATED TO THE EVIL EYE
The Prophet ﷺ said: “The evil eye is real and if anything were to overtake Qadr (divine decree), it would have been the evil eye…”. This alludes to the speed of the evil eye and expresses that if anything was to overtake the decree of Allah it would have been the evil eye, i.e. in its speed.
Narrated from Abdullah Ibn Abbas (RAA), he said the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The evil eye is real and can bring down a person from a high mountain.” (Sahih al Jami’ 4146). What is meant here is that the evil eye follows a person by Allah’s will until it causes him to fall from a mountain. Another understanding is that Ayn is so powerful it could bring down the highest mountain. We must therefore really consider the effects it can have on the human body.
Narrated from Sahl ibn Haneef (RAA) that the Prophet ﷺ came out and traveled with him towards Makkah until they were in the mountain pass of Al-Kharar in Al-Jahfah. There Sahl ibn Haneef did ghusl (bathed), and he was a handsome white-skinned man with beautiful skin. Amir ibn Rabee’ah, one of Banu Adiyy ibn K’ab looked at him whilst he was doing ghusl and said, “I have never seen such skin as beautiful as this, not even the skin of a virgin,” upon those words Sahl fell to the ground. They went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, “O Messenger of Allah, can you do anything for Sahl because by Allah he cannot raise his head.” He said, “Do you accuse anyone with regard to him?” They said, “‘Amir ibn Rabee’ah looked at him.” So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called Amir and rebuked him strongly. He said, “Why would one of you kill his brother? If you see something that you like, then pray for blessings for him.” Then he said to him, “Wash yourself for him.” So he washed his face, hands, forearms, knees, and the sides of his feet, and inside his izaar (lower garment) in the vessel. Then that water was poured over him (i.e. Sahl) and a man poured it over his head and back from behind. He did that to him then Sahl got up and joined the people and there was nothing wrong with him. Ahmad, Malik, An-Nasai’ and Ibn Hibban. Classed as Saheeh (authentic) by al-Albani in Al-Mishkat.
In another narration, the Prophet ﷺ came out and traveled towards Makkah, until they were in the mountain pass of Al-Kharaar in al-Jahfah. There Sahl ibn Haneef did ghusl, and he was a handsome white-skinned man with beautiful skin. Aamir ibn Rabee’ah, one of Banu Adiyy ibn Ka’b looked at him whilst he was doing ghusl and said: “I have never seen such beautiful skin as this, not even the skin of a virgin,” thereupon Sahl fell to the ground. They went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, “O Messenger of Allah, can you do anything for Sahl because by Allah he cannot raise his head.” He said, “Do you accuse anyone with regard to him?” They said, “Aamir ibn Rabee’ah looked at him.” So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called Aamir and rebuked him strongly. He said, “Why would one of you kill his brother? If you see something that you like, then pray for blessings for him (saying TabarakAllah). Then he said to him, “Wash yourself for him.” So he (Aamir) washed his face, hands, forearms, knees, and the sides of his feet and inside his izaar (lower garment) in the vessel. Then that water was poured over him (Sahl, and a man poured it over his head and back from behind. He did that to him then Sahl got up and joined the people, after which there was nothing wrong with him.
Narrated from Abdullah ibn Abbas (RAA), Allah’s Messenger ﷺ said: “The influence of the evil eye is a fact. If anything were to precede the divine decree it would have been the influence of an evil eye. Therefore when you are asked to take a bath (as a cure) from the influence of the evil eye, you should take a bath.’ (Sahih Muslim Hadith 5427) Therefore the person who has been afflicted by Ayn should try to get the water of the person who has afflicted him and bathes with it.
Narrated Umm Salamah (RAA), the Prophet ﷺ once saw a young girl who had a certain expression on her face, so he said “Seek an Islamic formula for her because she is touched by the evil eye.” (Bukhari)
THE EFFECTS OF THE EVIL EYE
Sheikh Khalid Al-Hibshi (HA) says that Ayn has a tremendous amount of power. It has an influence in all areas of a person’s life, whether religious affairs, worldly affairs, moral characteristics, etc. Some of the effects are summarised below:
§ Effect on the minds: IQ, wit, memory, ability to focus, understanding, and assimilation.

