Martin Hale, MB ChB, LRCP(Edin), LRCS(Edin), LRCP&S(Glas), FC Path,  is a specialist anatomical pathologist who has spent his entire career working in the public sector both in Zimbabwe and South Africa. He has extensive experience in diseases that are prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly infectious disease and malignancy, inclusive of HIV. He has an interest in HIV related malignancy, and the interplay between co-infection with HIV and other infections. In recent years he has also headed up the histopathology support to the liver transplant unit which is now the largest of its kind on the African continent.

In addition to his current role as President of the IAP, Martin is fully committed to the development of pathology in sub-Saharan Africa.  A significant milestone of his work included successful bid preparation and subsequent hosting of the International Congress of the International Academy of Pathology in Cape Town, South Africa in 2012, a first for the African continent. This was an overwhelming success with over 330 delegates from Africa attending, 150 of them being supported by bursaries sourced through the IAP. This was followed by him convening the first Congress of the African Assembly in 2019.

He has been involved with a number of collaborative research projects over the years including projects that have been funded by prestigious funding agencies, has presented at numerous international meetings, authored and co-authored peer reviewed publications and book chapters and has supervised a number of post-graduate students.
