About SSIV

SSIV in Short

The International Workshop on Safety and Security Intelligent Vehicle (SSIV) is being promoted since 2014 as part of the IEEE/IFIP International Conference on Dependable Systems and Networks (DSN), aiming to explore the interdependencies between safety and security of aerial and ground vehicles, as well as mobile robot systems, that emerge when networked, autonomous and cooperative functionalities are introduced.

The success of each edition of SSIV has guaranteed for the 10th time the co-location of the workshop with DSN, the most important international scientific conference on dependable computer systems.

This workshop also led to the publication, in 2017, of a Special Issue in the IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Magazine, resulting from of an open call, to where some authors from the Workshop were invited to submit revised and extended versions of their papers.

Workshop Format

The workshop program will include:

Past Editions

The first edition of SSIV 2015 took place during DSN 2015, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This workshop had submissions from 8 different countries. After a blind peer review process, 9 papers were accepted (5 full papers and 4 short papers). The workshop sessions included two keynote speeches, by Roberto Gallo and Paulo Veríssimo, and a panel, chaired by Johan Karlsson, with the participation of both keynote speakers and Andrea Bondavalli

This workshop provided the motivation for the publication of an IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Magazine - Special Issue on Safety and Security of Intelligent Vehicles, with an open call and a rigorous peer review process. This Special Issue was published in the Spring of 2017.

The second edition of SSIV 2016 took place during DSN 2016, in Toulouse, France. 6 papers were accepted (5 full papers and 1 short paper), and the workshop included two keynote speeches, by Phill Koopman and Nicolas Larrieu, and a panel, chaired by Marco Vieira, with the participation of both keynote speakers and Hermann Kopetz

The third edition of SSIV 2017 took place during DSN 2017, in Denver, Colorado, USA. In this edition 6 papers were accepted as full papers. The workshop included two keynote speeches, by Kimon Valavanis, Director of Unmanned Systems Research Institute of the University of Denver, and Mohamed Kaâniche, Research Director at CNRS and Professor at the Toulouse Institute of Technology. The panel, chaired by Paulo Veríssimo, had the participation of both keynote speakers and Marco Vieira

The fourth edition of SSIV 2018 took place during DSN 2018, in Luxembourg. For this workshop, 8 papers were accepted (6 full papers and 2 short papers). This workshop included a keynote speech by Philipe Quéré, cybersecurity expert at Renault, about the progress and possibilities of concrete links between functional safety and cybersecurity. This time there was a joint panel with Dependable and Secure Machine Learning (DSML) workshop, chaired by Doug Blough (Georgia Institute of Technology) featuring Philippe Quéré (Renault), Nirmal R. Saxena (Nvidia), and Johan Karlsson (Chalmers University), with the theme “How will we able to trust self-driving cars”.

The fifth edition of SSIV 2019 took place during DSN’2019, in Portland,USA. For this workshop, 8 papers have been submitted and 5 papers were accepted. This workshop included a keynote speech by Vance Hildermann, CEO AFuzion Inc., about new trends in Safety-Critical software, and a keynote speech by Jean-Charles Fabre, LAAS-CNRS, Univ .de Toulouse, France, about open issues in Resilient Computing. In addition to the keynote speakers, the joint panel, chaired by Henrique Madeira (Universidade de Coimbra) featured Jay Lala (Raytheon). The main topic was “Future challenges in Safety and Security of Intelligent Vehicle”.

The sixth edition of SSIV 2020 took place during DSN’2020. For this workshop, 9 papers have been submitted and 8 papers were accepted. Due to the Covid-19 situation, the organization switched to a virtual conference and time restrictions were imposed. Thus the presentations were shortened and we didn’t plan a keynote address. However, we managed to keep an interesting panel about the future challenges in Safety and Security of Intelligent Vehicles, at the end of the day. The panel was chaired by Mario Trapp (Fraunhofer IKS, Germany) and featured Sibin Mohan (University of Illinois, USA), Miriam Gruber (BMW, Germany), and Behrooz Sangchoolie (RISE, Sweden).

The seventh edition of SSIV 2021 took place during DSN’2021. For this workshop, 12 papers have been submitted and 8 papers were accepted. Due to the Covid-19 situation, the workshop was virtual and time restrictions were imposed. Thus the presentations were shortened and we didn’t have a keynote. However, we managed to keep an interesting panel about the future challenges in Safety and Security of Intelligent Vehicles, at the end of the day. The panel was chaired by Jean-Charles Fabre (LAAS-CNRS, INP-Toulouse, France) and featured David Espes (Univ. Bretagne Occidentale, France), Márjory da Costa-Abreu (Sheffield, Hallam University, UK), and Jelena Frtunikj (Agro AI, Germany).

The eighth edition of SSIV 2022 took place during DSN'2022, in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. For this workshop, 5 papers were submitted and 4 papers were accepted and presented. This workshop included a keynote speech by Wilfried Steiner, from Vienna University of Technology and TTTech Labs, Vienna, Austria, entitled "A Formal Methodology for the Analysis of Autonomous Driving Systems". A joint panel, chaired by Paulo Veríssimo (from King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, Thuwal, Saudi Arabia), featured the keynote speaker, Marcello Cinque (Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II, Naples, Italy) and Saurabh Jha (IBM Research, New York, USA).

The 9th edition of SSIV 2023 took place during the DSN'2023. For this workshop, 16 papers were submitted and 12 papers were accepted and presented. This workshop included a keynote speech by Gernot Heiser, from UNSW Sydney, Australia, entitled " Intelligent Vehicle Security and Safety Needs a Verified Operating System". In addition to the keynote speaker, a joint panel, chaired by Ralf Graefe (Intel, Germany), featured Gernot Heiser (UNSW Sydney, Australia), Marcus Völp (CritiX, Université du Luxembourg) and João Esteves (Critical Techworks, Portugal).
