Hi, I’m Dr Pearce and I’m Head of Maths and Computing at Ysgol Penrhyn Dewi.
During maths lessons in our school you will learn about lots of different topics.
We start with introducing algebra through looking at patterns and sequences, and go on to developing your understanding of number and problem solving and looking in more depth at shape and angles.
Maths lessons in year 7 are taught with your form group so everyone is supported to learn the same topics. Lots of different visual representations and diagrams are used to help build understanding so that everyone can progress. Pupils who may need extra support in numeracy are taken out of non-core lessons for extra small group sessions.
In Year 10 and 11 everyone in Wales takes two GCSEs, one in Mathematics and one in Numeracy. We also complete a qualification in personal financial maths, so everyone leaves school understanding how to look after their money.
Computing covers both IT and Computer Science.
Computer Science looks more at how a computer works. So in year 7 we delve inside a computer to see the different parts and how they work together, as well as learning about algorithms and how programs work. Programming environments we use in year 7 includes both Scratch and BBC Microbits (we have a class set of these to use in school). These lessons are taught in blocks as part of the technology rotation, so you have a smaller group and more lessons a week, then you swap round with art, food and resistant materials before having a second intensive block of lessons.
IT in year 7 includes online safety and how to be a good digital citizen, an introduction to animation, how to communicate your ideas using advanced techniques in software such as PowerPoint, and how to analyse data using J2Data. This is taught throughout the year in your form groups.
In Year 10 and 11 we currently offer Computer Science as a GCSE, although we are looking into offering the new GCSE in Digital Technology once this is available.
