All middle school students will focus on four areas of learning:

  1. Reading

  2. Writing

  3. Language

  4. Speaking and Listening

Focus Area Descriptions

Reading: Students will read and analyze both literature and informational texts. They will determine theme, compare texts, compare and contrast genre and ideas in texts, use context to determine word meanings, provide objective summaries, use text evidence, analyze how parts of the text fit with the whole, and demonstrate comprehension.

Writing: Students will work to improve writing through collaboration with the teacher and peers. They will work to create four major types of writing: narratives, informative/explanatory essays, research writing, and argument writing. They will analyze their own writing and work to improve conventions, grammar, and meaning.

Language: Students will work to improve writing through conventions, grammar, and structure. They will also work to define and spell words. They will use tools such as a dictionary and thesaurus to help them determine meanings and implied meanings.

Speaking and Listening: Students will work to improve their listening skills by listening to and analyzing the work and ideas of others. They will also work to improve their speaking skills by presenting information to others and participating in classroom discussions.
