Equality Objectives

The public sector equality duty (PSED) requires schools to prepare and publish equality objectives at least once every four years. The PSED was introduced by the Equality Act 2010 and applies to all schools, including maintained schools, academies, independent schools, maintained nursery schools, and maintained and non-maintained special schools.

Heron Way Primary School is committed to ensuring equality of provision throughout the school community. To achieve this, our equality objectives for 2022-2026 are as follows:

Objective 1

To increase the level of pupil voice by extending our traditional school council to include a fair representation of all pupils in school, and in this way to foster good relationships in the school between those who have protected characteristics and those who do not.

Why we have chosen this objective: To ensure that our school council has a fair and even representation of gender, race, culture and faith. This will enhance the school’s ability to make decisions relevant to all children within the school community.

To achieve this objective we plan to:Use a similar system, as in the past, to ensure a democratic system for school council selection but to also invite members onto the council to facilitate a broader representation of our school community.

Objective 2

Progress - We will narrow the GAP (Achievement and Resilience) Pupil Group Progress

Why we have chosen this objective: The pandemic has had a disproportionate impact on certain groups of children within the school - we are determined to narrow the gap between these groups of children and other children.

To achieve this objective we plan to ensure:

PP children make at least expected progress this year and the GAP between themselves and their peers is narrowing.(Termly and end of year TA/Assessment data)

  • SEND children make at least expected progress (Termly and end of year TA/Assessment data)

  • Pupil Premium strategy revised and enhanced on a new template

  • Governors observe Pupil Progress Meetings

  • Subscribe and understand FFT Aspire in anticipation of a move away from SIMs (allowing for quality pupil tracking) - Allowing for finer, more detailed contextual data for our children.

Objective 3

Ensure the literature within school that children choose to read is rich and diverse.

Why we have chosen this objective: We believe that it is important that people with particular characteristics are not disproportionately represented in the texts that children read.

To achieve this objective we plan to ensure: Our book audits/purchasing and children’s feedback show that many cultures, faiths, disabilities and genders are celebrated and represented within our fantastic school library.
