World Book Day 5th March 2026
We are delighted to share that our World Book Day celebrations raised an incredible £866.20 through our Sponsored Readathon. This is a fantastic achievement, and we are so grateful for the enthusiasm and support shown by our pupils and families. Thank you to everyone who took part, gathered sponsors, and helped us promote a love of reading across the school. These funds will go directly towards purchasing new books for our classrooms and library, helping to inspire even more young readers. If you have a sponsor form which hasn't been returned please can you send it in by Monday 16th March. Thank you!
Reception - 'People who help us' Topic Talk
Reception class had their final visitor yesterday for their current topic - People who help us. Mrs Davies, mum of Enfys and Alun and our PTA chair person came in to talk to Reception about the organic food company that she works for - Able and Cole.
The children were treated to a whole host of new or different fruits and vegetables which they were able to feel, smell and taste. They were able to pop peas out of their pods, taste rainbow carrots, smell fennel, ginger and turmeric. They tasted green tomatoes, blood oranges and discovered kumquats and physalis fruit.
Today they will even be trying to turn the radishes and beetroot into crisps!
Reception had so much fun learning and discovering in a hands on interactive session which showed them what happens after it moves from the fields with the farmers. Her job was to check and choose suitable foods before they reach the shops.
Grand Council Event written by Elijah and Molly
On Wednesday, we, as Grand Council ambassadors proudly represented Mount Pleasant Primary at the Grand Council event held at Llanwern High School. It was a jam-packed day of history, creativity, and—of course—excellent food!
The highlights of our day included:
We met with Keith, who shared fascinating stories about the heritage of Newport.
In a creative workshop, we pitched fresh ideas for new competitions and activities we'd love to see at the Eisteddfod.
Alongside Chartwells food suppliers, we made a delicious potato, leek, and onion soup. This was followed by a massive buffet lunch where we got to eat as much as we wanted (we had 3 deserts!)
We capped off the day with Sheldon the Rapper. After we filled pages with our thoughts and drawings, Sheldon turned them into an epic freestyle rap. We even picked up some new professional tips to add to our own Year 6 rap repertoire!
We returned to school with goodie bags, and plenty of stories to share. Thank you very much to Mrs Black who took us there and back.
Visit from PCSO Alex Donne - Internet Safety Talk
Year 5 and Year 6 enjoyed a valuable visit from PC Alex this week, who spoke with pupils about the importance of staying safe online. The session helped children understand how to make sensible choices, recognise potential risks, and use the internet responsibly. It was an engaging and informative talk that reinforced key messages about keeping themselves safe in the digital world.

Brawddegau Bendigedig Bryn Hyfryd
This week’s brawddeg bendigedig is:
Sul y Mamau Hapus, which means Happy Mother’s Day! As we get ready for Sunday, we want to encourage everyone to say a big Diolch (Thank you) for everything our mums do for us. It is always better to use some Welsh than none at all! Why not try using these phrases at home?
Diolch am... all the delicious dinners!
Diolch am... helping me with my homework.
Diolch am... the big hugs when I get home from school.
Diolch am... everything you do to help me grow.
Remember: "A little Welsh is better than no Welsh at all!"
To all the Mount Pleasant mums, grandmothers, and carers: Sul y Mamau Hapus to you all this Sunday!

Managing Medication in School
In line with our Managing Medicines Policy, the school cannot give pupils any non–life‑saving medication. These medicines must be given by parents or carers at home, alternatively you can contact the school office to arrange a time to come in and give the medication yourself.
For safeguarding reasons, no medication should be put in a pupil’s bag or lunchbox.
Any prescribed long term life-saving medication must be handed straight to the school office by an adult, along with the consent and medical information forms and signed off by the Headteacher.
We ask all parents who have children with asthma to make sure their child has an in date inhaler in school.
Thank you for helping us keep all pupils safe.
Breakfast Club
To ensure the safety and wellbeing of all pupils, we kindly remind parents and guardians that Breakfast Club admission runs strictly between 8:20 and 8:30am. For safeguarding reasons, children arriving after 8:30am will not be admitted. It is essential that pupils don't access the school site until 8.15am as nobody is available to supervise children on the yard at this time.
It is essential that every child is personally handed over to a member of the Breakfast Club team at the main doors. Please do not leave the premises until this handover has been completed. These procedures are in place to protect all children. If you miss the deadline for entry you will need to wait with your child and ensure they enter school through their allocated class entrance. Thank you for your cooperation and continued support.
Timber Trail Installation
Safety Reminder: To keep everyone safe, we kindly ask that pupils do not use the Timber Trail before or after school. The equipment must only be used under staff supervision during the school day. Thank you for helping us keep playtime safe and fun for all!
Important Reminder regarding 'No Nuts in School'
We kindly remind all parents and carers that our school is a nut-free zone. This means that nuts and nut-based products must not be brought in snacks or packed lunches. Several of our students have severe nut allergies, and even trace amounts can trigger life-threatening reactions. These allergies are not just uncomfortable, they can be extremely dangerous, requiring immediate medical attention. By keeping nuts out of school, we’re helping to create a safe and inclusive environment for every child. Thank you for your continued support and vigilance in protecting our students’ health.
School Attendance
Remember not to take holidays in term time. Poor attendance can significantly impact on the well-being and academic attainment of your child. Our attendance target is 96.% for the whole school. Please see chart which demonstrates the effects of good and poor attendance. Our current whole school attendance is 95.5%. If your child is unwell please contact the school office.
