At Cwm Primary School, our Learning and Teaching vision has been shaped collaboratively by our staff and learners. Rooted in our shared values and underpinned by Curriculum for Wales it reflects our commitment to building confident, ambitious and independent learners. Our approach is built on four key principles: Independence, Assessment for Learning, High Expectations and Clarity with securing high levels of Wellbeing for all as a foundation builder to achieve this.
These guiding principles shape our learning and teaching, empowering every member of our school community to
'Reach for the Stars.'
In Wales, Relationships and Sexuality Education (RSE) is now a compulsory part of the school curriculum. Its purpose is simple: to help children understand themselves, build healthy relationships and stay safe as they grow.
At our school, we use Jigsaw—a well‑established, child‑centred PSHE programme—to support our RSE lessons. Jigsaw provides clear, age‑appropriate materials that help children explore topics in a safe, thoughtful and sensitive way.
What does RSE teach?
RSE helps children to:
Look after their health and emotional well‑being
Build positive, safe relationships with family and friends
Understand how relationships and identity develop as they get older
Respect their own rights and the rights of others
The focus is always on age‑appropriate learning that supports children as they grow and develop.
High‑quality RSE helps children:
Recognise what healthy and safe relationships look like
Know when something isn’t right and how to get help
Understand equality, respect and kindness
Challenge bullying, including homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying
Make informed, confident choices as they move towards adulthood
RSE is a key part of keeping children safe and promoting well‑being.
