In Bassaleg, we are very proud of our Welsh etifeddiaeth (heritage) and we celebrate this through various Welsh culture days, have had and continue to have visitors to the school to share their Welsh experiences and promote Welsh language and culture across the curriculum through our use of Bilingualism and the Cwricwlwm Cymreig. Take a look below at just some of our amazing extra curricular activities.
Bronwen Lewis in Bassaleg 2023
Welsh singing Tik Tok sensation Bronwen Lewis performed in Bassaleg School on January 19th. From Castell ar y Fryn (Castle on the Hill) to Yma o Hyd by Dafydd Iwan, year 9 belted out at the top of their lungs the bilingual lyrics with the help of Bronwen Lewis and her guitar. At the end of the gig, year 9 asked some inspiring questions ranging from her singing career to her love of the Welsh language. Year 9 were left feeling proud of their country, language and heritage to the point where they even asked for an encore!

Dafydd Iwan on Teams 2023
What a treat! Dafydd Iwan did a Teams meeting with the whole school P2.
It was such a privilege to be able to meet him during the session and listen to him sing the iconic ‘Yma o Hyd’ song live for us all with his acoustic guitar.
It was also so wonderful to be able to have a Q and A session with him. Well done to all who asked such brilliant questions. He thoroughly enjoyed his Teams meeting with us and next time, hopefully he can be here with us in person!
Annual Welsh Cooking Competition
To celebrate St David’s Day, year 7 and year 8 have been busy in taking part in our annual Welsh themed cooking competition. They have been very busy cooking and baking all sorts of Welsh goods, whether it be traditional Welsh meals, Welsh themed treats or a combination of cultures! Here are just some of our amazing pictures!
