Create a safe, caring and stimulating environment where each child can develop their social and emotion and educational potential, whilst becoming independent and active long-term learners. At Teilo Tots, we understand how important it is to find the best childcare for little ones. Leaving a child is never easy, but parents can rest assured that with our nurturing and caring environment, our nursery will become their “home from home”. Our main objective is to ensure that all children are welcomed into a caring and nurturing environment which is adapted to suit their own individual needs. It is important to us that we work in partnership with the parents, carers and any external agencies when welcoming a child into our setting.

At Teilo Tots, located within a self-contained area of St Teilo’s Catholic Primary School in Tenby, we are committed to providing a rich and engaging learning environment for our children. Our activities are thoughtfully planned to cater to each child's age, developmental stage, and individual needs, aligning with our aims and objectives while reflecting the current Welsh Government strategy. We offer both adult-led and child-led experiences, ensuring that our programming is flexible and responsive to the children's interests.
Our activities undergo thorough risk assessments to ensure safety, and we actively encourage children to engage in the review or evaluation of their experiences as they feel comfortable. Emphasising transparency, Teilo Tots features an open-plan design with distinct areas, promoting interaction and seamless transitions in their learning journey. We carefully document each child’s unique needs and preferences when they register with us, ensuring that every aspect of our provision is tailored to support their development.
At Teilo Tots, we recognise the vital role that parents, carers, and staff play in helping children acclimatise to our environment. We prioritise collaboration to foster confidence, enabling children to engage fully in the wide range of activities available. Our ‘settling in’ service offers parents and carers essential support during their child’s transition to our care. We understand that each child is unique; some may require more time to adjust than others. Accordingly, we welcome parents and carers to accompany their child for all or part of the session, in line with our admissions policy, ensuring a comfortable settling process.
Children who stay all day will need to bring in a bottle of water, a fruit snack for the morning and a packed lunch. Healthy snacks, which are age appropriate, are provided mid-afternoon. We also provide water or milk for the children to drink throughout the day.
At Teilo Tots, we create a nurturing environment that fosters holistic development. Our spacious main play area features designated zones for various activities, alongside a separate quiet area for relaxation. Conveniently located toilets with changing facilities ensure comfort, while our secure outdoor space is essential for physical development.
The indoor environment supports imaginative play and quieter moments, structured in a way that empowers children to build confidence and awareness of their surroundings, allowing them to explore their capabilities safely.
We focus on toddlers' personal, social, and emotional skills, teaching them to take turns, share, and build relationships. Our play-based learning philosophy is informed by careful observation, facilitating improvement in areas like potty training and social interaction.
Teilo Tots offers a variety of educational resources for pre-school children, placing emphasis on school readiness. We align our practices with Welsh Government initiatives, ensuring that children experience both free play and structured activities based on the New Curriculum for Wales.
Toilet training occurs in partnership with parents, focusing on each child's readiness. Our practitioners support families throughout this process, celebrating progress.
The outdoor area is crucial for early childhood development, promoting exploration and interaction with nature in a safe environment. It includes an outdoor classroom and wet weather play space.
Flexibility is key, with daily activities adapting to each child's individual needs. There is ample opportunity for unstructured play alongside planned educational activities that reinforce skills. Our curriculum adheres to the New Curriculum for Wales, providing careful monitoring and assessment of each child's development.
The pre-school day balances free play and structured activities connected to thematic topics that enhance learning and foster independence. For 3 and 4-year-olds, we offer afternoon wrap-around care for part-time school children and the Childcare Offer for Wales for eligible families. We are a predominantly English medium setting, incorporating incidental Welsh throughout the day.
At Teilo Tots, our membership with Early Years Wales ensures we remain at the forefront of current developments in childcare and education. We actively receive information from Early Years Wales, which provide us with practical advice and relevant information that we are pleased to share with parents and carers. Additionally, we have access to a variety of other publications from Early Years Wales. Our partnership also allows us to invest in our staff’s continuous professional development through endorsed courses and training pathways, keeping parents and carers informed about these initiatives.
Teilo Tots has developed a comprehensive pack of policies and procedures aimed at outlining our operational practices, including the management of routine activities, complaints, concerns, and emergencies that may arise during service hours. These policies are crafted to ensure the effective and safe management of our service, providing an optimal environment and experience for the children and families we serve. In line with national minimum standards and regulations, we regularly review and update our policies, informing CIW of any changes. The relevant policies will be uploaded onto Class Dojo for easy access by our community.
At Teilo Tots, our dedicated staff adopt a reflective approach to enhance children’s development, employing observation as a vital tool for planning meaningful activities that cater to individual needs. Children’s progress is meticulously assessed through observation and carefully documented. We understand our responsibility to share specific information with the local authority, Care Inspectorate Wales (CIW), and, in instances of Child Development Assessment Profiles, the Welsh Government. Upholding the highest standards of confidentiality, we ensure that records are maintained securely and remain available for discussion with parents and carers at any time, fostering open communication and partnership in the learning journey.
