Message from the Interim Headteacher
WOW! What another busy few weeks it has been. The children have been fully immersed in their learning and have been achieving great things. Tuesday's INSET day was a very productive day for staff with lots of learning taking place! Staff had professional learning linked to Science, Reading and Foundation Phase pedagogy.
As you will know, Maths is currently a key focus for us as a school. It has been a pleasure listening to learners this week about their Maths learning. The children were very enthusiastic to talk about their Maths lessons and were proud to show the work in their books.
There are two weeks left until we break up for May half term. Over the next few weeks, we will continue working hard to ensure the children strive to achieve their best.
Wishing our fabulous Lliswerry familes, a lovely weekend.
Mrs Pegington
Head and Deputy Girls and Boys
We are proud to share some of the exciting learning that has been taking place across our school this week. One of our highlights has been the planning of our very own school café, where we have been working together to develop ideas, think about customer service and learn about running a business. As part of this, we were lucky to welcome Will from Rogue Fox in Newport, who spoke to us about his experience in the food industry and what it takes to create a successful café. We asked questions, discussed menu ideas and even started thinking about branding and teamwork. It has been inspiring to take part in learning experiences like this, helping us build confidence, creativity and important life skills. We are really looking forward to sharing more as our café plans continue to develop!

Safeguarding - Attendance
Attendance continues to be one of our key priorities at Lliswerry. We are working hard with our families to make sure that children are in school and learning. Whilst we do not expect children to attend school when they are poorly, it is vital that all children at our school attend for at least 95% of the time. We are monitoring attendance closely along with those who are persistently late. Classroom doors open at 8.40am each morning and are open until 8.50am to allow a calm start to the day. Please ensure that you arrive on time to drop off and collect.
We are seeing an increase in the number of mobile phones being brought into school by our Year 5 and 6 children. Please could we remind parents that we do not encourage children to bring their mobile phones into school as they are not permitted to be used on school site in line with expectations across Newport Schools. If there are circumstances where they are brought into school, they will need to be switched off and handed to your child's class teacher to fulfil our Safeguarding policies. Unfortunately, the school can take no responsibility for the mobile phones whilst they are on site.
We kindly remind parents and carers that while sensory items such as fidget tools and squishy toys can play an important role in supporting some children’s focus, regulation and wellbeing, they are not required for every child. In school, we carefully consider individual needs and will ensure that pupils who benefit from these resources have appropriate access to them as part of their learning provision. To maintain a calm and purposeful learning environment for all, we ask that children do not bring in fidget or sensory toys unless this has been agreed with a member of staff. Thank you for your understanding and support in helping us meet all pupils’ needs effectively.
Year 6 were delighted to welcome Will from The Rogue Fox café this week. He shared his journey to owning a successful café and provided the pupils with advice and tips for their upcoming pop-up café. He spoke about menu choices, customer service, cost and profit, taking managed risks and always working hard. The children asked purposeful questions and displayed such respect and enthusiasm.
Thank you, Will. You certainly gave us food for thought!
We have absolutely loved seeing how our Year 4 topic of 'Save the Bees, Save the Planet', has inspired such enthusiasm both in school and at home. It has been wonderful to hear of our families visiting garden centres, planting colourful, wildflowers, building bee hotels and spotting bees in their local community. We are especially proud of how learners have shared their learning with their families, helping others understand just how important it is to look after these amazing pollinators. Thank you for your continued support - your involvement has made our topic even more memorable and authentic for the children.
... and to celebrate and introduce the new Language of the Month to Lliswerry Primary School pupils, children whose families speak Kurdish Sorani and Kurdish Kurmanji presented their language to the school, through a presentation, Kurdish music and dancing. Some of the children proudly wore their traditional clothes.
Year 2 were very excited to welcome Nurse Alex into school and ask her questions about her role as a nurse at the hospital in our community. She told us how she helps people to get better by giving them medicine and about the different colour uniforms. Lots of us were inspired to become a nurse when we are older and Nurse Alex explained how she became a nurse and what we would need to do too! A big thank you to Nurse Alex!!
Nursery
This week Nursery have made the most of the beautiful weather and our beautiful Forest School. We have been using our senses to explore and notice everything around us. We now know the name of dandelion and daisies.
A Dandelion
Dandelion fluff floats on a breeze,
Tickles my nose and makes me sneeze.
Over the last few weeks Nursery has watched their learning environment have a make over. We have had new flooring and it has been given a fresh coat of paint. Watch this space for more photos of our newly developed areas....
1MA performed a fantastic, enthusiastic showcase to their families on Thursday!
They were able to showcase all of the fabulous work they had completed since starting Year 1 and all of the interesting ideas they had put forward as suggestions to learn about in the Summer term. Miss Managhan was so proud of them all - it's not easy to stand at the front and deliver lines and songs but they smashed it!
A huge thank you to all who attended - it was lovely to see families engage in the activities after the showcase and we hope it gave you a small insight as to what happens inside the classroom!
We would like to welcome Miss Drew and Miss Keen who are newly appointed as our Level 3 Cover Supervisors. You will see them a lot around the school as they cover in all classes from Nursery to Year 6.
These are our children who have been making us proud this week! On a weekly basis, one child from every class is chosen to have hot chocolate and biscuits with Mrs Pegington and Mrs Isaac. The children chosen are those who have gone 'above and beyond' in all that they do. Congratulations and thank you to these children for being positive role models at Lliswerry. Keep up the great things you are doing!
