Illness Policies
Illness Policies
At Stony Brook we try to keep contagious illness to a minimum to help all of our students stay healthy, and to protect our most high-risk students from serious health problems.
Your child should stay home when:
they have a fever of 100.0 F or greater or have had a fever within the past 24 hours.
they have been vomiting and/or had diarrhea in the past 24 hours,
they have an infectious skin condition - for open or draining lesions, exposed areas must remain covered while at school.
they have been diagnosed with Strep throat or conjunctivitis (pink eye) and have been on antibiotics for less than 12 hours
they have a continuous cough and/or runny nose and if the cough interferes with their ability or the ability of others to concentrate on school work, or the student cannot manage the runny nose.
When can my child return to school after an illness?
Students should be fever free for 24 hours (less than 100.0 F) WITHOUT using acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Motrin)
Students should be 24 hours without vomiting/diarrhea to return to school
Strep throat: Students may return to school when they are fever free for 24 hours and at least 12 hours after antibiotic therapy has begun and student is able to participate in activities
In following with CDC recommendations the following applies to students diagnosed with COVID:
Students should remain home until 1) they are fever free for 24 hours without medication AND 2) their symptoms are improving.
When the above requirements are satisfied it is strongly recommended that the student wear a mask for 5 days after their return to school.