EVIDENCE FROM THE SUNNAH
Narrated from the freed slave of Az-Zubayr (RAA), he said the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:” The disease of the nations who came before you have started to spread amongst you; jealousy and hatred. This is the ‘shaver’ (destroyer). I do not say that it shaves hair but rather that it shaves (destroys) faith. By the One in Whose Hand is my soul, you will not enter Paradise until you believe and you will not believe until you love one another. Shall I not tell you of that which will strengthen the love between you? Spread the greetings of peace amongst yourselves.” (Tirmidhi)
Narrated by Abu Hurairah (RAA) said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “My nation will be stricken with the disease of the other nations.” They said: “What is the disease of the other nations?” He ﷺ said: “Insolence, arrogance, accumulation of wealth, competition in worldly gains, mutual hatred and envy until there will be wrongdoing and then killing.”

SELF-RUQYA TREATMENT
Narrated from Abdullah Ibn Abbas (RAA) that the Prophet ﷺ said: “The evil eye is real and if anything were to overtake the divine decree it would have been the evil eye. When you are asked to take a bath (to provide a cure) from the influence of the evil eye, you should take a bath.” (Muslim, Ahmad, and Tirmidhi) - Bath for Ayn
The Sunnah method is to wash from the water of the wudhu of the person who gave you the ayn if the identity of the person is known. If you don’t know who gave the ayn or their water is not available then wash with water that is recited on called Ruqya water as many times a day as possible; 3-4 times is good.
Narrated Aisha (RAA), she said the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to tell me to recite Ruqya for protection against the evil eye. (Bukhari and Muslim)
Recite Surat Al-Baqarah daily; minimum once but more if possible. For those of us that struggle with the recitation itself or with difficulty completing the recitation during one session, it is advised to listen to the audio recitation and put your finger on the words of the Mushaf as your following the recitation.
Recite Ayat ul Kursi, Surah Al-Falaq, and An-Naas throughout the day while doing chores, shopping, etc
Recite verses of Ayn,
If you were reading and/or memorizing Qur’an before you were afflicted, then continue to read/ or memorize the same amount of Juz with the intention of Ruqya, in addition to above
If the Ayn is related to education, then add Al Ilm audio. Signs of this are you don’t want to pick up the books etc
Daily Adhkar is very important
There is nothing wrong with treating different diseases and ailments that befall a person so long as this doesn’t cause side effects. This includes anything whether it is Mental, Spiritual, Financial, Physical, Social, etc. It is incumbent that a Muslim hasten first of all to treat the problem with Ruqya as prescribed in the Shariah. This is inclusive of verses from the Qur'an, Authentic supplications from the Ahadeeth of the Prophet ﷺ which are recommended in Shariah and in which the texts state there is healing.
There is nothing wrong with seeking cure with natural materials likewise which Allah (SWT) has created such as Honey, Black Seed, Olive oil and other things which are known for their remedial benefits which Allah (SWT) has created for us to benefit from. There are many methods of treatment and different types of cure but we understand that chemical remedies are not the answer.
A person suffering from things such as depression, anxiety, and so on should hasten to increase their faith and their trust in Allah (SWT). He should increase in his supplications and his prayers. If he does that, his anxiety will be removed. Seeking to relax through doing acts of worship has a great effect on the soul and in dispelling many types of psychological ailments. Usually, a person would visit a psychologist whose beliefs are corrupt in Allah (SWT), let alone one who is a Kaafir. The more the doctor knows about Allah (SWT) and His religion, the better the advice he can give to his patient.
