A Message from Newport City Council regarding acceptable behaviour on school site
Newport City Council will not tolerate violent, aggressive, abusive or threatening behaviour from members of the public. If this happens you will be asked to leave the building, the police may be called and you may leave yourself open to prosecution.
Any such behaviour will be recorded and shared across council departments. This may lead to the withdrawal of council services.
Head lice and Nits
Head lice and nits are very common in young children and their families. They are not caused by dirty hair and are picked up by head-to-head contact. Chartwells Workshops with Y2, Y3 and Y4
Sam from Chartwells Catering came to deliver three fantastic workshops for Year 2, 3 and 4 this week. Year 2 were able to taste food from Italy, Greece and Mexico. They really enjoyed experiencing new flavours. Year 3 discussed sustainability and the importance of reducing food waste. They designed fantastic posters to raise awareness of this important issue. Year 4 also got to taste from from different countries, and even had a sneaky look around our school kitchen to see how the amazing kitchen staff are able to cook so much food each day for us.
Year 2 Parent Visitor
A huge thanks to Ethan's mum for coming in to talk to the class about South Africa. As part of our topic we are looking at countries where family members grew up. Mrs Lane kindly brought in lots of South African artefacts to look at and we even go to taste some yummy biscuits and warm chocolate milk. We followed this up by researching the wonderful animals that live in South Africa.

Wellbeing Survey
We are committed to creating a school environment where every pupil feels safe, supported, and able to thrive. To help us understand how well we are meeting the wellbeing needs of our pupils, we are inviting parents and carers to share their views in this short survey.

Dynamo
Week beginning Monday 18th May 2026 the whole school will be taking part in 'DYNAMO'. Our pupils will be developing their entrepreneurial skills, they'll be setting up a class business, working out costings, designing products, completing market research, advertising, training a sales team and hopefully working out profits made following the big DYNAMO sale on Thursday 21st May at 2.30pm. Morning Nursery will be holding their Dynamo sale at 10.45am and afternoon Nursery will be 2.30pm.
We would like to invite parents to the DYNAMO event, as we thought you might line to purchase some of the wonderful products made by our pupils. products will range from 50p to £2.00. All funds raised will be put towards purchasing resources that will benefit every class.
If you're able to attend, please collect your child at 2.30pm on Thursday 21st May from their classroom door and make your way to the Dynamo stalls on the middle yard. Please access the school from the main pedestrian gate.
Stay and Play after school provision will be running as usual. There will be opportunities for Stay and Play children to purchase from the Dynamo Stalls. Please can pupils bring their spending money in a purse/wallet which is clearly labelled.
We look forward to celebrating Dynamo week with our school community. We hope you can all make it.

A polite reminder about parking
To help us keep all pupils safe, we kindly ask parents and carers not to park on the school grounds at any time. For health and safety reasons, the school gates must remain locked at all times, vehicles on site make this difficult to manage safely. This includes after school hours when extra curricular clubs are taking place and whilst Stay and Play are using the facilities.
Please also ensure that no cars are parked in front of the school gates, as this blocks access for emergency vehicles and prevents staff from opening and closing the gates when needed.

Brawddegau Bendigedig Bryn Hyfryd
Our Criw Cymraeg are excited to share this week’s Brawddeg Bendigedig Bryn Hyfryd. The phrase we are focusing on is:
“Beth ydy dy hobiau di?”
“Beth ydy dy hobiau di?”
Meaning: “What are your hobbies?”
This sentence is now on our Sgriblo Sydyn board, and we would love every year group to add something to the board using this question and a simple answer.

