The GCSE English Language and Literature Double Award enables you to appreciate how language connects you to the world around you, to engage with a rich range of texts from different periods and by diverse writers, and to develop and apply your own use of language, through written and verbal communication.

The Mathematics and Numeracy (Double Award) is worth two GCSEs and is compulsory for all learners. It allows learners to develop the analytical and problem-solving skills which are necessary in other curriculum subjects, real world applications and career opportunities.
The new GCSE will have a unitised structure, meaning that there will be opportunities to take some exams before the end of Year 11.
There will be three units which can be sat at either higher tier level (A* to D) or foundation tier level (C to G). Learners will be able to be entered for different units at different tiers depending on their strengths and which set they are in. The double award grade will then be based on a uniformed mark scale.
The units are as follows:
Unit 1 Financial Mathematics and other aspects of Numeracy (Calculator allowed) 30%
Unit 2 Non calculator aspects of Mathematics 30%
Unit 3 Calculator aspects of Mathematics 40%.
The setting structure is very similar to Year 9. The learner will be placed in the set most suitable for them and will be based on KS3 performance and potential. The learner will work within their capability and be challenged to achieve the best possible grade

Why should I study this subject?
Science is compulsory for all pupils in Years 10 and 11. The course is designed so that you develop an appreciation of the world around you and also the work that scientists do. In Biology, Chemistry and Physics you will study the ways in which science affects you as an individual and also how it affects society as a whole. You will have the opportunity to make scientific measurements during investigations and as a result you will develop your ability to evaluate scientific information. You will also develop your language and mathematical skills.
What is the content of the course?
In Year 10 the pupils who follow Science study a module in each of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. The first Biology module looks at cells, respiratory and digestion systems and ecosystems. Atomic structure and the periodic table, the ever-changing earth and rates of reactions are studied in Chemistry and you will be studying electrical circuits, energy and waves in Physics. Together with a further four modules in Year 11 the course will give you a Double Award GCSE in Science. Pupils studying the separate sciences will complete units with extended areas of study to gain three separate GCSEs in Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
If selected to follow Applied Science (Single Award) you will complete one unit in Year 10 called 'Science in the modern world' and together with a further three units in Year 11 the course will give you a Single Award GCSE in Applied Science.
GCSE Applied Science provides a context led framework for developing learners’ knowledge, understanding and skills.
Will I be taught in a particular set?
There will be sets in Year 10. The set you are placed in will depend on the pathway most suitable for you. There are three pathways available which are:-
GCSE Separate Sciences (GCSE Biology, GCSE Chemistry & GCSE Physics)
GCSE Science (Double Award)
GCSE Applied Science (Single Award)
