Annwyl Ddisgybl,

Mae’n bleser gennyf gyflwyno Llawlyfr y Chweched Dosbarth i chi a chredaf y bydd yn ddefnyddiol i chi wrth benderfynu pa lwybr i’w ddilyn ar ôl arholiadau TGAU. Cynigir ystod eang o gyrsiau yn Chweched Dosbarth Ysgol Uwchradd Aberteifi a fydd yn siwr o apelio nid yn unig at y person academaidd ond y disgybl mwy galwedigaethol ei natur hefyd. Mae’r opsiynau’n cael eu hadolygu a’u hymestyn yn gyson mewn cydweithrediad â sefydliadau addysgol eraill. Rydym yn cydweithio’n glós iawn gydag phartneriaid er mwyn sicrhau’r dewis mwyaf eang o gyrsiau ôl-16 oed. Sail y cydweithio yma yw Mesur Dysgu a Sgiliau (Cymru) sydd yn gosod canllawiau clir ar gyfer creu’r cwricwla ac yn rhoi sail statudol ar gyfer Llwybrau Dysgu 14 – 19.

Dau nod sydd i’r Chweched Dosbarth yma: galluogi myfyrwyr i gyrraedd y safonau uchaf o fewn eu gallu tra’n eu helpu i ddatblygu’n bobl ifainc cytbwys a chyflawn a fyddant yn werthfawr o fewn eu cymdeithas. Mae’r Chweched Dosbarth yn gyfnod cofiadwy. Nid yn unig y mae’n benllanw’ch gyrfa ysgol ond mae’n baratoad ar gyfer y cyfnod nesaf, sef bod yn oedolyn annibynnol, hyderus. Hoffwn i chi adael Ysgol Uwchradd Aberteifi gyda’r canlyniadau Lefel A gorau posib a phleser yw gweld y canlyniadau hyn yn gwella blwyddyn ar ôl blwyddyn. Rydym hefyd yn gweithio i sicrhau eich datblygiad fel unigolyn gydag ymdeimlad o bwrpas, hunan-werth a chyflawniad, yn ogystal ag ymwybyddiaeth o’ch rhinweddau a’ch galluoedd.

Bydd y ddwy flynedd yn Ysgol Uwchradd Aberteifi’n rhoi llu o gyfleoedd i chi i ddatblygu’ch diddordebau, astudio’n annibynnol a gwella’ch sgiliau mewn llawer o weithgareddau allgyrsiol. Byddwch yn ‘llawen gwrdd ag hen gyfeillion’ ond hefyd yn gwneud ffrindiau newydd a gwneud y penderfyniadau pwysig am y dyfodol. Ein dymuniad ni yw eich helpu i ddatblygu’n bobl sydd yn gallu gwynebu heriau bywyd a chyfrannu’n bositif i’ch amrywiol gymdeithasau. Cydweithio rhwng y rhieni, y myfyrwyr a’r ysgol yw’r allwedd i lwyddiant. Yn ogystal â Phenaeth Blwyddyn y Chweched Dosbarth, bydd y tiwtoriaid dosbarth yn gefn ac yn gymorth i’r disgyblion hefyd gan gynnig arweiniad a chyswllt yn ôl y galw. Ceir nosweithiau rhieni bob blwyddyn ac mae croeso i rieni gysylltu â ni os oes unrhyw bryderon. Gwnawn bopeth o fewn ein gallu i sicrhau bod pob un o’n myfyrwyr yn hapus a diogel mewn amgylchedd fydd yn caniatáu iddynt gyrraedd eu potensial academaidd.

