Rainforest Rescue: Stop the Chop!
The focus of this context is the Humanities AoLE from Curriculum for Wales. We will, specifically on the following Statement of What Matters: ‘Our natural world is diverse and dynamic, influenced by processes and human actions.’
What will we be covering this half-term?
We will explore the fascinating world of rainforests and the urgent issue of deforestation. Students will learn about the unique ecosystems found in tropical rainforests, the incredible diversity of plants and animals, and why these habitats are often called the “lungs of the Earth.” We will will also investigate the causes and consequences of deforestation, including its impact on wildlife, climate change, and indigenous communities.
In Literacy we will be learning about persuasive writing and applying our skills to adverts and a persuasive letter on the theme of deforestation. We will also be revisiting literacy genres taught in the Autumn term, and applying our knowledge and skills to this current context. Such carefully planned revisiting helps to ensure that pupils both deepen and strengthen their understanding of each genre.
We will be applying our numeracy skills throughout the context as we calculate and compare areas of deforestation and work with lots of data to back up our learning and persuasive arguments (this is in addition to our usual Big Maths curriculum). Our data skills will also be enhanced through the use of digital technology.
