To provide a curriculum that gives pupils experience of a wide range of religions and their practices. They will do this through units that encourage them to pose philosophical questions, comparing and contrasting how followers express their religious beliefs and put them into practice in their daily lives and through significant life events. Pupils will explore their own identity and develop spiritual, moral and cultural values and beliefs as well as respect for those of others.
To build upon previous knowledge, skills and experiences relevant to their age and maturity. The children are introduced to basic ideas and concepts of religions in Early Years/Key Stage 1 studying familiar festivals and stories. They then go on to broaden their understanding through topics in Key Stage 2, in which they learn about how people may practice their religion through pilgrimage, fasting and worship. Key Christian religious celebrations are revisited with a different focus or from other viewpoints to build upon children’s knowledge and skills of analysis and interpretation. As the children get older they begin to explore more abstract and mature themes such as ‘Peace’, ‘Eternity’ and ‘Justice’, asking questions and reflecting upon their own beliefs. Tolerance sits at the heart of our school and our RE curriculum builds on this through respect and understanding.
