Year 6 Visit to Bassaleg's Gym and Dance Display
Year 6 Transition Visit to Bassaleg School
On Wednesday, as part of our ongoing transition programme, our Year 6 pupils had the wonderful opportunity to attend the Gym and Dance Display at Bassaleg School. It was a fantastic experience from start to finish. Pupils from Years 7 to 11 showcased an impressive range of gymnastic and dance skills, all performed to music with confidence, creativity and real enthusiasm. Our Year 6s were absolutely enthralled.
A particularly special moment was seeing so many former Mount Pleasant Primary pupils taking part. Their performances gave our Year 6 children a glimpse of what lies ahead—new opportunities, new clubs to join, and the chance to develop their own talents as they move into secondary school.
Girls Football Tournament
Our girls’ football team took part in the tournament at Spytty this week and despite the very wet and chilly weather, they showed fantastic teamwork, resilience and enthusiasm throughout the day. The girls represented the school brilliantly and clearly enjoyed the experience, supporting one another during matches and breaks. Thank you to everyone who helped with transport and for your continued support in celebrating girls’ football across Newport. Huge thanks to Miss Jenkins and Miss Durston for arranging and supporting the event.
MPPS Podcast
Year 5M have the role of Digital Leaders this year and have been hard at work creating a quick podcast to share all the amazing work happening in and around school at the moment. Take a listen and you could even win a Dojo prize for your class!
Safer internet day 2026
Our Year 5M Digital Leaders did a fantastic job leading this week’s assembly in celebration of Safer Internet Day 2026. They confidently shared important messages about staying safe online, including how to recognise trustworthy information, protect personal details, and be kind and responsible digital citizens. There is a focus this year all about the use of AI and have we can be safe and sensible when using it. Their clear explanations and thoughtful examples helped the whole school understand how we can use the internet positively and safely. Well done, 5M you were brilliant role models!

Eisteddfod Home Project – Cynefin mewn Bocs
As part of our Eisteddfod celebrations, we are inviting all pupils to take part in a special home project: Cynefin mewn Bocs.
What is Cynefin?
Cynefin is a Welsh word that describes the place where you feel you belong — somewhere that shapes you, comforts you, or holds special meaning. It could be a favourite walk, a beach you visit often, a grandparent’s garden, or even a cosy spot at home. Everyone’s cynefin is unique.
The Project
Children are asked to create a tiny “Cynefin in a Box” — matchbox‑sized only. They may decorate a matchbox or make their own miniature box, but it must stay very small (not shoebox size).
Inside the box, pupils should include a small object or symbol that represents their chosen cynefin. For example, if their special place is a beach in Wales, they might include a pebble or a pinch of sand. On a small gift tag, they should write a brief explanation (in English or Welsh) describing why this place is their cynefin and what it means to them.
Important Details
Boxes should be brought into school during the first week back, by Friday 27th February.
Entries will be judged the following week as part of our Eisteddfod celebrations.
Please make sure your child writes their name and house colour (Coch, Melyn, Gwyrdd or Glas) on the back of the gift tag.
We can’t wait to see the thoughtful and creative ways the children choose to represent their cynefin. Pob Lwc!
Brawddegau Bendigedig Bryn Hyfryd
Criw Cymraeg – Brawddeg Bendigedig Bryn Hyfryd
This week, Criw Cymraeg would like to use our Brawddeg Bendigedig Bryn Hyfryd slot to wish everyone a very happy half term:
“Hanner Tymor Hapus Iawn, bawb!”
Over the holidays, we’d love all our pupils to teach their parents three new Welsh phrases. These could be phrases they’ve learnt during their daily 15‑minute Welsh games, or any of our past Brawddegau Bendigedig. To help everyone get started, here are a few ideas:
Sut wyt ti? – How are you?
Dw i’n hoffi… – I like…
Diolch yn fawr – Thank you very much
Ga i…? – May I have…?
Wyt ti’n barod? – Are you ready?
It’s a brilliant way to keep practising Cymraeg at home and to help everyone grow in confidence.
Diolch yn fawr from Year 6 Criw Cymraeg — mwynhewch yr hanner tymor!

Managing Medication in School
In line with our Managing Medicines Policy, the school cannot give pupils any non–life‑saving medication. These medicines must be given by parents or carers at home, alternatively you can contact the school office to arrange a time to come in and give the medication yourself.
For safeguarding reasons, no medication should be put in a pupil’s bag or lunchbox.
Any prescribed long term life-saving medication must be handed straight to the school office by an adult, along with the consent and medical information forms and signed off by the Headteacher.
We ask all parents who have children with asthma to make sure their child has an in date inhaler in school.
Thank you for helping us keep all pupils safe.

Breakfast Club
To ensure the safety and wellbeing of all pupils, we kindly remind parents and guardians that Breakfast Club admission runs strictly between 8:20 and 8:30am. For safeguarding reasons, children arriving after 8:30am will not be admitted. It is essential that pupils don't access the school site until 8.15am as nobody is available to supervise children on the yard at this time.
It is essential that every child is personally handed over to a member of the Breakfast Club team at the main doors. Please do not leave the premises until this handover has been completed. These procedures are in place to protect all children. If you miss the deadline for entry you will need to wait with your child and ensure they enter school through their allocated class entrance. Thank you for your cooperation and continued support.
Timber Trail Installation
Safety Reminder: To keep everyone safe, we kindly ask that pupils do not use the Timber Trail before or after school. The equipment must only be used under staff supervision during the school day. Thank you for helping us keep playtime safe and fun for all!
Important Reminder regarding 'No Nuts in School'
We kindly remind all parents and carers that our school is a nut-free zone. This means that nuts and nut-based products must not be brought in snacks or packed lunches. Several of our students have severe nut allergies, and even trace amounts can trigger life-threatening reactions. These allergies are not just uncomfortable, they can be extremely dangerous, requiring immediate medical attention. By keeping nuts out of school, we’re helping to create a safe and inclusive environment for every child. Thank you for your continued support and vigilance in protecting our students’ health.
School Attendance
Remember not to take holidays in term time. Poor attendance can significantly impact on the well-being and academic attainment of your child. Our attendance target is 96.% for the whole school. Please see chart which demonstrates the effects of good and poor attendance. Our current whole school attendance is 95.61%. If your child is unwell please contact the school office.
