Message from the Interim Headteacher
Dear Parents/Carers,
Welcome back! It has been wonderful to welcome all of our children back to school following the summer break. They have returned looking incredibly smart in their uniforms and have made a fantastic start to the new academic year, demonstrating our school values and following our school rules so well.
As you will see throughout this newsletter, the children have already enjoyed a range of exciting learning opportunities and have fully immersed themselves in their learning, truly hitting the ground running! We are incredibly proud of their enthusiasm and positive attitudes.
We are very excited about the autumn term ahead and the many opportunities it will bring. We look forward to working in partnership with you throughout the year to ensure all of our Lliswerry children achieve amazing things.
A little reminder that we as a school are here to help in any way. If you have any worries or concerns, please don't hesitate to speak with a member of staff.

Post Inspection Action Plan Update
With it being the start of the new academic year, we felt it would be important to remind parents and carers of the priorities we are currently working on as a school following the Estyn inspection that took place in June 2025.
We are continuing to focus on the three recommendations identified through the inspection:
Ensure that leaders identify and prioritise areas for development effectively and secure the necessary improvements
Improve the quality of teaching to ensure that pupils consistently make effective progress across the curriculum
Ensure that pupils make strong progress in mathematics and numeracy with a particular focus on the understanding of key concepts
Recommendation 1 - Update
We are encouraged by the progress made so far with Recommendation 1 and we remain committed to ensuring that our leadership systems are strong, effective and focused on achieving the very best outcomes for all pupils.
This year, we are continuing to make progress by reviewing our staffing structure to ensure there are clear roles and responsibilities across the school and that leadership capacity is strengthened where needed. Working closely with our Governing Body, which continues to provide both support and challenge through regular full governing body and committee meetings. Implementing a robust programme of monitoring, evaluation and review and undertaking self -evaluation activities such as lesson observations, learning walk, book looks, discussions with learners about their learning experiences and celebrating what is working well. We contonue to invest in professional learning for staff, with regular training opportunities linked to individual roles and whole-school priorities. Staff engage in weekly professional learning sessions every Wednesday after school which focus on our Post-Inspection Action Plan recommendations. Working collaboratively with external partners, including the Local Authority and School Improvement Service, to quality assure our work and support our ongoing improvement journey.
Recommendation 2 - Update
We are pleased with the progress made within Recommendation 2 and this continues to be our priority here at Lliswerry, working to ensure teacher expectations are high and they are developing into being independent, ambitious learners.
During our September INSET days the focus was on curriculum expectations with all staff and our newly developed Teaching and Learning Strategy was shared which brings together lots of hard work and progress with our curriculum that we have seen over recent months.
Parents will have seen our very first Curriculum Newsletters shared on Seesaw, which aim to give you an insight into the learning experiences and opportunities that your children can look forward to over the coming weeks at Lliswerry. In addition, we have also launched 'Homework Menus' alongside our new topics this term which allow parents and carers to play an active part in their child's learning journey which is so important.
This term we are continuing to develop our children's love of reading both inside and outside of school which will also be a fucus for us this term.
Recommendation 3 - Update
The development of Maths across the school has been one we are proud of at Lliswerry over the past few terms.
Alongside our clear non-negotiables within the teaching of Maths in daily lessons, we are focussing on ensuring the teaching and learning is progressive, suitable for all learners and builds in sequence across all years groups as the children make progress at their individual age and stage of development.
TAPAS professional learning has been undertaken by all staff and they are building this into their lessons each day, including the use of concrete and visual representations when working with number in both Maths and experiences across the curriculum.
As they were in the Spring term last academic year, our Autumn term PACT (Parent and Child Together) sessions will also have a Maths and Numeracy focus for parents to explore concepts alongside their child.
Head and Deputy Girls and Boys Appointments
We are so delighted with the number of pupils who have applied for the roles of Head and Deputy Girls and Boys. To hear them present their manifestos has been a real privilege. Their committment to the school is inspiring.
It is going to be a very tough decision making process to appointment just four of our amazing pupils. Everyone of them should be incredibly proud of themselves - we certainly are!

Celebrating Sucess at Lliswerry Primary School
At Lliswerry Primary, we love celebrating success! We have lots of different ways to recognise and reward our pupils for their hard work, positive behaviour and all types of achievements.
Alongside our weekly Hot Chocolate winners, who are selected for demonstrating that they consistently follow our school rules, we also celebrate success through our weekly 'Seren Y Wythnos' certificates. Pupils are selected take part in our Presentation Parade, where they have the opportunity to showcase their wonderful learning to the rest of the school.
By far the children's favourite way to celebrate success has to be our school praises! Whether it’s an “Ooh Ah, Superstar!”, a 'Ketchup Clap' or even a 'Firework', we make sure our pupils know just how proud we are of their learning, effort and behaviour.
If you’re wondering which praise is the most popular, it has to be the Marshmallow Clap!

Following today's Celebration Assembly, which is always one of the highlights of our school week, we invited a group of our Lliswerry role models to share hot chocolate and a sweet treat with Mrs Isaac. These children have all had a fantastic week and we are so proud of them! Keep shining bright and being the superstars you are!

We are continually working on our attendnace at school. Remember not to take holidays in term time. Poor attendance can significantly impact on the well-being and academic attainment of your child.
Please see the attached chart which demonstrates the effects of good and poor attendance. Our current whole school attendance is 90% which is below the expected. It is so important we must keep working together to achieve our target.