Allah (SWT) says: “Whosoever works righteousness, whether male or female, while he is a true believer, verily to him We will give a good life and We shall certainly pay them a reward in proportion to the best of what they used to do (i.e. Paradise)” (An-Nahl: 97)
It was narrated that Suhayb (RAA) said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “How wonderful is the affair of the believer; for all of his affairs are good, and this applies to no one except the believer. If something good happens to him, he gives thanks and that is good for him; and if something bad happens to him, he bears it with patience and that is good for him.” (Muslim - 2999)
It is important to understand that this world should not be the main concern for Muslims. Worrying about his provisions should not find any room in his heart or mind lest that make his sickness and anxieties worse. Narrated from Anas (RAA), the Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever is concerned mainly about the Hereafter, Allah (SWT) will make him feel independent of others and will make him focused and content, and his worldly affairs will fall into place. But whoever is concerned mainly with this world, Allah (SWT) will make him feel in constant need of others and will make him distracted and unfocused, and he will get nothing of this world except what was decreed for him.” (Tirmidhi – 2389, classed as Saheeh by Al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami - 6510).
Ibn al-Qayyim (RA) said: “When a person spends his entire day with no other concern but Allah (SWT) alone, Allah (SWT) will take care of all his needs and take care of all that which is worrying him. He will empty his heart so that it will be filled only with love for Him, free his tongue so that it will speak only in remembrance of Him (dhikr), and cause all his faculties to work only in obedience to Him. However, if a person spends his entire day with no other concern but this world, Allah (SWT) will make him bear its distress, anxiety, and pain. He will leave him to sort himself out and cause his heart to be distracted from the love of Allah (SWT) towards the love of some created being, cause his tongue to speak only in remembering people instead of remembering Him, and cause him to use his talents and energy in obeying and serving them. So he will strive hard, laboring like some work-animal to serve something other than Allah. Everyone who turns away from being a true slave of Allah and obeying Him and loving Him will be burdened with servitude, love, and obedience to some created being. Allah (SWT) says: “And whosoever turns away (i.e blinds himself) from the remembrance of the Most Beneficent, We appoint for him a Shaytaan to be a Qareen (intimate companion) to him.” (Az-Zukhruf: 36) [Al-Fawaa’id, p. 159]
Can a believer become mentally ill? What is the treatment for that according to the Shari'ah? Please note that modern medicine treats these illnesses with modern medicines only.
Undoubtedly a person may suffer from psychological or mental diseases, such as anxiety about the future and regret for the past. Psychological diseases affect the body more than physical diseases affect it. Treating these diseases through the things prescribed in Shariah (i.e Ruqya) is more effective than treating them with physical medicines, as is well known. One of the means of treating them is mentioned in the Sahih Hadeeth from Abdullah ibn Mas’ood (RAA), wherein the Prophet: “There is no-one who is afflicted by distress and grief, and says: ‘Allaahumma inni ‘abduka ibn ‘abdika ibn amatika naasiyati bi yadik, maada fiyya hukmuk, ‘adlun fiyya qadaa’uk. As’aluka bi kulli ismin huwa lak, sammayta bihi nafsak, aw anzaltahu fi kitaabik, aw ‘allamtahu ahadan min khalqik, aw ista’tharta bihi fi ‘ilm il-ghayb ‘indak, an taj’al al-Qur’aana rabee’ qalbi, wa noora sadri, wa jalaa’ huzni wa dhihaab hammi. (O Allah, I am Your slave, son of Your slave, son of Your maidservant; my forelock is in Your hand, Your command over me is forever executed and Your decree over me is just. I ask You by every name belonging to You which You have named Yourself with, or revealed in Your Book, or You taught to any of Your creation, or You have preserved in the knowledge of the Unseen with You, that You make the Qur’an the life of my heart and the light of my breast, and a departure for my sorrow and a release for my anxiety),’ but Allah will take away his distress and grief, and replace it with joy.” This is one of the remedies prescribed in Shariah.
One can also say “Laa ilaaha illa Anta, Subhaanaka inni kuntu min adh-dhaalimeen (none has the right to be worshipped but You, Glorified and Exalted be You above all the evil they associate with You! Truly, I have been of the wrongdoers)” [Al-Anbiyah: 87]
Whoever wants to know more than that should refer to what the scholars have written about dhikr, such as al-Waabil al-Sayyib by ibn Al-Qayyim, Al-Kalim at-Tayyib by Shaykh Al-Islam ibn Taymiyyah, al-Adhkaar by An-Nawawi, Zaad al-Ma’aad by ibn al-Qayyim.