Disgwyliwn safonau o’r radd flaenaf gan ein myfyrwyr  Chweched Dosbarth. Rhaid i chi gofrestru’n brydlon, mynychu pob un wers a chyflwyno’r gwaith ar amser. Mae disgwyl i’ch gwisg ysgol fod yn raenus gan eich bod yn gosod esiampl i’r disgyblion iau. Wrth ddychwelyd i’r Chweched Dosbarth rhaid i’r myfyrwyr barchu a chydymffurfio â’r rheolau ysgol yn ddiffael. Disgwylir i fyfyrwyr y Chweched Dosbarth fod yn esiampl dda i’r disgyblion iau a chaiff ymddygiad y Chweched Dosbarth gryn ddylanwad ar ethos yr ysgol gyfan. “Bydd pob disgybl yn llwyddo” yw datganiad o fwriad yr ysgol sy’n crynhoi ein nod o sicrhau bod pob un disgybl yn cyrraedd brig eu potensial personol. Yn y Chweched Dosbarth rydym yn annog ein myfyrwyr i ymgyrraedd yn uwch fyth, i arwain eraill a meithrin ynddoch yr hyder a’r gallu i wynebu heriau’r dyfodol yn annibynnol.

Dear Student,

I am pleased to present to you our Sixth Form Handbook which I trust will be of value to you as you take the important decision of what to study after your GCSEs. The Sixth Form at Ysgol Uwchradd Aberteifi offers a broad range of courses that will appeal to both the academic and vocational student. We have an options menu that we are constantly developing and extending in conjunction with neighbouring educational institutions. We work in close collaboration with our partners to ensure that our students are given the widest possible choice of courses post-16. This collaboration is underpinned by the Learning and Skills (Wales) Measure which provides clear guidelines for the creation of local curricula and is the statutory base of 14-19 Learning Pathways.

Our Sixth Form has two fundamental aims: to enable students to achieve the highest standards within their capability, and at the same time to ensure that they become balanced, self-reliant young adults able to make a full contribution to society. Life in the Sixth Form is a memorable experience. It is both the culmination of your school career and preparation for the next stage of your life as an independent, confident adult. We want you to leave Ysgol Uwchradd Aberteifi with the best possible A Level results, and it has been a pleasure to see these results improving year after year. We also value your development as an individual and aim to ensure that you leave with a sense of achievement, purpose and self-worth, and a secure understanding of your strengths and abilities.

The two years in the Sixth Form at Ysgol Uwchradd Aberteifi will provide you with many opportunities to explore your interests, to study independently and to develop your skills in a whole host of extra-curricular activities. You will strengthen existing friendships, make new ones and come to important decisions about your future. We aim to enable you to develop as mature young adults, ready for life’s challenges and able to make a positive contribution to wider society.

Success is achieved by collaboration between home, student, and school. The Head of Sixth Form as well as the form tutors will consult, support and offer guidance to the students. We offer annual parents evenings and encourage parents to contact us if there are any concerns. We will do all we can to ensure all students are happy, safe and given an environment in which to achieve their academic potential.

We demand the highest standards from our students. They are expected to register promptly, to attend all classes and complete all work on time. You must maintain the highest standards of school uniform and be a positive example to younger pupils by abiding with school rules at all times. We believe that the conduct of the Sixth Form has a considerable effect on the the whole school ethos.

“Every pupil will succeed”. This is our mission statement which summarises our aim of ensuring that each student reaches his or her potential fully. In the Sixth Form we challenge our students to climb even higher, to lead others and to grow in confidence and ability to finally take on the next challenges alone.

Ystyriwch y pynciau yr ydych yn eu hoffi gan y byddwch yn fwy tebygol o fod yn llwyddiannus ynddynt. Os ydych yn hoffi ’r pwnc y tebygrwydd yw y byddwch yn well ynddo ac yn cynnal safon uchel. Ystyriwch y pynciau y bydd o bosib eu hangen arnoch ar gyfer eich gyrfa yn y dyfodol. Gofynnwch am gyngor tiwtoriaid dosbarth, Pennaeth Blwyddyn a’r athro gyrfaoedd yn ogystal ag arbenigwyr sy’n gweithio yn y maes o’ch dewis. Many of you will have a specific career in mind but all of you will see Sixth Form study as a means of providing you with qualifications, experience and opportunities. In deciding to enter the Sixth Form you will no doubt have spent time in serious thought. This handbook will provide you with the subject information that you will need to make informed choices. You should talk to your parents when making your decisions and speak to subject teachers so that any questions you have can be answered.

