Students will be assigned homework daily to be turned in the following day. For homework, students will be assigned practice problems from their workbook and expected to complete these problems neatly with all work shown on loose leaf paper (not in their workbook).
With the increase of AI and other websites offering math solutions, homework will be weighted as seen above as 25% of students' final grades. This allows me to give students credit for completing their homework but also holds students accountable for being able to solve problems without the aid of technology on tests, quizzes, and in class problem sets.
All homework assignments will be able to be corrected before the end of the corresponding unit. Thus, all students will be able to earn a 100% on each assignment if they take the time to correct their initial work.
Quiz questions will be taken mainly from previous homework problems students have been assigned as a way of promoting students to take time to work through their homework, as opposed to looking up solutions, and encourage them to seek help from me if they are not understanding. Quizzes will be used for short understanding checks (to be completed in around 5-10 minutes), and students will be given prior notice before any quiz. No pop quizzes!
Tests will be given at the end of each unit as seen in students’ workbooks. Students will be given at least five days notice before any test, and an in-class review day will always be provided before the test.
Within the grading category of in class work, I will take into account student participation. The goal is for this to be a discussion based course where students feel comfortable sharing their problem solving methods along with their confusion. I understand that students are not always comfortable in math, but this will be a classroom environment where mistakes are welcome to help us learn.
As far as in class work, students will be provided with short problem sets, exit tickets, or whiteboard work to complete either individually or in small groups. This will be an opportunity for peer collaboration to solidify understanding of the standards and concepts we are covering.
Lastly, each semester, students will be assigned a project to work on. The project will be announced in September of the fall semester and February of the spring semester.