However because people’s faith is weak nowadays, they are less receptive to the remedies prescribed in Shariah. You find nowadays people have started to rely on physical medicines more than on the remedies prescribed in Shariah. But when a person’s faith is strong, the remedies prescribed in Shariah are completely effective and may work faster than physical medicine. We all know about the story of the man whom the Prophet () sent on a campaign and he camped near some Arab people but those people near whom he camped showed him no hospitality at all. Allah (SWT) willed that their leader should be stung by a scorpion and they said to one another, “Go to those people who have camped nearby, perhaps you will find a Raaqi (one who can recite Ruqya) with them.” The Sahaabah said to them, “We will not recite Ruqya for your leader unless you give us such and such many sheep.” They said, “Fine.” So one of the Sahaabah went and recited Ruqya for the one who had been stung. He only recited Surat al-Faatihah throughout and the one who had been stung got up as if released from a chain.
Reciting al-Faatihah had such an effect on this man because it came from a heart that was filled with faith. The Prophet ﷺ asked him, “How did you come to know that it (i.e Surat al-Faatihah) could be recited as a Ruqya?”
But in these times when religious commitment and faith have become weak, people have started to rely on external physical medicines and as a result, they are suffering.
But on the other hand, some charlatans play with people’s minds; they are clever and able to trick people, claiming that they are good reciters of Ruqya when in fact they are consuming people’s wealth unlawfully. Therefore you find people are caught between two extremes; one extreme is those who think that Ruqya has no effect at all and the other is those tricksters who play with people’s minds by reciting false and deceitful readings. [Fataawa Islamiyyah, 4/465, 466]
We ask Allah (SWT) to protect us from all types of anxiety and worries and to open our hearts to faith, guidance, and tranquility.
Ruqya in Islam is the recitation of the Qur’an, the use of authentic supplications, and the seeking of refuge in Allah (SWT) using His Perfect Names and Attributes. All of these are means of treatment for a person suffering from ailments such as the Evil Eye, Envy, Jinn possession, Black Magic, or other ailments such as fever, depression, cancer, etc.
There are 2 types of Ruqya:
Ruqya Shar'iyyah
Ruqya Shirk'iyyah
This is Ruqya that is free from any forms of shirk (associating partners with Allah) and revolves around the recitation of the Qur’an, the use of authentic supplications, and the seeking of assistance and refuge in Allaah (SWT) alone. Ruqya Shar'iyyah should meet 3 conditions as mentioned by the scholars, and it is from their consensus that the legalization of Ruqya is achieved when the 3 conditions are met. They are:
It must be with the words of Allah (Qur’an), his names, and his attributes.
It must be in the Arabic language or a language that is clearly understood by the people.
To believe that the Ruqya being done has no benefit by itself, but the benefits and cure are from Allaah alone.
**PLEASE NOTE**
These conditions can be found in ‘Fath Al-Bari’ and in the sayings of Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah concerning healing the one who is possessed.
Evidence can be found in the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ in regards to Ruqya being allowed; this is encouraged in the following Hadith:
Awf Ibn Malik al-Ashja’i (RAA) narrated that he said to the Prophet ﷺ: “O Allah’s Messenger! We used to do Ruqya during the days of Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic era). What do you think of that?” He ﷺ replied: "Present your Ruqya to me; there is nothing wrong with it as long as it does not involve Shirk." (Sahih Muslim)
Therefore, Ruqya Shar'iyyah is permissible and legal in Islam.
This type of Ruqya leads to sin and destruction upon the individual as it involves calling upon other than Allah (SWT). It entails seeking assistance from the Jinn, Magicians, Horoscopes, Charms & Amulets, etc. Therefore, it is clear that its practice is completely forbidden in Islam, which is evident from the above Hadeeth of the Prophet ﷺ.