If you are to benefit from entering the Sixth Form at Ysgol Uwchradd Aberteifi you must be prepared to extend yourself academically and to take advantage of the opportunities which will exist for developing skills, leadership and responsibility. Your aim should be to aspire to success.

Don’t panic if you have not yet decided on a future career, most people haven’t. Remember that subject choice should be based on your interests and ability. There are many courses on offer, so it will be possible to keep your options open. A team of staff is on hand to help you look at what courses best fit your needs. Details of the courses available are provided later in this handbook.

Before choosing your subjects, you should consider the following questions:

What career do I intend following?

• What qualifications does it require?

• How do these qualifications combine to form a study pathway

• Will I be able to gain these qualifications in the Sixth Form?

• How long will it take me?

Consider subjects that you like, as you are more likely to be successful in them. If you like a subject then you are probably good at it and achieve a high standard. This is a valid base upon which to select. Consider subjects that you may need for a future career. Seek out advice from teachers, Careers Advisors and professionals who may work in your chosen field of study. Many universities and employers are looking for students to show that they have broad interests and skills, however for some courses and careers you will need to specialise at this stage.

Mae bwlch mawr rhwng natur y gwaith ym Mlwyddyn 11 a 12 ac mae’n werth sôn am ddwy agwedd yn enwedig. Mae’r gwaith yn symud yn ei flaen yn gyflym. Er nad oes gennych gymaint o bynciau, peidiwch â thwyllo’ch hunan y bydd yn amser hamddenol! Byddwch yn astudio pob pwnc mewn llawer mwy o ddyfnder a rhoddir llawer o bwyslais ar werthuso a dadansoddi. Ni allwch gymryd yn ganiataol y byddwch yn cyrraedd Blwyddyn 13 ar ôl dechrau Blwyddyn 12. Caiff eich cynnydd ei fonitro’n ofalus ac oni fydd yn foddhaol ni chewch fynd ymlaen i’r flwyddyn nesaf. Seilir pob geirda am geisiadau am Addysg Uwch neu swyddi ar eich cynnydd, ymroddiad a chyrhaeddiad ym Mlwyddyn 12. Felly bydd eich graddau UG yn brintiedig ar geisiadau UCAS.

Hunan ddisgyblaeth yw un o’r prif anghenion sydd yn gwahaniaethu rhwng Blwyddyn 11 a 12 / 13. Er fod y cwricwlwm academaidd yn drwm bydd cyfleoedd am ASTUDIO PERSONOL pan nad oes gwersi swyddogol. Mae disgwyl i chi dreulio amser yn y Llyfrgell neu mewn un o’r ardaloedd astudio’r Chweched Dosbarth. Mae’n hanfodol eich bod yn bresennol ymhob gwers o’r cwrs neu ni allwn sicrhau y byddwch yn cael aros yn y Chweched.

Your sixth form studies will include core, compulsory elements but the majority of your time will be based on your selected option subjects. Your option subjects will usually have 8-10 lessons each so a typical Year 12 student will have the following lesson allocation:

The gulf between the nature of work in Year 11 and Year 12 is wide, and two points are worth identification. The pace of work required can be deceptive. Although you will be studying fewer subject areas, your studies will not be easier. Each subject is covered in far greater depth and emphasis is often placed on evaluation and analysis of subject material. Embarking on a two year Advanced course does not mean automatic progression from Year 12 to Year 13. Your progress is carefully monitored in Year 12 and you will need to demonstrate that you have made sufficient progress in order to make the transition into Year 13. All school references for Higher Education applications and employment are based mainly on progress and achievement in Year 12. Therefore AS level grades will feature on UCAS applications.

