What is Project ACES?
Project ACES (All Children Exercise Simultaneously) was created by physical education teacher Len Saunders in 1989 as a method of motivating children to exercise. It has been called "the world's largest exercise class" by the media, and millions of children across the world have participated in this event over the past 36 years.
When is Project ACES 2025?
Project ACES takes place each year at 10:00 a.m. on the first Wednesday in May as part of National Physical Fitness and Sports Month and National Physical Education Week. The purpose is to promote good health and fitness habits. May 7, 2025, marks the 37th year for Project ACES. A majority of schools will participate in Project ACES at 10:00 a.m. that day, but this can be flexible if the weather, testing, or other conflicts prevent you from participating then. We like to say, “It’s 10:00 somewhere,” so adapt to make it work for your school. What's most important is that students feel connected to being a part of "the world's largest exercise class," they are reminded of some of the benefits of exercise and the importance of lifelong fitness, and everyone in the school community has fun moving together.
How do I organize a Project ACES event?
A Project ACES event does not need to be complicated or a lot of work for the PE teacher. There's no set routine. The event should last 15-45 minutes and begin at 10:00 a.m., if possible. It should consist of simple and fun activities that encourage students and staff to exercise together. Be creative! Some schools play music over the loudspeaker, and everyone stops what they’re doing to dance for 15 minutes. At others, everyone heads outside to walk or run together. Additional ideas include yoga, calisthenics, brainbreak videos, jumping rope, hula hooping, doing a playground obstacle course, or an outdoor scavenger hunt. The sky is the limit! Consider inviting special guests like school board members, local firefighters, police officers, military personnel, politicians, celebrities, or the media to promote your program in the community and make the event even more exciting. If you're planning an outdoor event, make sure to have a backup plan in case of rain.
