Presentation from Ysgol Glannau Gwaun pupils in years 4-6 who spoke eloquently and confidently about how Voice 21 has helped them find and share their voice, and set some thought-provoking tasks for the adults in the room to explore learning to talk.
Presentation from Tim Bercury, YBG, on his work across the cluster and showcasing two groups of pupils engaging in sophisticated, robust and sustained discussion (in front of groups of 30 adults) to demonstrate learning through talk.
Kate Clarke, PDCS, shared their work on developing reading for pleasure in collaboration with The OU and how Empathy Lab has not only improved reading, engagement and empathy but also led to powerful social action.
If you are interested in Empathy Lab, please contact Kate this summer term as she has a short-term, part-time secondment and so has some extra capacity to support this term, but returns full-time to school in September.
Catrin and I shared this introduction to The Writing Revolution. Our working draft of the resource with explanations, strategies and examples is alongside and will continue to develop with the pilot network. If you would like to join the pilot group, please do let us know. We will share updates through our network.
We identified 15 cogs that contribute to an effective language strategy, each one supporting and improving the performance of each other. We then developed an editable tool to support self-evaluation of the 15 cogs, to identify strengths to share with others and areas to prioritise for development. This is offered as an optional tool for you to use as you see fit.
One colleague found that he could complete this self-evaluation during one PPA as the school already had all of the information he needed but it was in lots of different documents and not centralised anywhere to give a clear overview. He also chose to add another column to set out next steps to be developed in SDP, which makes a direct link between self-evaluation and improvement planning. He intends to discuss with all staff and adapt as needed to develop a shared understanding of current strengths and how the staff will plan to improve the areas to be prioritised.
Other colleagues are considering using the tool on a closure day, others are considering how each school in their cluster could share their school overview to create a cluster overview. Please use/adapt the tool however will best support your leadership of languages - it is not for anyone else's benefit but yours.
In response to requests about what other schools are doing and what is working well for pupils, we will do some information gathering from schools, collate the findings and share them back out with the networks. The intention is to ensure everyone knows how to build on the strengths in Pembrokeshire to share workload and support pupil progress.
Please complete this phase by Mon 17 June 2024.