The need for self management is probably the most distinctive feature distinguishing life in Years 12 and 13 from that of Year 11. Although the academic curriculum is time consuming there will be opportunity for PRIVATE STUDY when students are not in timetabled lessons. Students will be expected to use this time wisely in Library spaces or dedicated sixth form study areas. Students must be aware that full attendance in any given subject is essential.

• Perfformiadau cerddorol – cyfleoedd i ddatblygu sgiliau’r perfformwr unigol yn ogystal ag ymaelodi mewn corau, grwpiau cerdd a dramâu.

• Cymryd rhan mewn chwaraeon trwy ymaelodi gydag un o nifer o dimau mewn dewis eang o gêmau;

• Gwobr Dug Caeredin – rhaglen boblogaidd ac uchel iawn ei pharch o weithgareddau, digwyddiadau a theithiau.

Os ydych i elwa o fod yn y chweched mae’n rhaid i chi fod yn barod i ymestyn eich hun yn academaidd ac i fanteisio ar y cyfleon sy’n bodoli i ddatblygu sgiliau, arweinyddiaeth a chyfrifoldeb. Anelu at lwyddiant yw eich nod.

As Sixth Form students you are also able to access a very comprehensive enrichment programme, including:

• Pastoral support which ha s the aim of ensuring that your progress is regularly monitored, whilst addressing the wider social and emotional needs of individuals. This attention given to you as an individual student is one of our strongest and most important features;

• Leadership development through the opportunities to become a prefect and peer mentor. You will also be actively encouraged to support a range of local and national charities whilst in the sixth form;

• Musical performances - opportunities are available for developing the skills of the individual performer as well as membership of our senior choirs, ensembles and drama productions;

• Participation in sporting activities through membership of one of our many successful teams in a wide range of sports;

• The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme which is a highly regarded and very popular programme of activities, events and expeditions.

Ymuno â’r Chweched ym mis Medi

Dylech gwblhau’r ffurflen opsiynau yn awr i rhoi syniad o’ch dewisiadau. Gallwch wneud cais i ymuno â’r Chweched ar unrhyw adeg ym mlwyddyn 11, ond gwneir y penderfyniad terfynol ar y diwrnod yn dilyn y canlyniadau TGAU. Nid yw’r ffurflen opsiynau yn ymrwymiad llwyr i ymuno â ni, ond mae’n gymorth mawr i ni sicrhau bod y cyrsiau mwyaf addas ar gael i chi. Yn bwysicach fyth, bydd y ffurflen yn eich helpu chi i gynllunio’r dyfodol a gwneud penderfyniadau call. Os ydych yn ymuno o sefydliad arall bydd angen llenwi ffurflen gais yn ogystal.

Oes grantiau ar gael?

Gallwch geisio am lwfans cynhaliaeth addysg (LCA) sy’n cynnig hyd at £30 yr wythnos i’r myfyriwr sy’n astudio am 15 awr yr wythnos neu fwy. Mae yna amodau ariannol arbennig yn effeithio ar eich cais. Ni fyddwch yn gymwys ar gyfer y LCA os yw cyfanswm incwm eich rhieni yn £30,000 y flwyddyn neu’n fwy.

Joining the Sixth Form in September

The first step is to complete an options sheet to identify the subjects you are interested in studying. You may apply for the Sixth Form at any stage in year 11, and the process is only finalised on the day following the GCSE results. An application to join us does not commit you but does help us to plan the appropriate courses for you. More importantly it will help you to make the right decisions. If you are joining the school for the first time for the sixth form, then you will need to complete an application form as well.

Are there any grants available?

You can apply for an education maintenance allowance (EMA) which offers up to £30 per week for students studying for 15 hours per week or more. The success of your application is dependent upon certain financial conditions. You will not qualify for an EMA if the total income of your parents is £30,000 or more per annum.
