Title of the talk: “Distributed Intelligence at the Edge for 6G IoT in Terrestrial, Non-Terrestrial and Vehicular Networks ”
Abstract: The evolution toward 6G is transforming communication networks from connectivity infrastructures into distributed intelligent systems, where computation, communication, sensing, and learning are jointly orchestrated. This vision is particularly relevant for IoT services operating in terrestrial, non-terrestrial, and vehicular environments, where massive data generation, stringent latency constraints, mobility, limited energy, and intermittent connectivity make traditional cloud-centric approaches insufficient. This keynote will discuss how edge intelligence and distributed computing can support future 6G IoT services across integrated terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks. Starting from the edge-to-cloud and space–air–ground continuum, the talk will introduce the role of distributed learning and AI-driven decision-making for dynamic resource management. Particular attention will be given to vehicular and remote IoT scenarios, where computation offloading, network selection, service placement, and buffering must be jointly optimized under heterogeneous and time-varying conditions. The keynote will then present representative research case studies on multi-layer vehicular edge computing, federated learning for intelligent transportation systems, and LEO satellite-enabled space–edge–cloud computing for remote IoT data processing. The talk will conclude by highlighting open challenges in scalable orchestration, mobility-aware intelligence, energy-efficient distributed learning, and trustworthy AI-native 6G systems.
About the keynote speaker:
Prof. Daniele Tarchi is an Associate Professor of Telecommunications at the Department of Information Engineering, University of Florence. His research spans both terrestrial and satellite communication networks, with a strong focus on edge computing, edge-to-cloud continuum techniques, intelligence at the edge, distributed machine learning, and energy- and latency-aware computation offloading. His work also addresses joint optimization of computing and communication resources for next-generation wireless systems. Prof. Tarchi has been actively involved in numerous national and international research projects, collaborating extensively with European research institutions and industry partners. His research interests are closely aligned with emerging applications in Smart Cities, Integrated Terrestrial and Non-Terrestrial Networks (ITNTN), Intelligent Transportation Systems, and multimedia services. He has authored more than 170 scientific publications, including 71 articles in international journals, contributing significantly to the advancement of wireless communications and network intelligence. Prof. Tarchi currently serves on the Editorial Boards of several prestigious journals, including IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology, IET Communications, and IEEE Open Journal of the Communications Society. He has also held several leadership roles in major IEEE conferences, including IEEE WCNC, IEEE Globecom, and IEEE ICC. He has been a Senior Member of IEEE since 2012.
