Our intent is that History at Heron Way will be knowledge rich, resource rich and enquiry based. Children will have a deep understanding of chronology before 1066 and be able to connect and compare different periods of history to each other. We want children to consider themselves historians. As such they should;
ask and answer historically valid and challenging questions,
use a range of primary sources to find out about the past and determine reliability,
develop their enquiry skills to solve or research ‘history mysteries,’
As a school we will implement this by having three objectives for each history subject the children study.
1. What knowledge will they learn?
2. What historical skill will they develop?
3. How will they develop understanding of a historical concept?
Teachers will use a variety of timelines and techniques to teach chronology and connection between different periods building on prior learning. Teachers will build their history teaching around an enquiry and teach children how to use sources and work like historians.
The impact on the children’s learning will be a knowledge rich, enquiry and source based education that allows them to develop higher order thinking skills. As well as understanding challenging concepts such as the chronology of events in British history before 1066; whilst looking at parallel events in wider societies across the globe. By the end of Year 6, children will be able to investigate and interrogate the validity of sources to help answer a range of questions.
