Corned Beef, known as 'bully beef' was eaten in the trenches. Sometimes soldiers would crush biscuits into their food to make it taste better.
Parcels from home with presents such as tobacco, chocolate and cake were a welcome treat. Prisoners of war received similar parcels from the Red Cross.
Soldiers on the front line would heat meals over candles and they would eat out of a mess tin which was part of their kit.

Ration books were used to show how much food people were allowed and how much food they had bought.
