Learning
Hello from Mrs Mackie
Deputy Headteacher
Hello Year 6! My name is Mrs. Mackie and I am the Deputy Headteacher here at Brynteg School. I’ve been here at Brynteg for just over five years so I know exactly how you are feeling right now – I bet you’re feeling both nervous and excited right? Well, I’m sure you’re going to love Brynteg as much as I do and I am so, so excited to meet you.
Part of my role here at Brynteg is to develop teaching and learning so that all of our pupils have the best learning experiences possible, and I’m sure when you join us in September you will see for yourself the exciting and engaging lessons available to you.
So, what will your learning look like? Well, learning is divided into 6 areas or clusters as we call them at Brynteg; 1. Expressive Arts, 2. Health and Wellbeing, 3. Languages, Literacy and Communication, 4. Humanities, 5. Maths and Computer Science and 6. Science and Technology. The 6 cluster areas are led by our wonderful Cluster Leaders (see pictures below), who have worked incredibly hard this year to design a curriculum for you that will provide you with the opportunity to be creative and ambitious, while having lots and lots of fun! The Health and Wellbeing curriculum is completely new just for you this year - check out the video below which outlines your learning for this area.
What subjects will you study within each cluster? You will study a variety of subjects, for example in Expressive Arts you will study Art, Drama, Music and Textiles, and in Humanities you will study History, Geography and Religious Studies. You will learn to use skills you have developed in one cluster area in another, and there will be plenty of opportunities for you to showcase your work to your parents, carers and the rest of the school.
Just to give you a tiny taster of what to expect in your learning, here are just some of the exciting things you will be doing throughout your first year:
Pen portraits, raps and drama sketches about yourself.
Designing and producing a new school meal to be served in the canteen.
Visiting the Big Pit Mining Museum as part of a study into mining and child labour.
Studying forensics in Science, focusing particularly on finger prints and facial recognition.
Designing an iPad or iPhone docking station for your bedroom in DT.
Studying Africa, focusing particularly on 'The Lion King' and designing costumes, masks and artwork to be used in a show.
Studying hospitality; preparing, cooking and serving food for a school event.
Participating in a variety of sports and learning about sport in countries around the world.
How exciting! I can't wait to see you taking part in all of these amazing activities when you join us at Brynteg, but in the meantime, if you have any questions you're welcome to email me on: mackiel12@hwbcymru.net (please ask at home for permission before you do) and I will reply to you as soon as possible.
Take care and see you very soon!
