Health Screenings

The following comprehensive school health services are provided to students:

• Pre-K: Height, Weight, Blood Pressure, Vision, Hearing 

• Kindergarten: Height, Weight, Blood Pressure, Vision, Hearing

• First grade: Height, Weight, Blood Pressure, Vision, Hearing

• Second Grade: Height, Weight, Blood Pressure, Vision, Hearing and Color Perception

• Third Grade: Height, Weight, Blood Pressure, Hearing

• Fourth Grade: Height, Weight, Blood Pressure, Vision

• Fifth Grade: Height, Weight, Blood Pressure, Scoliosis

Vision Screening

The vision screening program (N.J.S.A. 18A:40-1) is performed to screen for visual acuity and color perception. Vision screenings will be done during the Pre-K, 1st, 2nd, and 4th grade screening; then as needed. Students identified as needing follow-up will be referred to their private medical doctor.

Hearing Screening 

Hearing screenings will be done during the Pre-K, 1st, 2nd, 3rd grade screening. Hearing screenings are also provided as needed at any time.

Health Appraisals

Health appraisals are conducted to assess normal growth and development. Significant changes in growth and development patterns will be discussed with the student and/or parent. Blood pressure screening is conducted to identify students at risk for hypertension. Health counseling regarding nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle will be provided. Appropriate referrals to private physicians will be made when necessary.

Scoliosis Screenings

Scoliosis is the lateral curvature of the spine most commonly detected during the adolescent growth period.  This will be done during the 5th grade physical. Parents have the right to refuse this examination and can call us in the office for information.

Medications

Students who need to self-administer emergency medications during school hours, such as Epipens or Inhalers, must have their physician complete the appropriate medical forms for the district. Please see our forms page for the forms you may need regarding allergies and asthma.

Prescriptions and Over the Counter Medications

If your child needs any prescription medication administered at school during school hours, please download the Request for the Administration of Medications in School.  Medications need to be in their original containers, clearly marked with the students name/prescription label.  Medications must be delivered to the health office by a parent with accompanying paperwork.  Students can not carry medication independently while at school.