FPN Information
Regular attendance at school is required by law. The Welsh Government has reintroduced the use of Fixed Penalty Notices for non-school attendance. Schools in Newport, including Lliswerry Primary, have resumed issuing Fixed Penalty Notices for unauthorised absences from school, including holidays. From September 2023, Fixed Penalty Notices can be issued if a child has 10 sessions/5 days of unauthorised absence. The fine is issued by Newport City Council and is currently set at £60 if paid in the first 28 days. Non-payment within this time means the fine increases to £120. Non-payment of the fine may result in prosecution. Please click the link to view more information about Fixed Penalty Notices.
Where there are genuine reasons for absences, it is important that you inform the school on the first day of absence so the registers can be coded accordingly. If no reason is provided, then the absence will be recorded as unauthorised.
You can report your child’s absence via telephone, 01633 832824, or via the School Gateway App.
If you plan to take your child on holiday during term time, you must complete an absence request form so that the correct code can be entered into the register for your child. The Headteacher will consider your request. Holidays during term time are classed as an unauthorised absence.
Nursery - Me, You and Us
Our Nursery children have settled in so well. We have had a lovely week making friends, learning routines and exploring the school grounds. We found a pear! Watch this space to see what we did next..
Class HJ LRB- Wonders of Autumn
In Class HJ we have started our topic "Wonders of Autumn" our sparkly starter focus on our sensory exploration of forest school. We looked at the changing leaves and trees, and collected items of autumn on our travels. We then used those items we found to create our topic page using our fine motor skills to create our incredible displays.
The children were very excited to be back at forest school further exploring our changing season!

Reception - Autumn Leaves and Family Trees
Reception have settled in really well to their new classes and new routines. We are so very proud of them! We kick started our topic 'Autumn leaves and Family Trees' with the children dressing up in their favourite outfits and costumes. They were excited to share their 'All about me' bags filled with special belongings and photographs to help them talk about themselves and their families.
We are looking forward to continuing their learning journey with them this term.
Year 1 - Welcome to Our World
Year 1 - Welcome to Our World
Year 1 have made a fantastic start to the year and are really excited to learn all about their new topic, 'Welcome to Our World'! We will be learning all about our local community.
As part of our learning, we are very excited to be visiting Little Oaks to explore and learn more about our local area. The children have lots of questions about the local area which they are looking forward to answering during our trip. We have also been designing our topic covers using our creative skills to colour and draw our own pictures. We are very excited to continue exploring into our new topic.
We are looking forward to a wonderful autumn term with the children in Year 1!
Year 2 - On our Doorstep - Then and Now
Year 2 - On our Doorstep - Then and Now
Year 2 have had a brilliant start to their new Topic and have been very enthusiastic, asking lots of questions about life in the past and how items like washing machines work. We can't wait to find the answers! On Monday the children took part in their 'Sparkly Starter' and enjoyed creating their houses and the street that they live on using chalk. We then looked at different landmarks in Newport and created these using blocks and used our reading skills to find the names and match them to the correct picture. We are very excited to find out more about what life was like in the past and the different homes that we live in!

Year 3 have started their new topic, 'Stronger Together'.
Our Sparkly Starter focused on the idea of community and communities around our school. The children then started to explore communities and why they settle in specific areas.
Our topic will focus on the Romans and Celts. All the children loved dressing up as a Roman with a Toilet paper toga!
We are looking forward to exploring this further this term!
Year 4 - My Wales, My Home
Year 4 - My Wales, My Home
Year 4 have started their new topic, 'My Wales, My Home'. Our Sparkly Starter focused on what home feels like to us, and we used our senses to create a poem. We also thought about what items we would pack in our suitcase if we were leaving our home and why.
'My Wales, My Home' will invite Year 4 children to explore what it means to live in Wales and how the people, cultures and communities that make up our country have changed over time. We are so excited! Keep a look out for our wonderful learning journey!
Year 5 - Swimming Lessons
Year 5 - Swimming Lessons
Year 5 have started the new school year with a SPLASH! We have been attending swimming lessons at the International Sports Village every day since the very first day of school. Our Year 5 pupils have shown so much resilience over this time and have really made everyone proud of the excellent progress they are all already making.
We are so excited to see the continued progress over the next week of lessons!

Year 6 - War and Peace
Year 6 have started their new topic, 'War and Peace'.
For our Sparkly Starter we looked at images from World War II. The children discussed what they could see and asked questions about what they wanted to find out. Learners will examine the causes of World War II, the experiences of people during the war, and the atrocities of the Holocaust and concentration camps. They will compare these historical events with modern conflicts, considering how international organisations, diplomacy, and cooperation can help resolve disputes and promote peace.

Calling all Dads!!
There is a new dad's group starting on Saturday 26th September. Its a chance to meet, connect and talk about Dad stuff with a free breakfast roll included.
Prosiect Pengwin
Our The Speech and language team are looking for families to participate in helping to test screening tools for use by health visitors.
Participating families will receive a £20 shopping voucher for each research visit as a thank you for their time. Further information and poster attached!
Community Project- The Magic Cottage
Community Project- The Magic Cottage
Miss Collins was successful in Class LC's application to The Magic Cottage, Waste Not Want Not Charity, for a Sensory Suitcase donation, funded through the National Lottery Community Fund. This will provide invaluable resources to implement interventions to support those pupils requiring bespoke ALN interventions, such as 'Bucket Time' and Intensive Interaction. There are also many ways as parents you can access their support by following their social media pages. Look out for similar projects closer to home too. We have already had helpful discussions with charities such as Barnardo's. More information will follow as we receive this.
