Intent:
By the time children at Heron Way leave our school, they will be confident geographers who will have skills to help them better understand the world they live in and its environments. They will have developed map skills, compared locations, investigated regions, and carried out research. They will have learned to ask thoughtful questions, and solved problems, whilst making geographical links with a variety of different subjects. They will have developed a solid sense of spatial awareness by using outdoor exploration and will also have been given opportunities to apply their knowledge of geographical enquiry. Our children will have learned to understand and anticipate future geographical and environmental challenges, to move beyond their immediate world and deepen their environmental knowledge.
We have a unique curriculum where knowledge is developed year on year - Children don't just study mountains in one year group and then rivers in another year group!
Implementation:
Geography is taught mainly discretely with effective cross-curricular links which helps to embed geographical knowledge and make it more meaningful for the children at Heron Way. We make sure that the "Geography" is not lost within an overarching "topic!" The Geography Curriculum Maps, which have been developed, contain a clear and progressive pathway of knowledge for teachers to follow in order for them to feel confident that subject content builds upon existing knowledge in a purposeful manner and has direction throughout all year groups. Heron Way shall offer our children an exciting range of field work studies and opportunities to explore their locality and beyond.
Impact:
Children should leave Heron Way as competent geographers who will be able to demonstrate an awareness of their physical and human world, and an understanding of environmental management and sustainability. They will understand the importance of their place within the world and the impact they may have through their actions. When asked to give a general description of any region on a world map or globe, our children should be able to confidently apply their acquired knowledge of geographical factors and offer an informed explanation of its key locational characteristics.
