Antimicrobial Research at Illinois College
Welcome to the Knapp Laboratory at Illinois College. Resistance to antibiotics is a growing problem, and finding new compounds to treat microbial infections is desperately needed. One approach our lab takes is to focus on bioprospecting - finding new sources of organisms that could produce novel compounds. We work both in the field and the laboratory to isolate organisms with the potential to inhibit bacterial growth.
The Knapp laboratory is run by Dr. Gwen Knapp, Ph.D. She has a B.S. in Molecular Biology from Purdue University and her Ph.D. is in Biochemistry from Texas A&M University, where she studied protein-protein interactions. Her postdoctoral studies were at Wadsworth Center, where she had an NRSA F32 fellowship to study gene expression in Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Dr. Knapp teaches genetics, microbiology, immunology, and virology. Students from her laboratory have gone on to SIU Medical School, U of Illinois Veterinary School, and U of Minnesota Graduate School, amongst others.Â
