Wildlife Garden Project
You may have noticed that we have had more deliveries arrive near the entrance to the school by the raised beds. These are part of a new grant scheme that we are proud to have been awarded that will help growing and wildlife flourish at MPPS! It will create a wildlife-rich garden for birds, mammals, and pollinators. It is provided by Keep Wales Tidy, the eco team we work with for Eco Schools. They will be providing and installing everything, with MPPS working alongside them.
They have begun work on the raised beds this week. We are excited to be creating a raised bed allotment area so that everyone in the school can be involved with growing. Year 5MM were lucky enough to help the raised beds to be filled this week. What a fun way to kick off Outdoor Learning for the new school year!!
Keep looking for many new Outdoor Learning projects we have developing over the coming months! It is very exciting.
Class Dojo important information
We use Class Dojo in order to communicate learning taking place in class, with parents. Although this features a messaging facility, this is not monitored by staff, so please use the normal channels of communication to speak with staff e.g. email or telephone the school office (Mountpleasant.primary@newportschools.wales or TEL: 01633 839912).
Class Dojo does however enable us to share some of the wonderful learning your child experiences with us and with you at home. We see this as your ‘window’ into the classroom, giving an opportunity to see what exciting things are taking place in class. Thank you

Riley's Story
In March 2025, Ella-Rose's brother, Riley, was blue-lighted to King's College hospital with multi-organ failure.
He spent 7 days on life support while waiting for a liver transplant and months in ICU as he slowly recovered. But for the care received by the staff at King's College hospital, Riley wouldn't be with us today.
All this was caused by an accidental overdose of paracetamol.
Thankfully, Riley made a full recovery and miraculously, didn't require a transplant. But the dangers of misuse of over-the-counter drugs still remain.

The team at King's told us that paracetamol was the number 1 cause of acute liver failure within their ICU.
On Saturday 12th September 2026, Ella Rose and her family and friends will be completing a 50k Gower Peninsula Hike to raise money for King's.
In completing the gruelling 50k challenge, we ultimately want to give back to the hospital that saved our son, but also help raise awareness of the dangers over-the-counter drugs can cause when used incorrectly.
Riley's story has been shared in the Pharmaceutical Journal in an attempt to start making advice clearer on packaging, and change attitudes towards "safe" drugs.
We really do appreciate the support from the school community and I'm sure Ella-Rose will be over the moon.

Important Reminder regarding 'No Nuts in School'
We kindly remind all parents and carers that our school is a nut-free zone. This means that nuts and nut-based products must not be brought in snacks or packed lunches. Several of our students have severe nut allergies, and even trace amounts can trigger life-threatening reactions. These allergies are not just uncomfortable, they can be extremely dangerous, requiring immediate medical attention. By keeping nuts out of school, we’re helping to create a safe and inclusive environment for every child. Thank you for your continued support and vigilance in protecting our students’ health.
School Times and Dates: September 2026
The school doors will open at 8.50 am to facilitate pupils being in their classes and ready for lessons to commence promptly at 9.00 am. Breakfast Club doors open at 8.20am for pupils who require a breakfast before school starts. The doors close at 8.30am. If you arrive after this time you will need to wait with your child prior to classroom doors opening at 8.50am for safeguarding reasons.

Seren a Sbarc Adventures Are Back!
Seren a Sbarc Adventures Are Back!
The Criw Cymraeg team are delighted to kick off another year of Seren a Sbarc adventures!
Each week, one child from every class will have the opportunity to take Seren or Sbarc home, along with their adventure diary. We would love families to add photographs of the exciting things they get up to together. There is no writing required; photos alone are perfect!
When the diary is returned, the class teacher and pupils will use the photographs as a stimulus for Welsh conversation. Children will be asked simple questions using Welsh patterns they learn and practise every day, such as "Ble mae Sbarc?" (Where is Sbarc?) or "Beth mae Seren yn bwyta?" (What is Seren eating?). The child who took the mascot home can then answer these questions in Welsh.
This initiative provides a wonderful opportunity for children to use their Welsh in a meaningful and natural way, talking about real-life experiences and activities from home.
The diaries and mascots will be sent home on a Friday and should be returned by the following Wednesday. This allows time for the class discussions before Seren or Sbarc sets off on their next adventure with another child.
Last year, the diaries were filled with fantastic photographs and memories, and we are excited to see where our mascots travel this year!

Managing Medication in School
In line with our Managing Medicines Policy, the school cannot give pupils any non–life‑saving medication. These medicines must be given by parents or carers at home, alternatively you can contact the school office to arrange a time to come in and give the medication yourself.
For safeguarding reasons, no medication should be put in a pupil’s bag or lunchbox.
Any prescribed long term life-saving medication must be handed straight to the school office by an adult, along with the consent and medical information forms and signed off by the Headteacher.
We ask all parents who have children with asthma to make sure their child has an in date inhaler in school.
Thank you for helping us keep all pupils safe.
School Attendance
Remember not to take holidays in term time. Poor attendance can significantly impact on the well-being and academic attainment of your child. Our attendance target is 96% for the whole school. Please see chart which demonstrates the effects of good and poor attendance. Our current whole school attendance is 99.15%. If your child is unwell please contact the school office.
TESCO Stronger Starts
We are delighted to let you know that our Tesco Stronger start bid came First and has been chosen by Tesco Customers to receive a grant award of £1,500.00! This grant is specifically for the purpose of developing sensory spaces. Thank you to our school community for supporting this initiative, we are all very excited that we have won!

The PTA is part of the Easy Fundraising scheme where online retailers donate a percentage of your purchase to us.

The School Essentials Grant
The school essentials grant, funded by the Welsh Government funds free school meals and equipment for children with families on low incomes. All primary school pupils in Newport receive free school meals through the Universal Free School meals.
If your child is in primary school and receiving universal free school meals and you have a low household income (click on the link to see if you are eligible https://www.newport.gov.uk/schools-and-learning/school-meals/free-school-meals ), you should still complete an application form for free school meals.
You may be entitled to further support and your school may also receive additional funding. To receive the school essentials grant support, you have to apply. https://www.newport.gov.uk/schools-and-learning/educational-grants
The grant can help fund:
school uniform (including coats and shoes)
school sports kit
uniform for activities such as, scouts; guides; cadets; sports; performing arts
school equipment (school bags and stationery)
laptops or tablets
equipment for out of school trips such as outdoor learning (waterproofs)
