Reading Support at Home
Reading for twenty minutes every day is the best way to improve results in English and all subjects. YBG has a great library and your child's English teacher is always ready with a book recommendation. If your child would rather read about news and current events, try the websites below:

Steps to Support Reading
Have your child read a short text. This could be a book they are reading or it could be an article you show them on your phone from one of the websites above.
Ask them questions before they start reading.
Have you seen something similar to this before?
Do you know anything about this topic?
Ask them questions while they read.
Ask about a specific word or sentence: What does this mean?
Why do you think…?
Ask them questions after they read.
How do you feel about…?
What was interesting about this? or If this is not interesting, why?
Writing Support at Home
Keeping a writing journal of daily events is a great way to improve your writing. The journal can be done online, using a Word or Google Doc, or it can be done in a notebook. Look at the checklist below for good journal writing. There is also a video to watch that explains the basics of a good journal entry.
Steps to Support Writing
Ask your child to write a daily or weekly journal. Use the checklist and video to learn what goes into a good journal entry.
Ask your child to write for about 10 minutes about recent events in their life. They could write it online or in a notebook.
Read your child's work. Praise good vocabulary choices and interesting writing.
You could also point out ways to improve accuracy, like the correct use of capital letters or correcting the misspelling of common words.