The scholars mention that Ruqya is not a practice that can only be performed by a particular individual or individuals, rather anyone can perform Ruqya to themselves or others. It is possible that a man can do Ruqya to a woman and a wife can do Ruqya to her husband and there is no doubt that piety brings about goodness. Allah (SWT) says in the Qur'an: “Verily, Allah accepts from the Muttaqeen” (Al-Ma’edah: 27)
Question put to Shaykh Abdel-Aziz Ibn Baaz (RA)
Q. There was a debate about those who read Qur’an to treat people with Ruqya. Some people said that it is not permissible for ordinary people to use the Qur’an to treat people with Ruqya. That this should only be done by those who are well-versed in the knowledge of the Shariah. Others said that it is sufficient for the one who wants to perform Ruqya to have memorized the Book of Allaah, to have a sound belief, to be righteous, and to have Taqwa of Allah. I hope that you can dispel our confusion on this matter and give us the Shar’i ruling.
A. The correct view is that it is permissible for every reader who can recite the Qur’an well, understands its meanings, has a sound belief, does righteous deeds, and is of upright conduct to perform Ruqya. It is not essential for him to have knowledge of minor matters or to have studied all branches of knowledge in depth. This is because of the story of Abu Sa’eed and the man who had been stung by a scorpion, “… and we did not know that he ever did Ruqya before that incident,” as is stated in the Hadeeth. (Bukhari & Muslim).
The Raaqi must have a good intention and want to benefit the Muslims. He should not be concerned with money or payment so that his reading will be more beneficial. And Allaah knows best. [Al-Lu’lu’ al-Makeen min Fataawaa Ibn Jibreen, p. 22]
Sincerity of intention
All learning and actions should be done for the sake of Allah alone and in accordance with the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ. It is narrated on the authority of Amir ul-Mu’mineen, Abu Hafs, Umar ibn al-Khattab (RAA), that he said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: “Actions are according to their intentions, and everyone will get that which he intended. Whosoever migrates with an intention for Allah and His Messenger, then his migration will be for the sake of Allah and his Messenger. Whoever migrates for a worldly gain or to marry a woman, then his migration will be for the sake of whatever he migrated for.” (Bukhari & Muslim)
Narrated by the Mother of the Believers, Aisha (RAA), who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "He who innovates something in this matter of ours [Islam] which is not from it, will have it rejected [by Allah]. (Bukhari)
Knowledge is of 2 types:
Islamic knowledge which includes knowledge of Tawheed, knowledge of what is Halal and Haram, knowledge of the next life, and so on
Worldly knowledge such as knowledge of people and their different natures and other branches of knowledge connected to this worldly life.
The one who wishes to treat others must have these two types of knowledge. He must also have experience which qualifies him to treat people. This includes knowledge of the jinn and devils and their ways, knowledge of how to deal with them, and knowledge of the patient and their relationship with Allah (SWT). The one who wishes to treat others must also be aware and pious both outwardly and inwardly. He should be regular in his performance of acts of worship and should strive to increase by offering the recommended acts of worship as well when possible. All this annoys and overpowers Shayateen.
Mental illnesses are similar to the illnesses caused by Jinn possession which causes some people to confuse the issue of mental illness with illnesses caused by the Jinn, Evil eye, or witchcraft. it is therefore important to be able to differentiate between the two.
In the case where sickness is caused by the Jinn, as is the case of any kind of medical ailment, it is essential to diagnose the problem by finding out what caused it. Once the practitioner becomes aware of the reason(s) for which the person is suffering from the ailment, only then can he begin to treat the patient. If the patient was affected because of witchcraft, the practitioner will offer a remedy that tackles witchcraft. If the sickness was caused by the evil eye, he will use a remedy that deals with the evil eye and so on. In each case, he will use the appropriate treatment required.
Below is a general overview of some of the points a Raqi should find answers to when diagnosing a person:
The type of ailment the person is suffering from.
When this sickness or problem began.
From any dreams experienced by the patient, the practitioner may be able to diagnose the cause of the problem. This will help shed light on whether the affliction was caused as an act of revenge, a case of love, or caused by witchcraft, etc.
Does the patient feel unable to remember Allah, read Qur’an or listen to the Qur’an?
Does the patient get sleepy or drowsy? If so, what times?
Does the patient feel pain moving through their body or any numbness in the private areas?
Does the patient feel that they want to cry for no reason?
Does the patient feel extreme tightness in the chest?
Does the patient experience continual headaches which are not relieved by painkillers?
Are there menstrual irregularities in women?
These are some of the important questions which need to be addressed when seeking to diagnose a person.
