A very warm welcome to the History department!
What better place to study History than at Ysgol y Moelwyn in the special community of Blaenau Ffestiniog? The school is located within an area of outstanding historical heritage, stretching from Dolwyddelan castle and the conflict of Llywelyn the Great in the east, Dinas Emrys and the mythical battle of the two dragons in Dyffryn Gwynant in the north, the prehistoric romance of the Mabinogi in the Maentwrog area, and the history of the Romans encapsulated in the bare ruins of Tomen y Mur, a stone`s throw from the home of Morgan Llwyd, the author of the school logo, ‘amser dyn yw ei gynysgaeth’.
While these special strands of history are scattered around the catchment area, the school itself is located in the midst of the world famous slate heritage of Blaenau Ffestiniog, with its hard hitting history encompassing economic growth and depression, social changes, conflicts and strikes and brilliant engineering innovation.
Within the humanities faculty all KS3 pupils will be studying history and an opportunity to study aspects of history from the Middle Ages until today. History of Wales is included with the programme of study which is used to help pupils develop their skills at investigation, interpretation and communicating information. This course provides pupils with an opportunity to understand the viewpoint of different people from different backgrounds and cultures.
The department is proud of the unusually high number of learners who decide to follow the GCSE history course, which provides an exciting and interesting opportunity to develop a wide range of skills in the process of studying aspects of the history of Wales, Britain, Europe and America. It is an opportunity to understand why historical events have taken their course and what lessons we can learn from the errors and successes of the past.
In partnership with other humanities departments, the department has an honourable tradition of arranging regular educational visits, ranging from very local visits within the catchment area, to such locations as the slave museum in Liverpool and also international visits including Rome, Auschwitz, New York and Washington.
A qualification in History can eventually lead to such careers as journalism, careers in the field of the law, education politics and government.
A warm welcome to the History department!