Here are some child‑friendly answers your child might use:
Dw i’n hoffi chwarae pêl-droed.
I like playing football.
Dw i’n hoffi darllen.
I like reading.
Dw i’n hoffi dawnsio.
I like dancing.
Dw i’n hoffi canu.
I like singing.
Dw i’n hoffi chwarae gemau cyfrifiadur.
I like playing computer games.
Younger pupils might simply write the hobby word, e.g.:

🏠 How you can support at home (even with no Welsh!)
You don’t need to speak Welsh to help. A few simple prompts can make a big difference:
Ask your child the question:
“Beth ydy dy hobiau di?”
(They will know what it means.)
Encourage them to ask you back:
“Beth ydy dy hobiau di, Mam/Tad?”
Try a short conversation:
Child: “Beth ydy dy hobiau di?”
You: “Dw i’n hoffi… football/reading/cooking.”
You: “A ti?” (And you?)
When doing an activity together, you can say:
“Dyma un o’n hobïau ni!”
This is one of our hobbies!
These small moments help build confidence and show children that Welsh can be used naturally in everyday life.

We are very pleased to announce that our Chartwells Kitchen has received a food hygiene rating of 5 following a visit from the food standard's agency.
Managing Medication in School
In line with our Managing Medicines Policy, the school cannot give pupils any non–life‑saving medication. These medicines must be given by parents or carers at home, alternatively you can contact the school office to arrange a time to come in and give the medication yourself.
For safeguarding reasons, no medication should be put in a pupil’s bag or lunchbox.
Any prescribed long term life-saving medication must be handed straight to the school office by an adult, along with the consent and medical information forms and signed off by the Headteacher.
We ask all parents who have children with asthma to make sure their child has an in date inhaler in school.
Thank you for helping us keep all pupils safe.
Breakfast Club
To ensure the safety and wellbeing of all pupils, we kindly remind parents and guardians that Breakfast Club admission runs strictly between 8:20 and 8:30am. For safeguarding reasons, children arriving after 8:30am will not be admitted. It is essential that pupils don't access the school site until 8.15am as nobody is available to supervise children on the yard at this time.
It is essential that every child is personally handed over to a member of the Breakfast Club team at the main doors. Please do not leave the premises until this handover has been completed. These procedures are in place to protect all children. If you miss the deadline for entry you will need to wait with your child and ensure they enter school through their allocated class entrance. Thank you for your cooperation and continued support.
Timber Trail Installation
Safety Reminder: To keep everyone safe, we kindly ask that pupils do not use the Timber Trail before or after school. The equipment must only be used under staff supervision during the school day. Thank you for helping us keep playtime safe and fun for all!
Important Reminder regarding 'No Nuts in School'
We kindly remind all parents and carers that our school is a nut-free zone. This means that nuts and nut-based products must not be brought in snacks or packed lunches. Several of our students have severe nut allergies, and even trace amounts can trigger life-threatening reactions. These allergies are not just uncomfortable, they can be extremely dangerous, requiring immediate medical attention. By keeping nuts out of school, we’re helping to create a safe and inclusive environment for every child. Thank you for your continued support and vigilance in protecting our students’ health.
School Attendance
Remember not to take holidays in term time. Poor attendance can significantly impact on the well-being and academic attainment of your child. Our attendance target is 96.% for the whole school. Please see chart which demonstrates the effects of good and poor attendance. Our current whole school attendance is 95.8%. If your child is unwell please contact the school office.
The School Essentials Grant
The school essentials grant, funded by the Welsh Government funds free school meals and equipment for children with families on low incomes. All primary school pupils in Newport receive free school meals through the Universal Free School meals.
If your child is in primary school and receiving universal free school meals and you have a low household income (click on the link to see if you are eligible https://www.newport.gov.uk/schools-and-learning/school-meals/free-school-meals ), you should still complete an application form for free school meals.
You may be entitled to further support and your school may also receive additional funding. To receive the school essentials grant support, you have to apply. https://www.newport.gov.uk/schools-and-learning/educational-grants
The grant can help fund:
school uniform (including coats and shoes)
school sports kit
uniform for activities such as, scouts; guides; cadets; sports; performing arts
school equipment (school bags and stationery)
laptops or tablets
