For the first time ever, Congress held a hearing focused specifically on menopause, bringing national attention to gaps in research, provider education, treatment access, and insurance coverage.
Experts called for more menopause research, better medical training, and improved access to individualized care, including hormone therapy when appropriate. Lawmakers also requested a bipartisan GAO review to identify where federal research, education, and treatment efforts are falling short.
The hearing won’t change women’s healthcare overnight, because apparently that would be far too efficient. But it is an important step toward taking midlife women’s health more seriously.
