ELA

Good reading and writing skills are very important for you as a student.  ELA continues the enhancement of the reading and writing process through the use of specific skills and strategies including revision, active and close reading skills, structured oral presentations using text evidence to support arguments and exploration of narrative writing, short fiction, poetry, and nonfiction. The skill emphasis in this course also includes spelling, grammar, mechanics and structure. The students will also be expected to read independently. They will stay organized and be active participants in class activities and discussions. Some reading selections for this course include but are not limited to: Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, Casey at the Bat, Thank You, Ma'm, and The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street.  Extra help on Tuesdays.

SOCIAL STUDIES

We will study physical and political geography and highlight the five themes of geography: location, place, human-environment interaction, movement, and regions. We start our year looking at map skills and move on to regions of the world, with a focus on geography and ancient history in the following areas: Central and South Asia, East Asia, Southeast Asia and Oceania, and Europe. Economics, civics and cultural studies will be woven into our lessons. Current events will provide opportunities for discussion and debate all year.
